Title: Horror flicks: What are the essentials?
Post by: Rman on November 29, 2010, 06:12:49 PM
I've been on a horror kick of late and I'm running out of stuff.  I've seen all the mainstream stuff--all the Freddies--is this really horror, though?-- The Friday the 13ths, Exorcists, Poltergeist.  The indie stuff--Blair Witch, Paranormal Activities.  Torture porn, and on and on.

You gotta be more specific on what you mean by mainstream stuff and what you've seen although I'm assuming you mean stuff like The shining and are now looking for more of the cult stuff.

One quick pick is In the Mouth of Madness. I always think that one is an under-rated modern flick.

I was going to create a horror specific movies you've seen recently thread when I joined evilbore but I thought people wouldn't take too kindly to it since the regular movie thread existed.

I watch a lot of horror flicks. One of my favorite genres since I was a kid. Even the shitty ones.

You should do it.  No one would care, to be honest.  Or we can make this one the horror movie thread.

This one is fine. It can be the catch-all horror thread.

These are all available through Netflix either streaming or on Disc.  This is skewed heavily towards Eurohorror because I think you'll most likely find these more interesting.

Horror is like comedy in that they're both really subjective.  So horror should really be thought of as dark fantasy.

Part 1: streaming.
City of the Living Dead (you'll puke your guts up)
Shockwaves (streaming, kind of goofy.  nazi zombies)
The New York Ripper (the killer's voice is ridiculous but everything else is sublime if really misogynistic)
Burn Witch Burn (low key english fantasy)
scarecrows (low budget, but quite good)
Vampyres (lesbian vampires.  more erotica than actual horror)
Fall of the House of User (The house is the monster!)
Countess Dracula (rip Ingrid Pitt)
Otto: Up with zombies.  (political film masquerading as gay zombie porn)
The Thing with Two Heads (white guy dies and his head is grafted to a big black man.  awesome and campy)
LEt Sleeping Corpses Lie
Lemora: a Child's Tale of Horror (very low key, very atmospheric)
The Vampire Lovers (rip Ingrid Pitt)
The Raven (Corman & Poe)
Tomb of Ligeia (Corman & Poe)

Any Hammer movie with Peter Cushing and/or Christopher Lee.

Also, any Roger Corman or Samuel Z. Arkoff movie starring Vincent Price.

Can't miss:

Halloween
Psycho

Other than that, listen to Eric P. There's a lot of good Dario Argento films out there as well, with the best being Suspiria.
