Title: Buying a PSP 3000 - What to buy?
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on November 03, 2010, 01:13:40 PM
Within a few minutes, I'm going to get a PSP 3000 and the new Ys.

My question is what are the good games that are worth buying?

The only condition is that I'm a yokel that lives in the sticks with an internet connection that might as well be 56K.  So downloading Cladun is out.

I prefer RPGs and strategy games but I am flexible and will probably eventually get games like GOW.

Thank you!

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is awesome. get that.

if you like music games, rock band unplugged is fun and only $5, same with DJ Max Portable.

also make sure u get Kingdom Herats

The Warriors...great game by Rockstar, follows the movie
Dante Inferno...good game, fun to play, platforming is shit though, high production values

Those are the only two games that I actually finished on PSP :lol

As for RPGs,I would suggest that you try some great PS1 RPGs...much easier to play on small screen, high production values

PSP itself has lots of mediocre RPGs,nothing really stands out...imo

Half Minute Hero is one of the most creative games for the system, definitely get it.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is probably another good pick, if you enjoyed the first one. Of course, you're already getting Ys.

Crisis Core wasn't bad, though the short and simplistic repetitive missions were annoying (luckily they can be avoided)

Every Extend Extra is dirt cheap now, but an awesome action game/audiovisual experience courtesy of Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

Some other RPGs that I haven't played:

Brave Story
Hexyz Force
Astonisha Story (though everyone says to avoid this one)
Crimson Gem Saga
Mimana Ayar Chronicles

LUMINES (1 or 2). Best puzzle game since Tetris.

DJ Max is awesome. Great rhythm game. Gitaroo Man might be great as well, I'm not sure. I've only played the PS2 version.

Wipeout, OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast, and Ridge Racer for some arcade racing greatness.

Persona 3 Portable is the best RPG on the system... but the PS2 version is better.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is okay. It has decent strategy gameplay, but the characters and story are total shounen shit. VC1 on PS3 is better.

God of War Chains of Olympus is decent, but it's only a few hours long and there's pretty much no replay value.

Patapon 2 is pretty cool. It's kind of a rhythm game/RPG hybrid. Pretty cheap these days too.

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Ultimate Ghost n' Goblins, and Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? for old school action-platforming awesomeness.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is a good action RPG co-op grindan adventure.

Some people seem to like Half-Minute Hero. I played it for like 10 minutes and got bored since the game practically played itself. I dunno.

And that just about covers every good game on the platform.

mmm what else could you pick?

jeanne d'arc is a nice JSRPG by level 5,the art is nice and the premise starts strong tough it devolve into generic JRPG pap near the end

patapon is a pretty original game,it works like a very simplified strategy game but you give order by beating drums in rhythm, there are also small rpg element, the third one should get released recently

if you like card game there is the yu-gi-oh tcg,the last version got released a week ago and basicaly has all the cards released so far,the cpu sometimes pull off dumb moves but it's still pretty fun to play

i made a thread a while ago about zettai hero project which is the last game released by the team that made disgaea,it has the quirky humor and extreme powerleveling we all love in NIS game but as a roguelike it falls a little flat

dungeon maker is a pretty original title,it plays like a crappy version of diablo but the gimmick is that you build the dungeon you are supposed to loot so for example, the game might ask you to get a bone so you have to get enough money to build a graveyard so you can fight skeletons, the action is dull but making the dungeon bigger and bigger is kind of addictive

megaman powerup is a remake of the original megaman,it's done quite well

monster hunter... i loved playing the wii version online but as a single player game played on the psp it doesn't work,if you can get some buddies to play this with you go ahead but i wouldn't recomend doing so otherwise

metal gear ac!d gets a bad reputation for being a "card game" but it's actualy closer to a stealth version of x-com... it's a little slow but nice to play

metal gear portable ops is like metal gear but with small RPG element's added,it's pretty good one

if you haven't played them on the GBA there are all the various sting game, personaly the only one i like is riviera but a lot of people seems to dig them... beats me!

prinny: can i really be the hero is like ghost & goblins but with more awesome wacky japanese humor

kingdom hearts birth by sleep is.... well it's kingdom hearts,i like it but it might not be your cup of tea

Oh yeah, I'm with Magus, MGA 1 and 2 are excellent games. Metal Gear Ac!d 2 > Every MGS game except 1

Thanks for some of the great suggestions.

I tried three places (Best Buy, two Gamestops) to get the new Ys: two didn't have it and one only had a single copy of the premium version left.  Which I bought.  I'll keep it in pristine condition and hope to sell it off for twice the price a few years from now.

I do have to say that the Gamestop people that sold me that game and the PSP were socially adjusted enough not to pimp the discount card until it is uncomfortable nor did I hear any embarrassing geek chatter.  I was impressed!

I have been totally neglecting my PSP after a bit of DS buying midyear. I want Valkyria 2.  :'(

I would not recommend Valkyria 2 unless you really liked the first one.  What I played of it was too pointless/grindy for me to care.  Since I only mildly enjoyed the first Valkyria I'm skipping 2 and will give #3 a chance since it looks more interesting and focused.

A 32GB SD card.

The PSP 3000 takes only Pro Duo Memory Cards. Regular SD is useless in this case.

And I'll throw in another vote for Half Minute Hero. Motorstorm: Arctic Edge and Wipeout Pulse are great if you like racing games, and Resistance Retribution is probably the best shooter on the system.
