Yes, Brian Zoubek. Might give you only 5 points, but guarandernteed to give you 5 offensive boards. Might pick up 5 fouls, but will not get called for at least 5 more. With him, you might not win big. Without him, you might not win at all. Brian. Freaking. Zoubek.
Duke is return a lot of scoring, gaining a stellar point guard, but who is going to fill the big man's shoes? This team goes as far as Mason and Miles Plumlee can carry them.
So anyway, Duke's the top team, coming off a rather unexpected championship, but a repeat run is hardly a given in a one-and-done tournament format.
The season is now well underway.
Go [insert your team here]!

Can't wait for the MSU v Duke game. Really think MSU might be the beter team
-
The edge may very well be that the game is in Cameron. Still, it's a good early season test for both teams. Duke could potentially face #3 Kansas State next week and then definitely #2 Michigan State the week after that. Then the Butler rematch 3 days later. Not a bad non-conference slate. Afterwards, it gets easier before getting into conference play.
-
Butler just got beat down.
I just found out that tall skinny forward entered the draft last year and was a lottery pick. lol
-
Butler made a somewhat decent game of it, because they were down by 25 or so early in the second half, but yeah... maybe they read a few too many of their own press-clippings (and losing Hayward sure hurts).
-
Hayward, that's his name. I wish I was tall and lanky so I could get millions of dollars to ride the bench
-
If you can hit the college 3 and dominate mid-major competition, you too can ride the NBA pine.
I think he'll be much better than Adam Morrison, though.
Edit: Oh wow, I just tried to find Morrison's stats for this year to compare to Hayward (2.8ppg). Apparently, Morrison isn't even on a roster, got waived by Washington in the preseason.
-
I saw Utah play in person the other night, Hayward is tiny. He's got a long way to go physically, makes Mike Dunleavy Jr look like he was Tom Chambers when he came into the league.
It was a little shocking.
Haven't seen Duke play yet, looks like K switched up the lineup and started Kelly tonight over Miles. Mason came with around 14 boards, he's the true player of the two. Seth Curry is killing it two games in, shooting about 65% from three so far.
-
I like that there's been all this talk about Duke and no one has mentioned Singler.
I wish I had an NCAA team, the closest I have is UTEP since Tim Hardaway went there. I usually end up supporting the mid majors in the tournament, and St Marys last year had a bunch of Aussies.
-
Watching Duke play Colgate on ESPN3.com. This is Duke's only game of the year that will not be on TV.
Same starting 5 as last game, Ryan Kelly in for Miles Plumlee.
-
Score 1 for the Big Eleven tonight. Minnesota beat North Carolina. Apparently, Harrison Barnes was 0 for 13 from the floor tonight. Ouch.
Meanwhile, Duke played lights out in the second half. scored 50 points in the first 12 minutes after halftime. Not bad.
-
The biggest game of the early season is about to tip off on ESPN2. #1 Duke vs. #4 Kansas State. Neutral* court.
*Kansas City, MO.
-
MSU choked early this year :fbm
-
Eh, it's early. Not really all that worried about what happens in November. The worst that can happen is an injury to a star player. Anything short of that is meaningless come March.
-
Duke wins comfortably, 82-68. Kind of a sloppy game, the refs blew the whistles a lot, hard to establish a rhythm. But Duke forced a lot of turnovers and K-State apparently went K-State and missed a ton of free throws. Duke's the better team at this point, though.
-
Duke v MSU tonight. Should be a good game
-
Duke isn't going to face a team as good as Michigan State in the ACC, that's for sure. Doesn't mean Duke won't get tested, particularly with road games at Florida State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and I'm also not ready to write off North Carolina. But Michigan State is the toughest opponent they'll have and they're fortunate to get them at home.
-
Wisconsin just hung a football score on NC State. 87-48.
-
Duke 84-79, but MSU played them tough just like I knew they would. Irving is scary good, but MSU's Korie Lucious was also outstanding.
Neither team played their best game, but it was a great early season game nonetheless.
-
Yea great game. Irving looks dangerous as hell.
Big 10 is holding their own this year over all
-
2011 College Basketball Thread of who replaces Brian Zoubek
The answer so far does not end with Plumlee.
Duke took the L tonight at Florida State. They're a good-not-great team without Irving.
-
Yeah, noticed a couple of games ago only 7 guys played. New year, same shit unfortunately.
Without Irving we really need to shoot from the outside well. Hopefully there won't be too many more games when Curry and Dawkins are throwing up bricks.
And Mason needs to stop playing like Miles and live up to his potential.
-
Michigan beat MSU. Holy shit the Spartans have literally fallen off a cliff this year. I never thought they were the #2 team in the country and just assumed they'd do what they always do: have a somewhat disappointing season then go far in the tournament. But with this implosion they might not even make the tournament.
I wonder if the players have lost respect for Izzo due to him taking so long to decide whether to come back. Regardless it seems like these guys need to be shipped out of town
-
Yeah was really surprised to see KSU and MSU struggling so much. Makes Duke's early season wins seem pretty meaningless now.
-
St. Johns is pounding Duke in MSG. 46-25 at the half. Yeah, Duke is getting exposed big time.
I watched the 1992 ACC Tournament championship game yesterday (available at http://vault.theacc.com/). That 92 team would destroy this team. Put Irving back in the lineup, result would be the same. Duke might be good by today's standard (although today's game might beg to differ), but that team was dangerous every spot on the floor. For real dangerous, not just occasional flash dangerous.
-
Duke v. North Carolina, kids. Right now.
North Carolina has been playing a lot better of late, they can really give Duke a run in this game.
-
More like they can give Duke another pounding. 43-29 at the half, UNC. Don't know when it happened, but Carolina is the better team right now.
-
Didn't see that coming. Granted, Duke was playing at home, but after Carolina demolished them in the first half, I thought it was academic. Guess not.
Duke 79-73.
-
Damn, surprising win indeed.
-
Just as I was kinda/sorta wondering if Ohio State could go unbeaten. They're so much better than the rest of the conference it's hilarious.
-
Michigan up on Wisconsin with 2min left :o
edit: omg :lol :lol :lol
-
That didn't work out too well for the Wolverines.
-
6 missed free throws down the stretch, plus the whole "leaving dude wide fucking open" thing
-
4 of 20 behind the arc does in the Blue Devils on the road again.
-
In related news, Seth Greenberg might be off the bubble and in the tournament this year.
Of course, they could very well lose to Boston College and Clemson this week, get bounced out of the first round of the ACC Tournament, and be right back to sweating bullets on selection Sunday.
-
Looks like Michigan is going to make it into the tournament. I really didn't expect anything from them after the Manny Harris fiasco and another ehhh recruiting class. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple years at the program, and whether they can build on this. Last time they made the tournament they followed up with a lackluster season.
MSU...damn. At this point Izzo is probably happy some of these guys will be gone for good soon. I spent so much of this year assuming they'd make a strong enough comeback to make the tournament then go on a run.
-
And, as predicted, VT went on to lose to BC and Clemson and now all bets are off.
-
Duke, tell Ryan Kelly he's not allowed to shoot another 3 until he makes one. I realize this puts him in a difficult position. But he's 0 for 5. It would be nice if Singler wasn't 2 of 7 overall, too.
-
Clemson v NC has been a great game so far.
mich trying to hold on against OSU
-
In the end, Clemson stays true to Clemson and loses.
-
NC was playing good defense, but that doesn't excuse that horrible final play to send it to OT. learn to dribble
-
Go Dawgs!! :rock
-
Woooo!!!
-
Duke's up 15 with under 4 to go against UNC in the ACC championship game.
Hold on, Devils. Just hold on.
-
17 with about a minute and a half to go. I guess they'll hold on.
Edit: 75-58 Final.
-
#1 The Ohio State University - East
#1 Kansas - Southwest
#1 Pittsburgh - Southeast
#1 Duke - West
-
Michigan a #8 seed? lol wut
Damn the east is stacked
-
FLORIDA IS A 2 SEED IN THE SOUTHEAST
What the crap, committee?
Oh, and VT got jobbed again.
-
BELMONT, MY SCHOOL IS IN!!!
yay!
-
Gonna make the official thread tomorrow, and create a yahoo EB pool
-
Anybody got a download link to the HBO UNLV doc? I can't find it anywhere.
-
Coach K said Irving might play (but not start) this weekend. :hyper
I'm happy for the kid if he can get some minutes. All appearances are that he has been a tremendous teammate despite not being able to play since the beginning of December.
