That list has a whole bunch of mediocre games on it (with plenty of great games missing) and the ordering is fucked. What a mess.

WRONG! III was groundbreaking in so many ways, VC and San Andreas were just noodling unneeded details into an already structural function, like some spider on LSD. Liberty City Stories is III with a map and a user-adjustable camera; it's pretty great. SA is too big, Vice City is too flat.

Bully > Every GTA ever. As for SotC supremacy I guess IGN's editors have the assburgers. Kind of explains a lot.
Truer words were never spoken. Bully is great; it shows what works, why GTA III's systems were so compelling, while eschewing the violence and sex that made GTA series such a media catalyzer.

San Andreas was THE game of last gen.  GTAIII may have been the catalyst and Vice City may have had the soundtrack, but San Andreas is infinitely better than either of the the two without a doubt.  And it's still the only one of the three that's still playable today.  GTAIII and VC feel absolutely fucking distinguished mentally-challenged now....I don't know why those controls didn't bother me back then.

This. A thousand times this. Bully is my favorite game out of the entire PS2 library, it's fucking fantastic.

SotC is far from the "best game" on PS2. I have to agree with Beezy, MGS3:S would've made more sense.

Bully and GTA = apples and oranges

It's a GTA game without all the trappings that put people in a tizzy. So if GTA = tizzy-making to you, if you're taking it from the perspective of visual style, maturity of tone, amount of violence or sex, sure. I agree. If you're talking about writing style, gameplay, progression... I'm not sure what to say.

It's really not a GTA game though aside from the fact that they're both open world games. GTA is about driving and shooting while Bully is a brawler. Generic sandbox elements are about the only things they share.

I compare GTA and Bully on the grounds that they were published by a company that usually leads the pack in sandbox games.

imo GTA and Bully have more in common than GTA and Saint's Row.

They're very similar if you compare them to a lot of other games out there.  It's like how you'd compare Oblivion to Fallout 3.

But yeah, I wouldn't say Bully is the best GTA game.  This is going to sound stupid but both games had different thrills even though you can argue that some of the progression is similar.

That's a good point; it hadn't dawned on me that BULLY's OWG "flavor" is a brawler. Rather than taking the genre-based perspective that you have, I've always assumed that the hand-to-hand in GTA series, including the "improved" HtH in GTA IV, sucked balls because there's no call to go HtH because the emphasis is on ranged combat. I've been lumping ranged and hand-to-hand combat together, and now that seems like an oversimplification.

But it's also unnecessarily limiting to claim that BULLY is entirely different from GTA because of the balance of the type of combat. They share more gameplay than you can find differing examples, I'll guess. Even given the "generic sandbox" elements, you've still got an emphasis on vehicle-based transportation (even if it's a skateboard and bicycles), establishing a Wanted Level during mission completion (or free play) and evasion of authority figures as a win condition... and despite the brawler sensibility that comes from having tuned melee gameplay, the mid- to endgame is largely about ranged combat, with the spud gun, rocket launcher, and even a sniper-scope on the slingshot.

You're right, but I'm talking as a game. I felt it was the most underrated R* game of last gen, and I'm amazed that Rockstar didn't use it as a premise for GTA4. I mean, the whole "npc's have to call the cops before the cops arrive" thing was novel, and it left for a lot of gameplay opportunities, leaves you the chance to bust their heads open before they dial 911. And even when the cops do arrive, if you play your cards right you can avoid detection by hiding in the shadows. The moveset, the way you got new moves, the variety, the atmosphere, the music, the dialogue... Amazing game. Unlike others, I was never too impressed by Bully. I thought it was mostly boring.

Play on pc. Controls are fine. Well, except for driving.

San Andreas is the only ps2 GTA (well, not count LCS and VCS, which are great too) I've never sucessfully replayed. I can replay GTA3 and pull off one heck of a speed run, completing it in only 5 hours, I played the shit out of that game and can still play the shit out of that game today. Vice City is objectively better however, due to the better missions and variety. Although it's not my favorite (it's my second favortie), Vice City is objectively the best Grand Theft Auto, particularly on pc.

San Andreas was what I considered the top dog..when it came out. But replaying it is torture. It's too big, locations are too far apart, playing the taxi, ambulance, or cop R3 missions are torture because everything is fucking five minutes away, which loses the arcade-y feel that GTA is known for. The car physics are trash and most cars just aren't too fun to drive. The characters are ridiculous, the missions even more ridiculous. The game has a lot of great ideas, but I don't think it has aged well at all; it feels like a plethora of ideas not executed well rather than a lot of great ones. Still, it's a classic in the pages of history, well deserved in fact.

MGS3 just didn't click for me - i got about half way through and just wasn't "getting" it, i need to go back and go back through it

Have you played Subsistence (or whatever the re-release was called)?

I liked MGS3 a lot when I first played it, but I had problems with the camera because it couldn't keep up with the newer more open levels.  Subsistence lets you have a regular camera you could rotate around snake with the right stick and helped make the game better.

I wonder if they will let you move and shoot in the 3DS version.

People always talk about how great the third person camera is but it's not always ideal. Thankfully the game lets you choose between top down and third person on the fly by clicking in right stick.

Still, I don't think his problem will go away. MGS3 is great, but it's such a slow fucking game. Easily the slowest MGS, and that's why its' the least replayable for me despite it arguably being my favorite. It's hiding in the grass, your face in mud all the damn time, and that slows the game pacing tremendously. Not to mention, when you do get caught, the alert lasts for too damn long.
