One thing that's bothered me lately is, very briefly, I was using iTunes on the iPod and enjoying direct download and library inclusion. Very slick! But with limited access to the prepaid cards for the US store, I switched to Amazon and eMusic for my online music purchasing... which means I am unable to purchase online songs via iPod as it only supports that feature through iTunes.

Yeah, essentially it just means I'm stuck doing what everyone has done since the origin of the mp3 player species: download on PC, sync to portable player. But with the advent of Android phones being willing to shlurp online files to their local storage, Apple's self- and RIAA-protectionist policies have come into sharper relief.

Oh, and the recent, nearly abortive launch of Ping is telling as well: it only tracks music purchased through the iTunes Music Store. Lame.

You can use Songbird to sync your iDevices. Just need to install a plugin. If you go back to iTunes though it'll want you resync with that. Songbird also integrates with various stores - 7Digital and lastfm, among others.

Songbird is what iTunes should be, really. Flac support is awesome too. I don't use it for my library (that's all on PC), but it would definitely be my first choice if I was Mac-exclusive.

Are you seriously considering installing MS software on your Mac? Apple products are designed to run EVEN SLOWER if you put MS stuff on them. The Steve has declared it an engineering mandate.

You're only saying that because Live Messenger on Windows is basically an OS-manufacturer sanctioned (well "created") Trojan Horse to get your eyeballs on whatever they want to host at MSN.com. If they tried to include that with your normal Mac user's install, no one would ever touch it.

...Then again, there are a lot of Mac users who buy it because it's "easier" than a Windows machine, and if they want to talk to their MSN friends, they'll assume they need the MSN software instead of any of the plethora of unified messaging options available on OS X.

Songbird has always run too slowly for me–and I realize that statement seems hypocritical as an iTunes user, but iTunes on my Macbook has never seemed slow for me.  So, meh.

Fair enough. Songbird is definitely more bloated than iTunes, but that's why I like it FEATURES :rock processing bloated software is a cinch for my i5.

I installed iTunes 10 and coming from iTunes 7 the new visualizer is easily the best visualizer ever.  Great way to procrastinate at work when I'm really tired without feeling too guilty.

One of my college professors was a huge apple fanboy and always talked about AppleTV and DA FUTURE and how Apple is going to change how we watch tv as we know it.

Just a monochrome iPod U2 edition. 6 years, and still going strong.

(I may get a new-gen iPod Touch once I get the $$$)

A Windows Phone 7.

Sweet.
I hear they are porting the Zune software to MacOS too. It might be a nice time to change.

Fuck it.

I'm sorry but I'm abandoning zune. Time to get an ipod touch. Apple you have won, if only for Microsoft's own incompetence.

ITT: Even Apple fanbois know to avoid AppleTV.

Update: I now own two of these damned things.

I quite like them, but as an appliance, it is crap. There are plenty of things solved by restarting the OS, but I don't ever seem to see my American friends' cable boxes, DVRs, net-enabled DVD players with YouTube and NetFlix running on them -- I never see them needing a reboot.

But the REAL reason I'm Thread Necromancing this back to life is this:
https://uxdesign.cc/a-critical-analysis-of-the-ios-10-lockscreen-experience-726ddfba3c1a#.wmrmi24ff

iOS 10's lock screen is just a trainwreck. This is a good analysis of why.

I agree with a lot of that article. However, I'm willing to overlook most of the flaws in favor of the 3D touch iMessage feature. A great improvement over the quick reply.

2011 15" MacBook Pro
iPhone 6s
Apple TV (old gen)

The stuff I get from work doesn't count probably:
2015 13" MacBook Pro Retina
iPhone 5s
iPad 4th gen (non-Air)

MacBook Air 11"
MacBook Pro 15"
iPhone 6
iPad Air

I really like iOS and I really dislike Mac OS. For computers, I prefer using Windows or Linux.

Let me re-evaluate my Apple products:

In use:

-Apple TV 3 (2015)- Gives me problems all the time with the remote not responding properly or apps not loading up and freezing, especially Hulu.  Frustrates me to the point that I am thinking I should just sell it and get a Roku.
-iPhone SE (2016)- My work phone.  Only gets used in on-call or emergency situations, so basically it just sits turned-off in my briefcase.

Not in use:

-MacBook (2008)- Currently missing a battery, HDD is wiped, and is sitting in a drawer.
-Apple TV 2 (2012?)- Sitting in the same drawer.
-Airport Express- Don't need it anymore.  I believe it's also in the same drawer.

Not mine:

-iPhone 6- My wife's current phone.  I wonder if I can get her to switch over to Android, like I did, next time.  :doge

iPad Air 2 - love it
Apple Watch - it's a smart watch, eh
iPhone 6 - really need to upgrade to the 7 but can't afford it right now
Newest Apple TV - love this thing
Early 2015 maxed out 15 inch MacBook Pro - this was my work computer that the company decided to give to me as part of my severance.  It's a beast.

2014 13" Macbook Air - Got it for like $250 when I worked for Apple (actually right before I left), still a great laptop. Just barely runs WoW, which is surprising.
Apple Keyboard - Used to use it for typing on PS3, now it sits in a drawer
iPad Mini - Got it for my lady last Christmas

Ah, I only have a 6, not 6S -- your magic 3D Touch feature eludes me until my next upgrade in 2~3 years.
