I wouldn't mind a Mass Effect MP shooter but that doesn't look like Mass Effect so its probably something else.  :-\

Bioware bought the Alpha Protocol IP and are going to make it worthwhile instead of a buggy ass okay game.

Probably something like a Mass Effect prequel. Or Jade Empire 2 with guns.

That'd be pretty awesome, I don't know too much of the premise of Alpha Protocol (by the time it came on my rader it was already declared a turd) but I liked what little I read up on it. Would be cool to see someone do it right.

They already did it right the first time.  AP is a really good take on a modern day military/spy rpg.

looks like another post-apocalyptic shooter, judging from this still in the teaser.

could be a mass effect spin-off shooter, as peeps at gaf are saying the dude looks like he's holding an Incisor rifle
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=24433705&postcount=39

I hope Bioware hasn't taken to heart the good things said about ME2's shooter mechanics and decided to do a straight up action game.
Title: Re: "New" Bioware game
Post by: Great Rumbler on November 17, 2010, 11:01:05 AM
The combat in ME2 was greatly improved over ME1, but I don't know if a full-blown action game could really stand on its own with a combat system like that. Of course, at this point, it's all just speculation. It could very well be as much of an RPG as ME2.

yeah, I just got a really strong 'Killzone' vibe from that teaser.

RPG mechanics :rock

I was thinking, though, that Bioware could do something interesting with a full-blown action game. There could be weapons/upgrades to find from fighting enemies, a branching storyline, and dialog choices within a Gears of War-esque framework.

I think the problem is when you make a true hybrid game you don't have enough time to honestly polish both an RPG and a supreme shooter. Look at something like Deus Ex. As great as it was, it was actually a poor shooter. So if the game is mostly just pure action I could potentially see them doing a credible job if they brought in the right people to make the game. If its a hybrid affair the shooting won't be as good as it could be would be my guess.

Makes me respect the fairly good balance they were able to strike with Mass Effect 2.

But basically this boils down to EA trying to create their own Call of Duty level franchise. They will throw as many shooter ideas at the wall until they find one that eventually sticks.

What if this is like some Phantom Dust type shit where you go online and fight dudes with crazy powers?

The major reason why I kinda want a Mass Effect style multiplayer game is that I think Mass Effect does a great job of guns and magic via biotic powers. There really isn't a shooter that has that mix currently on the market. It would be kinda kick ass to combine the two in a multiplayer game.

It really isn't.

In SMT Nocturne, you're a student who witnesses the end of the world and is turned into a demon. He's just a normal dude, thrown in an completely fucked up situation.

Or The Longest Journey: art student is sent to a fantasy world and interacts between two different worlds.

Or Persona 4: mysterious murders appear in town and with your newfound demon powers, find a way to stop the murders by jumping into alternate dimensions inside various television sets.

Far more interesting than standard fantasy or sci fi that makes up the genre and far more relatable in terms of themes of symbolism.

Yeah prerendered stuff

Most likely rumor
multiplayer oriented Mass Effect spinoff made by Bioware Montreal

via Kotaku
Quote
That Mass Effect game is not a massively multiplayer online version of BioWare's sci-fi RPG series, but a game that's designed to appeal more to the Call of Duty market, according to that source. We're told to expect player progression in the vein of Activision's wildly popular online shooter along with some sort of single-player component that does not feature Mass Effect's Commander Shepard in a leading role.

So yeah,COD in space...space marines

EA probably wants to be first with "COD in space" type game,Activision has one in the making

Fantasy in a non-generic setting.

"Mass Effect 2 has real-time action-based combat, therefore it cannot be an RPG."

"Mass Effect 2 has the rpg depth of a Ratchet and Clank game, therefore it cannot be an rpg."

Let's be real here, Mass Effect 1 is an rpg. It has a whole slew of customization systems, loot (even if it's shit) and more. I cannot say the same for ME2. It is more like a third person shooter with quests, so basically, more in the vein of an action adventure than an rpg.

That's not to say that's a bad thing, not at all. ME2 benefited heavily from this more streamlined approach. But it is no longer an rpg. There's a vast difference between being an element and being a full fleshed out feature. As it stands, ME2 is an action adventure with rpg elements.

Still doesn't change the fact it's in the top 5 games this gen.

Other American rpgs from the past 5 years? Like what? Fallout 3, for instance, has an incredible amount of depth in terms of customization, stats, loot, exploration, all the definable aspects that define an rpg.

If you think people who don't think ME2 is an rpg is due to the shooting then... ???

so, Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer is the best rpg since GTA San Andreas, right?

The ME1 to ME2 thing reminds me of Resident Evil 4.  You had people complaining that it wasn't survival horror anymore, others that were trying to defend it by saying it still was, and at the end of the day it didn't mean jack shit because it is one of the best games ever.

ME2, a game where you play an actual role in the storyline, is not an RPG but FF is an rpg series.

You can split hairs all day long, but no matter which way you look at it, ME2 isn't an RPG. Whether or not that's a bad thing is up for debate, but it's pretty clear ME2 is as much of an RPG as Crackdown is.

Fuck no. That game has rpg depth of a Ratchet and Clank game.
Did you only play ME2 on Normal?  The skills you choose to upgrade on your character and the people you have in your party has a huge effect when playing on Insane where every enemy has health+shields/armor/biotic shields so different abilities and ammos make a huge difference.  You also can only last a second or two in the open before dieing so dumping bullets is usually never a real option.

When I think of an RPG, I think of something that gives me a ton of customization in combat and that requires me to understand the customization system in order to not suck.  If you play ME2 on Insane, you'll be ammo-starved and have to know how to use your abilities.  I don't get how ME1 can be an RPG but not the second game when it's combat felt a lot deeper than the first game.  The first game did have more loot but it didn't really give you more options as far as combat.

Like anyone at "Sony Russia" has been given the inside scoop. And would be allowed to be twatting about it outside of the official PR campaign. If it turns out to be true, this will only have been a coincidence.

In the west, we're informed about our games. IN SOVIET RUSSIA GAME INFORMS ON YOU.
