Title: How different would the world be today if David Lynch directed RoTJ
Post by: FlameOfCallandor on December 25, 2006, 07:55:06 PM
Apperently David Lynch was asked to direct Return of the Jedi back in the early 80s. How different would the world be if he directed it? Mass hysteria in the streets? Cults across america?

We'll never know becuase instead we got that steaming pile of liquidy shot known as Dune.

Dune >>>> RotJ

what DID people hate so much about Dune? Herbert penned the script, after all.

For starters there was no story in the movie. The humans eyes did not turn blue because of the spice and the whole thing was just a mess. Even David Lynch thinks it sucks balls. I will say it was better than Mullholland Drive.

ROTJ and Star Wars in general was a shitty concept so I doubt he would have taken the idea.  If he did, he couldn't do anything anyways.

I personally liked RoTJ, the Jabba Sequences were pretty cool and memorable.  I liked the ending too in the special editions with everyone celebrating...but I still don't know what the big hype around the series is, I watched the DVDs we own like once.

Britney Spears, Larry the Cable Guy, the Ford Explorer, Friends, and the Wii are popular and must therefore be good.

If you can take away the Ewoks and Lucas' fetish with small people saving the universe (OMG don't underestimate the underdog!!), ROTJ was pretty soild for a movie that has to close up alot of storylines.

The opening setting in Jabba's lair was pretty awesome. He decided to bring back Han (which was against Harrison Ford's wishes). The speeder bike scenes were definitely great. Bringing back the Death Star .. not so much. Then the final climax with Darth killing the Emporer was very well done.

I'm not sure what Lynch would have done differently that could have made the movie better (diminish the Ewoks).

---

As far as Dune. It was a mess structurally. When you have read the book 3 times (as a kid) and are still confused for the first 20 minutes of the movie, something is wrong. Visually, what Lynch did was genius. Great casting (Paul .. not so much), art direction was off the hook and nailed the Bene Gessirit, the Sandworms and the bad guys.

When you compare Dune to other sci fi movies of it's time (Krull, anyone?) It's years ahead of it's time. He at least deserves credit for that. He was just hampered by fitting 6 hours worth of material into 2 1/2 hours. Tough job.
