It's like TNT, except with worse movies and less Law & Order.

They also make their own sit-coms, which are apparently horrible.

why the fuck didn't comedy central grab him? grab conan and you set up an hour and a half talk show block. two of these shows already surround politics. why not have one that's steeped solely around daily life like conan with some sketches and shit? missed opportunity for both conan and comedy central. tbs sucks.

George Lopez has been on TBS for a few years with his talk show I think. If that can survive then surely Conan will.

he'd get more viewers on comedy central. the man is already rich!
I am pretty sure TBS has much better ratings than Comedy Central.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS
Post by: Mupepe on November 08, 2010, 04:56:19 PM
Lopez tonight has only been on the air for a year.  And I think you're underestimating the loyalty of hispanics and the shittiness of the average TBS viewer.  tyler.perry.shows.  He doesn't fit in.

BTW, I'm trying to say he's too fucking good for TBS.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS

Unless he utterly bombs he should be there for quite a while.

I'm pretty sure he's going to be there for quite a while in other words.

He doesn't need Leno or Letterman ratings to stay there.

So awesome. As much as I would question Conan working at Comedy Central, since they're just about as shady as NBC, if he starred in his own sketch comedy show ala Chappelle's Show with Andy at his side, it would undoubtedly be awesome. It's no question Conan's an amazing writer, but back when the whole Tonight Show business was going on it was said that the current format of talk shows is boring and dated, and I agree. I don't think anyone can put on a good talk show, it's just an archaic show format. Unless it's Ellen.

That's the overall rating and yes it's pretty bad (especially for a hyped up premiere), but the key is the rating for the 18-49 demographic which hasn't been released yet.

Still should have went with comedy central.

Still, I thought the show was fantastic and it's everything I wanted. The opening skit was amazing.

It is. Especially when you consider it's a talk show. But for a premiere to a highly marketed television premiere, it's pretty bad.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS

nah.  i want him to fail so that all those bastards that didn't watch the nbc show will feel like shit and cry again when it happens.

i hate talk shows by the way.  i just wanna be an a-hole.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS
Post by: Mupepe on November 09, 2010, 10:50:07 AM
Conan should do movies or a full skit show.  I'd watch him then.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS
Post by: Himu on November 09, 2010, 11:00:23 AM
Why DID he go with a talk show instead of a skit show? Wouldn't a skit show akin to Chappelle's Show be more popular? I haven't watched a good skit show in a while. It's obvious that Conan isn't a particularly big fan of the traditional talk show format, the interviewing for instance -- he has always been nervous in them -- and not to mention the monologues -- he seems to be one of the few that realizes how silly and outdated they are. So it seems crazy to me that he's fine going back to the standard talk show format when he appears to want to or has the capacity to do something more non-conventional.

Maybe I'm overestimating him a bit or maybe I'm reading his emotions on tv wrong. It just always felt that while he loves doing a talk show, he wants to do more than that and the only reason he's settled for the traditional talk show format in the past is because he was stuck with that job and it wasn't worth making abstract or whatever, but here he is now starting a new show on a new network that lacks the negatives of the network infrastructure and it's the same format.

Quote
TBS

In its second week on TBS, the high-energy late-night series Lopez Tonight averaged 1.3 million viewers; 1 million households; 440,000 adults 18-34; and 790,000 adults 18-49.  The Wednesday, Nov. 18, episode was particularly strong, delivering 1.7 million viewers.

    * Since its Nov. 9 premiere, Lopez Tonight on TBS has averaged 1.5 million viewers; 1.1 million households; 519,000 adults 18-34; and 908,000 adults 18-49.  It has delivered outstanding growth for TBS in the 11 p.m. hour, with viewers up 38%, households up 31% and adults 18-34 and adults 18-49 both up 40% when compared to the same time period for the prior four weeks.

    * Among both adults 18-34 and 18-49, the first two weeks of Lopez Tonight outdelivered the season-to-date averages for The Colbert Report, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Last Call with Carson Daly. In addition, Lopez Tonight outdelivered the season-to-date average for Late Show with David Letterman and The Wanda Sykes Show among adults 18-34.

So Conan could lose a third of his first-night audience in the next two weeks and still double Lopez's performance, which was considered a huge success for TBS.

Wow, the Lopez Tonight show has been doing a lot better than I assumed.  Gimme that crow.

Either way, I agree with Himu.  He's always seemed tired of the dated talk show platform.  He just seems more enthusiastic when he's doing something besides the regular ass interviews or monologues.

So why didn't he go with a non-talk show? The whole thing makes no sense to me. Then again, he says it was his dream.
Title: Re: Conan on TBS
Post by: Himu on November 09, 2010, 11:11:43 AM
Really. Hmm, I figured it'd work for Conan because a lot of his most popular shticks are from his skits already.

Post by: Robo on November 09, 2010, 11:15:46 AM
The talk show format is probably his best fit.  He gets to be a spontaneous, ridiculous personality -- his biggest strength as a comedian -- AND do the occasional skits without living or dying by how good they are.

A "1" rating =! 1 million people.

I'm not sure what formula is used - in that same article it says Conan got a 2.9 household, with 4.3million household and 3.3million 18-49.

not really. pd just needs a sense of appreciation of self deprecation in humor.

Self deprecation humor is funny. Late night hosts are completely outdated, and cheap humor. The punchlines are rarely laugh out funny, and instead garner a chuckle or two, forming a chain of half hearted chuckles to some climax that's usually forgettable.

I have better things to do at 11pm or midnight than watch middle aged or or old men trying to be edgy. The entire style is played the fuck out.

very hard to hate on live Muse. Or live Rush

Geddy Lee's singing sounds like an elf being tortured.  Also, they're pretentious libertarian fucktards.

So I'm guessing Triumph the insult dog belongs to NBC?

I thought I read somewhere recently that NBC is allowing all the old IPs except Triumph. Which is weird because back when this all started going down, the word was that NBC could hold on to all the IPs except Triumph because he belongs to Robert Smigel.

It's a mystery.

Meh, Conan can still theoretically use any of his old IPs, he just needs to get permission from NBC to do so, usually through a license.  I'd wager he had to pay a license for the masturbating bear.  For Triumph, any time Smigel comes on I'm sure Conan would be willing to pay up, but otherwise I think Conan's going to be starting fresh with characters.

People honestly find him funny? I'm watching his monologue shocked anyone finds this shit funny in 2010.
its a white thing?

not really. pd just needs a sense of appreciation of self deprecation in humor.

The entire style is played the fuck out.

won't get any arguments here

Someone should sell Charlyne Yi stress dolls that squeal with pain when you squeeze them.
