Title: bye bye Gamebryo

Emergent Game Technologies has fallen. Their attempt to resurrect themselves in September with the Krome Studio partnership was short-lived. Days after the Emergent/Krome announcement came word that Krome was shuttering its studio, leaving little doubt that Emergent's days were numbered as well.

Emergent was able to secure over $30 million in funding over the years and secured a number of key accounts in China including Tencent. It obviously wasn't enough. We hope the assets find a good home.

Emergent Game Technologies (“Company” or “”Emergent”) is a technology company that directly licenses and supports its products, Gamebryo® and Gamebryo LightSpeed®, to customers around the world.  Founded in 2000 with a mission of developing tools and technologies for 3D interactive entertainment, Emergent merged with NDL in 2005, the company that created the Gamebryo game development engine and tools.

The Company’s assets are well-positioned to capitalize on several industry trends – largely around online games and online distribution – which enable the potential for game developers to reach customers more effectively through direct relationships online and more efficiently by constantly developing new content.  Online game consumers have a rapidly growing appetite for progressive content.  Emergent’s products can help accelerate the demand for 3D content by providing a higher quality of supply in less time and with less risk.

Some people will be happy for sure, but I expect some cold showers in the future.
Every engine has its good and bad sides.

Gamebryo was fine and very capable. No idea why the bottom feeders at GAF are all doing backflips over this news.

I disagree, although the celebration on GAF is idiotic and immature just like everything on GAF, Gamebryo is not something I'm going to miss. It's easily the worst game engine to come out of this gen. A buggy, ugly mess.

Gamebryo is much older than this gen.

what was wrong with gamebryo? the issues bethesda games had were largely of bethesda's origin, by and large, not the engine itself. well, the streaming/thunking issues were resolved largely three or so years ago.

I suppose that's true, Bethesda's been the only dev that's really using the engine. The 360 port of Bully didn't come out too hot at launch though.

On consoles, maybe. But not on PC.

Aye like some of you guys have been saying(except Startselect), Gamebryo is an investment, but once you put that effort into getting your framework it was a really good engine; the issues Bethesda had, were mostly just dumb coding mistakes, except the dodgy collision detection that could get you stuck in places that one is all Gamebryo because of its dodgy default collision system, but again they could have made their own ABV system and fixed it with that.

Feel bad for the Emergent guys; they were really good guys in any dealings with them, that were let down by a company running an unsustainable business model. I doubt they'll have much trouble in finding game engine work in North Carolina though.

Well then I guess my distaste was aimed at the wrong party. Seems like Bethesda is the one to blame here, though Fallout 3 was a marked improvement compared to Oblivion.

For all their bugs I still have a lot of fun with Bethesdas games. I laughed when I read about how they were trying to figure out how to put ladders into fallout 3 and couldn't figure it out so they dropped them. If they switch to ID Tech 5 and it helps them make better games I'm all for it. If they improve Gamebryo for their next game as I've heard they've done it'll still be good. Maybe they'll have ladders  :o

This is fucking mindblowing. Bethesda confirmed worst big-name dev.

it was because of npc behavior, from what i read

with ladders in the world, important npcs died too often before the player ever reached them

can't say i've missed them, climbing ladders has sucked in just about every first and third person game i've ever played
