Shoot, edit videos for different clients and do the occasional storyboard.

Right now I'm working on a recruitment video for local police and a promotional video for a local restaraunt.

Well, in regards to video, Final Cut is THE standard and it's only available for mac.

Photoshop and Illustrator are the same thing on pc and mac but I find it's a smoother experience on mac. So if you're in graphics it's not integral to own a mac because you can put files on disc and transfer over to mac with ease.

You could work from home and at work without owning the same type of computer.

With video you don't exactly have such a luxury.

What kind? A 13' mbp isn't enough for gaming, as far as I know. 15' and 17' are decent though. Or are you getting an imac?

I'm getting a refurb 13" MBP in the next month or two.

:bow Apple refurb store :bow2
Title: Re: DA OFFICIAL MAC THREAD
Post by: chronovore on October 15, 2010, 05:52:11 AM
The PowerBook I'm currently using was through an Apple-company-discount refurb program and OH, HAS IT SUCKED.

It's the only Mac I've had which has tested the "Windows feed on hate, Macs run on love" theory which has been my mantra since owning my first Mac SE/30 in college. This 17" PowerBook G4 showed up loose in the box, meaning no packing materials during shipping, it had the wrong restore discs packed in and, the piece de resistance, the outlet-to-adapter cable was missing.

Because it was not packed right during shipping, the PB had probably been damaged before it ever arrived. It experienced a range of problems which required it to be taken back to the Apple store a number of times. If I'd properly documented the problems, I probably could have negotiated for a new replacement. But looking back, I should have refused receipt of the computer the moment it arrived. What a trainwreck. But as trainwrecks go, it's still running four (five?) years later.  Kinda.

My point is (and I do have one) if you get a refurb and it is IN ANY WAY discernibly different from a new item, refuse it and ask for another. Seriously.

Why do you think that? I doubt it. I think they'll reveal details about OSX 10.7 though :drool

Royally fucked my Powermac g4 a little while ago so I'm going to gut it and refit it with new hardware and make my first Hackintosh :rock G4's had such amazing cases (nice design, built like brick shithouses).

If you are in graphics/video it would be advisable to own a mac.

I'm a web developer and it's basically a requirement I use Unix, Linux or OSX (Windows + Ruby on Rails =  >:(  :'(  :lol) and since I ponied up for a new MBP I haven't looked back to the former. Using all the great proprietary apps with no probs + the power of unix (X11, open source repositories) = me being much more productive :heartbeat

:lol You serious...? Think iPhone apps on mac, Steam doesn't have a market for that shit.

Agreed, fuck the mba. I'd rather just get an ipad.

sounds like 10.7 is trying to integrate a lot of the good stuff about iOS into OSX.

I'd take a mba + 10.7 over a iPad + iOS anyday.

Oh I see what you're getting at.
I play games on mine. Air is good as a laptop, but it would probably suck for games.
Gaming's not the main reason I chose a Mac though, clearly, but it was a good excuse for upping the specs :)
It uses the same graphics solution as the current 13" MBP.  You'd probably get 720p and 30fps for stuff like MW2, which isn't bad for the form factor.

nope. the core i7qm procs (as opposed to the arrandale core i7m procs) are four cores, eight threads. the arrandale chips are all 2 cores, 4 threads and are significantly weaker despite the higher clocks.

What model do you own and what's the current firmware version its currently running?

As for the benefits of jailbreaking: installing applications that Apple would never approve of like phone UI and system tweaks, which improves upon the OS a lot, and of course :pirate

Title: Re: DA OFFICIAL APPLE THREAD
Post by: Shaka Khan on December 05, 2010, 07:02:20 PM
It's important to know which version it's running on in order to pick the right jailbreaking tool. Go to "settings" > "General" > "About" and look for the "version" field.

If it's running 4.2.1 use this guide to jailbreak: Link (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12967).
RedSn0w (JB tool) will perform a tethered JB, meaning you'll need its assistance to boot your device every time you turn it off or run out of batteries (you'll have to wait for an untethered solution).

If it's running 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, or 4.1 use this guide to jailbreak: Link (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12140).
Limerain (JB tool) will perform an untethered JB, so reboot away.

You're lucky.

Don't think about updating to 4.2.1 until they release an untethered JB.

I went to the Apple Store yesterday to put my greasy mitts on some new hardware. The iPad table was crowded as hell, so I checked out the MacBook Air first. The 13 inch one is really, really nice. The 11 inch one has a good, full-sized keyboard and is a more manageable size if thinking about portability. I'm liking the screen resolution better on the 13 inch, and the weight of the 11 inch.

When an iPad station finally freed up, I tried using the keyboard. Setting the iPad at an optimal typing angle with their special grippy stand (which isn't something it would normally benefit from), I began to try typing. I kept mis-pressing the keys, and the iOS kept trying to autocomplete for me. I was quickly annoyed; maybe there's a learning curve, but it was stress-inducing. Like the Newton, this is a "consumption" device, made for reviewing existing content, not for creating new content. But a good portion of what I want it for is email and forum responses, not movie watching, game playing, or comic/newspaper/book reading. It seems like a bad choice in tose instances. Is it?

The placement of the shift key annoys the tits off me. I'm always hitting Z instead. I CAN touch-type on it, but it's not a pleasant experience, and not reliable either. If I want to write more than a few lines, I always go to a real k/b instead.

I only have a few apps/tweaks installed, basically the ones I use on daily basis, but they should give you an idea:

- Lockinfo: replaces the lockscreen with neat and organized lists of calender events/missed called/unread mail or messages/unchecked push messages/ weather forcast. It can also be set as your homescreen and/or linked to a touch gesture that activates it as a drop down layer. Customizable and themeable.
- BiteSMS: powerful SMS app, has many features. I mainly use it for the quick reply/compose feature (compose and reply anywhere, eliminating the need to exit apps in order to use those features).
- Action menu: adds to the copy/paste pop-menu extra functions like lookup (search/dictionary/translate), scroll up/down, add location, clipboard history, favorites.
- Fullscreen Safari: self explanatory.
- Safari Download Manager: self explanatory.
- iFile: think of it as a windows explorer or Finder for the iOS. Can view a wide variety of files, even zip and unzip archives.
- infinifolders: Add as many apps to any folder as you like, unrestricted by the 12 apps per folder limit set by apple.
- Folders within folders: self explanatory.
- infinidock: have as many icons as you like on your dock, set them either to scroll infinitely or be spread among several pages.
- remove background: simple tweak that removes all backgrounded apps by holding the status bar.
- sbsettings: swipe the status bar anywhere to reveal a drop down menu containing a variety of toggles (wifi/3G/bluetooth/brightness...etc), saves you the trouble of going to the Settings menu to toggle any of them on/off. Customizable and themeable.
- Screendimmer: you can set a timer to dim the screen/turn it off so you don't have to rely on the annoying auto-lock feature in order to preserve the battery.
- switcher mod: all icons on the switcher dock have visible (x) so you don't have to hold an icon, wait for the to wiggle effect, then start closing them off. Has more features that I don't care for/recall.
- Yourtube: save youtube videos.
- Winterboard: Themes management app.
- WiFi Sync: sync with iTunes over wifi.
- Pwntunes: skip the iTunes altogether and drag and drop your files directly to your iDevice.

I used to have a lot more before updating, I'm waiting for most of them to receive compatibly updates.

Edit: I think I met my applefaggotry monthly quota in less than 5 posts.

Fanks, I'll take this as gospel.

I had a Newton MP100 and an MP120 (it might have been a 110? I forget...) and the data entry aspects of handwriting there were pretty annoying. This felt like that did.

I'm going to stick with an actual computer. The MacBook Air is really nice. Though there is a small chance I'll elect to cheap-out and get the white MacBook.

I jailbroke my ipod. Downloaded the dTunes add on...which is pretty underwhelming. I'm gonna start looking more at the games and stuff now. Any suggestions on the best add ons and games?

Since Apple approves most of the submitted games to the appstore, you won't find any worthy games in Cydia.

As for dTunes, I haven't tried it so I can't comment or suggest better alternatives. One thing you should know about Cydia is that there are a lot of crappy of content, or good content with crappy UIs, since apps don't go through an approval process and anything goes.

You'll find many, many movie/tv/music-streaming apps that are basically mobile-optimized portals to shady webcontent, so heads-up.

As for suggestions, I listed some of my most used tweaks for Himu in my previous post. I personally think the right approach to Cydia is not going around aimlessly downloading any tweaks or apps, but to use your iDevice the way it is until you grow frustrated with a specific OS limitation. That's when you start searching for the right Cydia app to alleviate the problem. Don't bloat your device with crap or you'll fuck it up.

Ah, I rely on it for capitalizing my sentences, all references to "I," and adding apostrophes into contractions. I'll leave it on.

As a test last night, I was visiting EB just using my iPod Touch. It works pretty well! But I feel the eye-strain pretty quickly.

It's so bogus that Siri isn't built in to run on iPad 2; all that shit is processed server-side, and the iPad has a mic. C'mon.
