Title: I want to get into hard liquor. help me
Post by: TakingBackSunday on September 29, 2010, 12:13:13 AM
I had a martini this past weekend and I loved it.  It was a vesper (I know, bond joke guffaw guffaw) and really liked the process of making it and everything–so I want to get into it more.

what are some of your guys' favorite cocktails/martinis/mixed drinks in general?  I'll be honest when i saw I haven't had many, but of the ones I've tried (old fashioned, vesper, godfathers, and my favorite white russians) I've enjoyed drinking them for the most part.  so list some favorites and tell me some necessity purchases in terms of liquor and mixers

Gin (Tanqueray) and tonic is really the only drink I enjoy that's not beer or wine.

Gin and Tonic, or gin and club soda. Toss in a lime if you need. Prefer Tanqueray.

Rum and Cranberry Juice. Parrot Bay goes good with this, but my personal rum lately is Sailor Jerry's.

Vodka and Cranberry Juice. Get good vodka. Or end up puking.

Whiskey on ice.

Brass Monkey: Vodka, rum and OJ.

Dr. Kervorkian: Dark rum and Dr Pepper.

Kamikaze
    *  1 oz. Triple Sec (Cointreau)
    * 1 oz. Vodka
    * 1 oz. Lime Juice
    * 1 wedge Lime

My wife is into skinny girl margaritas and they are pretty good too. Even better with Patron.

Gotta be bourbon on the rocks. As for cocktails, the obvious Long Island to get shmammed, and Negroni to sip on like a G and still end up lit.

    It is a curious fact, and one to which no one knows quite how much importance to attach, that something like 85% of all known worlds in the Galaxy, be they primitive or highly advanced, have invented a drink called jynnan tonnyx, or gee-N’N-T’N-ix, or jinond-o-nicks, or any one of a thousand or more variations on the same phonetic theme. The drinks themselves are not the same, and vary between the Sivolvian “chinanto/mnigs” which is ordinary water served at slightly above room temperature, and the Gagrakackan “tzjin-anthony-ks” which kills cows at a hundred paces; and in fact the one common factor between all of them, beyond the fact that the names sound the same, is that they were all invented and named before the worlds concerned made contact with any other worlds.

    What can be made of this fact? It exists in total isolation. As far as any theory of structural linguistics is concerned it is right off the graph, and yet it persists. Old structural linguists get very angry when young structural linguists go on about it. Young structural linguists get deeply excited about it and stay up late at night convinced that they are very close to something of profound importance, and end up becoming old structural linguists before their time, getting very angry with the young ones. Structural linguistics is a bitterly divided and unhappy discipline, and a large number of its practitioners spend too many nights drowning their problems in Ouisghian Zodahs.

jesus buncha cocktail amateurs up in here.  if you go out to any place that isn't a total hole-in-the-wall shit bar, they should have a drink menu if you ask for it.  you'll usually end up with something at least decent tasting and more interesting than a gin & tonic or :yuck rum & coke :yuck  Also just go to the liquor store and start trying stuff.  Most stuff in the $20 - $30 range should be pretty good, and you can look up mixers online or at any bookstore.  There's limitless variety out there - have fun!

If you drink to look like a man drink scotch
If you drink to look like a guy that wants to have fun drink bourbon or rum
If you drink to look like an alcoholic drink gin
If you drink to look rich drink cognac

When I'm out I drink one of the following 4 drinks:

1. Margaritas (as long as they're done right, of any kind/flavor honestly :drool)
2. Malibu & pineapple (100% vitamin c, no hangovers  8) )
3. Vanilla vodka & cranberry juice (at bars that have nasty pineapple juice and I fear their ability to make a decent margarita)
4. Wine of the semi-sweet white variety (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Himmelswein [I don't know a ton about wine, but I know enough to know what I like and what I absolutely do not like, and enough to recommend the basics to someone. I apologize to the wine snobs in here for my inferior wine preferences.])

But don't follow my lead; those are girl drinks. Drink straight turpentine or else you won't get laid.

Whisky, my favourite being Scotch, my favourite Scotch regions being Islay or Speyside, Talisker being one of my favourite distilleries. Taken neat (no ice, no mixer, just whisky). Haven't had enough money to broaden my tastes lately so I've been drinkin whatever is reasonably priced. Got a 10 year Lephroiag for 50$ the other week, it's a decent single malt Islay you'll find in nearly every bar (at least here, maybe not America).

That skull is Ed Hardy vodka, right?

Just bought my first bottle of whiskey ever. I don't know why either. I was on my way home from the grocery store and craved it. Weird though, me and whiskey never got along. Wish I knew more about it. I do know that the good stuff is more than I want to spend on something I'll rarely drink. So I took a stab in the dark and grabbed a bottle of Makers Mark.

Next purchase will be a nice sipping glass since I found out that I don't currently own one.

Yeah, you are right. I'm trying to remember where the confusion is from. I wouldn't put it past my local booze shop to put Ed Hardy on it to jack the price up though. I think it was like $60 or so.
