North Korea fire upon S. Korea (http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/11/23/nkorea.skorea.military.fire/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN1)
at least 16 reported injured, 4 military personnel seriously wounded. South Korea fired several rounds back and warn at stronger retaliation of continued force by north korea
:-\
-
The North Korean fire came as the South's military conducted routine drills in waters off the island, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the North.
God I hope they're not trying to bait them into a full-scale conflict.
-
China will save the day and I'm not kidding.
-
What exactly would North Korea gain by baiting South Korea into a full-scale attack?
-
North Korea is the 14 year old attention whore girl of international politics. This is the equivalent of posting 'You're a slut' on Sth Korea's facebook wall.
-
thought this was about WoW 4.0.3a which drops tomorrow, and will change Azeroth forever
OP is pretty big too i guess

Samsung and professional Starcraft players.

Saber rattling to cut the propagandic teeth of Kim Jong-Un and display that the NK military might policy will continue under the new leadership.
-
M*A*S*H big screen remake directed by Bret Ratner
Ryan Reynolds is Pierce
Dane Cook is Hunnicut
Jason Alexander is Radar
Jessica Alba is Hot Lips
And Chris Tucker as Klinger
-
Nothing will come of this.
-
Does China care about North Korea at all? Can't they just deal with it?

China cares about maintaining a status quo in NK, not much more. A fall of NK would lead to fuck huge refugee streams which China might not be super enthusiastic about receiving, and would also mean a de facto border standoff with SK/US forces, with uncaptured nuclear facilities in the middle.

This. NK could destroy SK pretty quickly, but it would result in their destruction. They're dick waving

Well, we've only got about 12 hours left, so I guess I'll got take a nap for a while.
-
Maybe South Korea should spend less money on cheeseburger pop starts and more on their military so they can finally deal with this shit.
-
They couldn't wait until after I got out of the army? Fuck.

I'm pretty sure South Korea wants to maintain the status quo for the same reasons China does. It's sad but it's the way of the world.

good god
Time for America and Europe to end this situation.

I say they should be sent to North Korea as diplomatic envoys.

You may lose 9 now, Greenman but then you could make North Korea hot like South Korea.

This attack is pretty much the entirety of the news right now in Japan. Lots of footage of the attack sites, updated news that there have been 18 civilians killed and 2 military personnel. The residents of the island fleeing during the night. The deaths prevent this from being just more "we will turn you into a lake of fire" rhetoric, and with the uranium enhancement facilities that are suspected this is, if anything
NK isn't the "attention whore girl" of international politics, but rather the moody jerk who wears all black, sulks in the back of the room, glaring at everyone else without ever saying much, and is rumored to carry a knife. When he does talk, it's insulting, threatening, or otherwise antisocial.
I'm hoping the US doesn't get involved because it'll turn it into a big dick waving contest with China. But it would be nice to see the classroom jock, who is also a major jerk but substantially more physically capable, challenge the would-be toughness of that little prick in the back.
-
My alarm clock is set to NPR, so of course I'm greeted with this as I'm snoozing this morning. Freaking Kim Jung Il.
-
The best Korea better not do it again, or else.
-
that song isn't nearly as annoying as some of their other stuff i've heard
the hook is kinda catchy
-
Nah moody jerks when they strike they do a Columbine.
The US won't start shit. Japan just wants the NK to be fucked over so they don't have a guillotine hanging over their head which is understandable. But they want the US\Sth Korea to do it that way they don't face any of the repercussions. China has money to make it doesn't want a war over NK of all places.

So US vs. NK is like Mupepe vs. Drew?
-
I dunno, is Mupepe a badass? He's more like a sexy mofo. I was picturing Boogie vs. Drew, but Boogie is too polite and would probably defuse the situation with Drew wandering away wishing he'd brought more knives. The status quo would be preserved. I'd rather see N. Korea just get clotheslined, steamrolled, and pinkbellied.

I'd join the army to save S Korea. Screw Afghanistan, I can't even see what I'm saving

Imagine her sexting her husband with that cell phone.
Husband: I want to take your burqa off so I can see your face!
Wife: Oooooh, you're getting me hot! You know you're not allowed to see my face!

Oh so it's like Hulk Hogan vs. Drew? I wasn't thinking big enough.

No, they couldn't. NK could inflict significant damage on Seoul and Incheon, but beyond that no. And they have piss-poor air support--decades-old Soviet aircraft--to defend their missile sites from the thousands of bunker-busters that would be headed their way.
-
Let alone the fun that would ensue if any of the US forces stationed there were killed by N. Korean tomfoolery. We'd send Hulk Hogan over to do that number he did on the Twin Towers, and then sneak Chuck Norris in from behind.
DON'T WORRY KIM JONG IL; HAVING THIS MUCH OF A MAN IN YOU WON'T MAKE YOU GAY.

-
North Korea is firing on them again. Happy Black Friday, bitches.
-
Hmm maybe NK is serious....
-
US is now saying it was a false alarm. SK said they heard artillery fire on the island, but the US is saying nothing was hit.
-
That doesn't mean they aren't firing, it just means they aren't competent.
It could also mean that they're test firing. Or firing with an intent to prompt a response, then claim that they hadn't been firing. America may be the leader in cowboy diplomacy, but N. Korea has the market cornered on "let's appear batshit insane" foreign policy.

Hehe. I still think Kissinger and Nixon top that chart. OG :bow2
-
They're saying now that artillery was fired, but it all landed inside North Korean territory.
-

so either incompetence or propaganda (blaming the shells on S Korea)?

Well NK seems to be spoiling for a fight in anycase. I think they want to draw the US in to create uncertainity and destabilise the US economy further.
-
Well the US and SK are doing some military drills on Sunday. NK warned SK to not do anymore, so Sunday could be the day shit hits the fan.

Too bad they didn't ask around. They'd find out OUR ECONOMY RUNS ON WAR.

Yeah, this is going to be interesting. NK is clearly setting this up as a power thing. If we cancel the drill, their penis gets hard and they feel powerful, and have made giants run screaming from their mighty peen. If we go ahead with the drill, as we should, they start shelling innocents again and feel justified.
-
Kim Jung Il is crazy, gon' blow up the world. Back to you, Ernie.
-
It's an interesting 'game'. The US is stretched, NK has less of a strategic importance to it (lol oil). Europe will not want to help.
South Korea may strike back unilaterally. But then China might step in and broker peace (or more likely tell NK to shut the fuck up) because it's bad for their economy. Though if it does the US begins it's decline as a world power a little bit more rapidly.
On the other hand the economy may just need a war to save it :-\

Well it would be a role change, China actively seeks peace while the US just stands aside and shrugs it shoulders. The US atleast in Asia would lose some of it's charm.
-
so much for the US shrugging it's shoulders:
The U.S. and South Korean military began four days of military drills
The United States is not backing down from North Korean threats over joint military exercises with South Korea off the coast of the Korean peninsula.
Meanwhile, one Republican Senator says China needs to be more of a partner in stopping Pyongyang's antagonism.
The U.S. and South Korean military began four days of military drills off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula.
The exercises come in the wake of the first direct military exchange between North and South Korea since 1953, when an armistice ended the Korean war. North Korea immediately blasted the exercises, warning of quote "consequences" if the operations happen.
In Washington, Republicans and Democrats both said the U.S. must stay the course.
"What we ought to do is what we're doing right now, and that is not backing down in terms of having very legitimate exercises with the south Korean government, which we gave plenty of advance notice of," said Sen. Jon Kyl.
"We need to continue the exercises," said Sen. Claire McCaskill. "We need to take a very strong stand."
China, North Korea's largest trading partner, is calling for a resumption of 6-party talks to try to contain the crisis.
Senator John McCain says China needs to do more to reign in North Korea's aggressive behavior.
"They could bring a North Korean economy to its knees if they wanted to," said McCain.
South Korea said Sunday it would keep the talks request in mind, but had also said it did not believe the time was right for a resumption of those negotiations, which were put on hold in 2008.

"They could bring a North Korean economy to its knees if they wanted to," said McCain.
First they'd have to pick it up from "crawling" so they could then kick it back down to its knees.
I agree with continuing the drills, so that NK doesn't get the idea that they're in control of the situation and can use fear of bogus, illegitimate "reprisals" to make others do what they want.
