Someone please school me on wtf DOTA is. I look at some vid on youtube and don't know what in the fuck is going on. I've played the WC3 map but that's the extent of my knowledge.

It is a RTS/RPG/tower defense hybrid. The map has three lanes, each with three towers per lane that guard a shrine that is must be destroyed. Each side has 5 players and over 100 characters to choose from. You start each game at level 1 and have a small pool of gold. You level up and earn gold by killing waves of creeps that spawn into each lane and by killing NPCs. You are trying to get more powerful than your opponent so you can destroy the shrine before him.

If you want to get a feel for what it's like, just download the free-to-play League of Legends. It was done by some of the same people that made DOTA.

:wag Not exactly. Guinsoo and Pendragon worked on earlier versions of DotA, but Icefrog (who is working on DOTA2) is the guy who pretty much made the game into what it is today.
But yeah, League of Legends is a good primer to the genre, although it is a dumbed down version of DOTA. I'm honestly surprised Valve is keeping the game intact, convoluted bullshit and all.

What the fuck is DOTA? Seriously, I read through that GAF thread and the press release and they only ever refer to it as DOTA. I have no idea what DOTA stands for. :lol
-
Acronym for 'Defense of the Ancients'.

That's why I said SOME.

I didn't play HoN past beta and I'll probably never try LoL but I might have to get this

I didn't completely read your sentence. :derp

HON >>>> LoL. Is there any information into what they are adding to DotA2?
-
Everything that was in DOTA1 + community features and cheevs.
-
Damn, was hoping that they added the life and mana sphere drops that Storm of the Imperial Sanctum(an SC2 dota clone) had.
-
This is terrible. It's exactly what HoN was to the original DotA map except with the inclusion of Valve. I'll play League of Legends and enjoy it but I highly doubt they're going to be doing anything major with the dota genre.
I just wish they were doing something new.
-
HoN doesn't have Techies. :bow2

That sounds pretty cool actually
-
dota and its clones set the standard for worst community of any games ever, of all time
will this be any different
-
LoL has a great community, HoN has a hostile, awful community.
-
I always thought it was the other way because LoL gets all the kiddies whose parents won't pay the $30 or whatever it is for HoN
-
LoL has a shitty community. HoN has a shitter community.
-
I've played a number of rounds of LoL and I never came across any hostile players.
-
I never played LoL, but I enjoyed RoFL and LMAO.

Awesomeeeeee

I really wish the title to this game was DOTA: Source, since that's all it is. They've come out and said specifically that nothing has changed in terms of gameplay at all, and they're just taking DOTA All-Stars and porting it to Source.

HoN (and I would presume DotA) is a fine game and the community features and tutorials will ease new players in without having to dumb things down.
