Title: Can we call GOTY 2010 yet?
Post by: The Sceneman on December 02, 2010, 10:29:30 PM
I made this thread earlier in the year. But it's like December now and as far as I can tell all the heavy turds have dropped (GT5, Shat OPs).

What's your GOTY?

I cant actually name 1 game so I've broken it down into a few.

Out of the blockbusters: Red Dead and Mass Effect 2.

Lower budget games: Deadly Premonition and Nier

Downloadable: Castlevania HD, Super Meat Boy

I was making a list of the games I've played from this year and I found that the list was really, really small. I probably won't have a proper GOTY ready until sometime next year.  :-\

I'm confident in my choices.

Halo Reach - good but not quite.

Black Ops - shit

New Vegas - buggy pile of shit, will wait until patched and all the overpriced cocktent is out

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker followed by Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Of the games I've played, Mass Effect 2 and Fallout: New Vegas are locked in a death struggle for #1.

The two exceptional games I played this year were Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2. I can't really say which was better between those two. They were both great.

On the second tier of good games but not at that level were:
Black Ops
Reach
NBA 2k11
Bad Company 2 (Strictly for MP. The campaign was average)
Alan Wake
Mafia 2
Limbo

There were a lot of other games I really liked this year that if I took more than 2 seconds to think about they would fall into that second tier but I'm too lazy to think about it anymore.

Still playing: Lara Croft, and Fallout New Vegas and both of those would also probably fall into that category. AC 2 Brotherhood looks cools as shit as does Need for
Speed Hot Pursuit but I probably won't get around to playing those until next year.

Super Meat Boy and Pac Man Championship edition look cool as shit and the trial demos were great but I haven't purchased either yet so I can't really comment on those two.

The mediocre titles I played with the most media hype behind them were Fable 3, and Splinter Cell Conviction. Both very average games despite the hype.

EDIT: And that turkey FF13. Thanks for reminding me Himuro.

Funniest event of the year has been watching Sony-bots go into full time defense mode for GT 5. Funny shit.

Alpha Protocol should get some kind of award from me for the most times I've started a game this year and then realized I'd rather be hitting my penis with a hammer instead of playing it award.

This is probably the first time in my time as a game fan I don't think I have a clear, established game of the year. I guess if you include Super Mario Galaxy 1, I'd say that was it, but it didn't come out in 2010.

I enjoyed Monkey Island 2: Special Edition for iphone, Game Dev Story for iphone, Megaman 10, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Rising 2, Mass Effect 2, Ys III psp, KH: BBS, and some other games. All of which are pretty good stuff.

It's probably a toss up between SMG2, MI2 and RDR.

I think I'll just go with SMG proper.

Out of all the games I played FF13 was the worst, though. Which doesn't say a lot since I usually enjoy just about any game I buy because I know what I like.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Vanquish
Mass Effect 2
STALKER Call of Pripyat
Just Cause 2
Alpha Protocol
Nier
YS 7
Red Dead Redemption
Mafia 2
Halo Reach

yeah, don't have high standards, but wait!

ass-poo of 2010 :poop
Castlevania Lordzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

lol. I forgot about that turkey. I can add it to my list of mediocre titles.

Not a bad game to be fair. Just incredibly average.

Thinking about it'd I'd probably put Mass Effect 2 ahead of the pack if I were to replay it. I have my pc version discs on me but not my ME1 save file on me.  :-\

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's funny how the "worst" game I played was something so horribly mediocre. So yeah, good year for me.

So from this year, I've played

Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
(halfway through, arrived today) Halo Reach

My GOTY:

:bow Dragon Age Origins :bow2

Not Awakening

Title: Re: Can we call GOTY 2010 yet?

Super Street Fighter 4  :rock

but that aside (because it's essentially an expansion of last year's GOTY), Red Dead Redemption and Alan Wake were my favorites.  Lotta stuff I haven't gotten around to yet, though.

Also: Minecraft, even if it's still technically in alpha.

I put 30 hours into and then I remember I hit the "good" part of the game. And when I realized that was the "good" part and that was as "good" as it was going to get, that was enough for me. I thought for awhile that I would eventually go back to it and finish it, but I quickly realized I have no interest in ever doing that. That series needs an enema.

For me it's between Bayonetta, Xenoblade, Alpha Protocol, Gray Matter, and Vanquish.

For downloadable: either Lara Croft or Super Meat Boy or Shatter.

I'm gonna play a second time soon with all the DLC on PC. I can't wait.

But yeah. RDR and ME 2 had so many memorable moments for me its crazy. A real GOTY contender should almost trick you into believing you are playing the best game of all time and there are moments where both of them achieve that for me.

Sadly I've got a couple of important projects lined up for next year in real life so I probably won't be able to game or post as much next year. Life sucks.  :-\

Vanquish is my GotY without question. SSF4 in second, Bayonetta in third. The rest I'm not too sure about right now, but that's my top three.

My favorites have been:

Retail-

-Super Street Fighter IV (my GOTY, easily)
-Persona 3 Portable
-Phantasy Star Portable 2
-Hokuto Musou
-Sengoku Basara 3
-Mass Effect 2
-Halo Reach
-Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
-Lost Planet 2
-Call Of Duty Black Ops

Downloadable-

-KOF 2002 Unlimited Match
-Pac-Man CE DX
-Afterburner Climax
-NeoGeo Battle Coliseum
-Monday Night Combat

DLC/Expansions-

-Resident Evil 5's Lost In Nightmares and Desperate Escape packs

Bayonetta was a 2009 game for me, so not counting that.  Have not played enough of Peace Walker, Lara Croft GoL, and Vanquish yet.  Have only played the multi in AC Brotherhood since I am playing through ACII first.  Have not played Alan Wake yet.

Would like to play Dragon Age Origins, and am very close to buying the Ultimate Edition on PC since I read it plays pretty well on my netbook.

Did not play Fallout New Vegas since I have barely touched Fallout 3 GOTY Edition.  Am wondering if I should just avoid Bethesda's games since I never seem to play them for very long.  Did this with Morrowind and Oblivion too.

Also have yet to play Borderlands.

Has a slight carryover effect to Dragon 2 Age (not on the level of Mass Effect or anything though) which comes out next year so that may give you some incentive. That was my GOTY last year. Although the Awakenings expansion was meh to me.

I still havent played Vanquish! If I was working I would have snaffled it up by now.

Currently waiting for the bargain bin, thus I am "part of the problem"

Well they are making a bunch of changes to Dragon Age 2 on the console versions to make it more "console friendly" so that could either be good or really really bad. The combat will be completely different for instance between the two versions.

For me, it's more when I finish playing a game and just keep thinking about it for a long time.  I was actually looking at my shelf to see what other 2010 games came out and I saw Bioshock 2.  I may have been harsh on Bioshock 2 when it came out and it wasn't that bad a game, but I didn't remember it at all.  I felt that way about Alan Wake (the first dlc was really good, though) and many other games (heavy rain, god of war 3, enslaved, etc.)

and yes, not having time to play games sucks.  I think I've only played like two or three hours of Black Ops this week because I have all this work to do.  Sucks because I have at least half a dozen *retail* games to play...they stare at me and judge me.  At least the downloadable ones are earlier to forget for now.

There is definitely that element also. Like you can't get the world out of your head. Hell I read the Mass Effect companion novels after I beat ME 2 and I generally make fun of people who read video game novelization material.

There is also that thing where the next few games you play suffer because suddenly you think every game should be that good. Which is never the case of course.

yeah, that's so true  :lol

I remember finishing ME2, looking at some unfinished games, and just thinking that I only wanted to be playing ME2 at that moment.  I even toyed around with replaying Mass Effect 1 as a female, but I ended up just downloading a save that had similar choices that I would have picked.

For my top spot: either Red Dead or Vanquish. I've yet to start deadly premonition :(.                    Runner up: alan wake.             Also, can we have a seperate poll for best downloadable game of the year? Seems unfair to lump them in with all the heavy hitters. Right now, it looks like super meat boy though i did spend about 50 hrs with castlevania hd (Grindan :'( )

I don't know....there's really no clear winner for me this year.  Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout New Vegas (when it's working), and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood were probably the upper tier though.

But there's still some more stuff laying around here that I have to go through like Enslaved, Fable 3 (though the beginning already seems like ass), Vanquish, Deadly Premonition, and yes, GT5.  I put GT5 on my gamefly so I too can experience the thrill of photomode.

For me it's a clear choice: Super Street Fighter 4.

Runner up: Mass Effect 2.

Biggest surprise of the year: RDR. I've never finished a Rockstar game before this.

Honorable mentions: Bayonetta, BlazBlue CC, Strange Journey and Vanquish.

Biggest disspointments: Heavy Rain and GoW3.

Edit: Wow, Robo and Lyte are clearly the only posters with good taste on this board.

Games that gave me testicular cancer would include Castlevania: Bores of Slideshow.

If I would made a Most Shitty Games list, that game would definitely belong there. With Splinter Cell Convition.

Got bored, so I figured I'd rank every 2010 release I've played and beaten/completed:

Vanquish
Super Street Fighter IV
Bayonetta
Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra
BlazBlue Continuum Shift
Death Smiles (NA)
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Nier
Resonance of Fate
Super Meat Boy
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
Monster Hunter Tri
Mafia II
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
Guwange
Dead Rising 2
Perfect Dark XBLA
After Burner Climax
Espgaluda II Black Label
Metro 2033
Mega Man 10
Yakuza 3
God of War 3
Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing
Darksiders
Deadly Premonition
BioShock 2
Final Fantasy XIII
Earthworm Jim HD
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Plants vs. Zombies
Zeno Clash Ultimate Edition
Metroid: Other M
Final Fight: Double Impact
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Metal Slug XX
Alan Wake
Lost Planet 2
NeoGeo Battle Coloseum
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions

Haven't played enough King of Fighters 2002 UM yet to judge it... Same can be said for NeoGeo BC I guess, but I don't like that game very much from what I've played. I want to learn how to play Espgaluda 2 properly, working its scoring system and such, but I keep putting it off in favor of other shooters I enjoy more. Only played Daifukkatsu for five or six hours, but I'd say it's pretty great so far. Could definitely see that climbing my list a little. Doubt it'll surpass Ketsui though. I played a bunch of other games as well, but I didn't like them enough to play through to the end so I won't bother including them. (also I haven't technically beaten (1cc) several of these arcade games, but whatevs... I didn't play through all of Perfect Dark either, but it's still Perfect Dark and I've played it already. Gotta finish that soon.)
[close]

Still got more to play before the year's over though. I'm picking up Death Smiles IIX, Strike Witches, maybe Red Dead, and whatever games Gamefly decides to send me if they send anything at all.

GOTY - Red Dead Redemption

Runner ups:
Civ 5
GoW3
MW2 Stimulus Pack(I know it's an add-on but the maps were fantastic and added a couple more months of enjoyment)
Madden 11
NCAA Football 11

Biggest disapointment - Fallout: NV Beautiful wasteland ruined by lack of compelling story.

Is it possible for FF13 to be overrated? I thought the internet had already placed it alongside MGS4, GTA4, and RE5 as one of the worst games of all time.

MGS4, FF13, and GTA4 were all average. Well, MGS4 was legitimately terrible, but hardly the worst game ever.

But RE5? RE5 is fun as fuck. I will never understand the hate that game gets. Sure most of the bosses aren't too great, but it was easily the best game I played in 2009 alongside Uncharted 2.

I assume people who hate RE5 never gave it a shot in co-op.  The single player is admittedly terrible.

Either way, Dead Space is better.  :smug

It's not too hard. Just give the ai a sniper rifle or or a magnum and it's aces. Pretty damn good ai that covers your ass, especially if you give them a sniper rifle or magnum. ai usefulness wholly depends on what gun you have equipped. With pistols, the ai is more conservative; with sniper rifles they go in offensive mode.

People complain about micromanaging the ai, but I love it. It adds to the "survival" element in that if you don't take care of your partner you're fucked.

I still haven't played RE5 on co-op, I should get RE5 Gold.

Surprised to not see more Just Cause 2 love. I seem to remember the bore really liking that one.

I tried it on a rental and at first it gives a great first impression but then some stupid stuff started to happen so I sent it back. I'll give it another try in the future.

Also Darksiders seemed to be very popular early in the year. Never tried that one.

Not goty material but I really dug Transformers early in the year. The MP especially is kinda interesting although buggy.

I have it up there.

The only thing that pisses me off about the game is that the latest official patch on PC removes the bolopatch.  The bolopatch is the thing that let you use multiple ropes, unbreakable ropes, infinite health/ammo, etc.  Made the game even more awesome.  But the other reason it is so great is because the DLC release of the parachute thrusters made the game even better, especially when you add in mods.  The superman flying mod is so much fun.

I'm surprised more people don't have Dark Void up there

Rock Band 3
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010
Vanquish
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Final Fantasy XIII
Nier
Sengoku Basara 3
Resonance of Fate

Guilty pleasure game of the year:
Another Century's Episode R

Bayonetta was a 2009 game for me, and I haven't played Dragon Quest IX, Gundam Musou 3, Red Dead Redemption or Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood yet.

Yeah, I'm remembering the love for Darksiders. I stopped maybe 1/3 into it when I had trouble opening a single door. I am thinking of re-trying it but haven't managed to generate even an iota of gumption.

But I'm really surprised to see no-one bringing up Just Cause 2. I thought there was even going to be a WWJC2D thread for captured movies; too bad it's impossible to include that feature with the 360 version of the game. Also perhaps too bad that it came out near so many other good games. I hope it sold well enough to keep that team in the black.

Dragon Age gets accolades because it's really good. No, it isn't as good as BG2, but you can probably count the number of RPGs since then that are on one hand and still have enough fingers left over to carry a sack of potatoes.

Ha ha sorry. I should of said bioware achievements or something. I brought the game on steam so i confused it. Which, convenietly, is another reason why pc achievs suck, or rather, does not deliver as congrous a relationship between player and games as a console is able to. there's isn't the consistency the console platform can provide as of yet. Things like every game must give away a certain number cheevs only and so on.

I like Euro RPGs [and RPGs in general], but I'd have to agree. It had some good points [like a lot of quests and map packed with little secret areas to find], but the map was way too small and the combat didn't start to get decent until near the very end. Of the RPGs I've played [50+] it's bottom-tier, despite being a massive improvement over Gothic 3.

Risen's sword combat got decent at the highest level because it unlocked a new rushing attack that sped it up a little bit, but it just felt like too little too late and I'd already started to get bored with it by then. Not a bad game, but it's a weak 7.

I thought the combat was shit but then I expect that from PC centric RPG's that go for "action" in their combat. I just didn't care for it at all. Drakensang is another euro rpg with all the typical bad quirks and low production values of a euro-rpg but at least it actually felt like an rpg to me.

I don't mind the action combat, I loved Two Worlds after all. The problem is that Risen's combat just felt slow and uninteresting. On the other hand, Two World's combat wasn't any deeper but it was done in such a way that it never felt like the combat got in the way of having fun with everything else. And that's really the difference between a mediocre Euro RPG and mediocre Euro RPG that's still really fun to play.

People usually hype "morality" and "moral" choices but I almost always feel they're just arbitrary and pure dressing; prettied up "choices" in the disguise of individuality that rarely ever changes the story. What is the morality like in the witcher? Are there actually difficult choices?

Another great thing about DA! You can do whatever you want due to the respect system!

I prefer the morality system in the Witcher to the one in Dragon Age. The choices are generally divorced in the Witcher from the good and evil schism that most rpgs fall into. I mean don't get me wrong there are some clear good and evil choices in the game, but there are also some great choices where I got so twisted up I couldn't even honestly tell what was evil and what was good anymore. And it doesn't do the good/evil point rewarding scheme that Bioware games tend to fall into where you feel like you need to keep on down whatever path you started. Basically it doesn't thump itself on the chest with the good and evil stuff which is a refreshing change from Bioware. (Even though I like Bioware games and like Mass Effect and Dragon Age)

Without giving too much away my big complaint in the Witcher is that the ending stretch of the game betrays some of the wonderful freedom you were given throughout most of the game and does settle more into a good or evil choice. But the points leading up to that are great imo. They also seem to be working on that problem in the Witcher 2 by offering more endings.

The best thing about The Witcher is that you're character can be a total pimp, sexing up all the ladies.

Combat's okay, kind of weird and takes some time getting used, but better than in Risen.

Drakensang starts slow, the area you start in is really small and not overly interesting, but it gets good once you build a party and head out into the world.

SSF4 is 2010's GOTY, with SF4 being 2009's. 2011 GOTY will most likely be MvC3.

I tend to prefer the Tactics Ogre "kill few to save many or leave hostile yet potentially dangerous rioting civilians alone" or "Hey, you're killing people of MY race in battle. Why should I follow you? You're a horrible leader, I'm leaving this crappy party" type of system more than good vs evil choices. That's what I enjoyed about DA, it felt more like that type morality, which is to say, a blur between being choosing to be a compassionate (often foolish, other times bold) and realistic (often brave, other times cold) leader that falls upon you to make often hard choices that have no real answer.

The Witcher sounds almost like an extension of that from your description.

Two years in a row I was like, "SF4 is GotY, nothing has a chance of topping it." Then Demon's Souls came out. Then this year I was like, "SSF4 is GotY, it's just a battle for second place now." Then Vanquish came out.

But MvC3 will surely be GotY 2011.

The decisions of the Witcher are generally of a personal nature in that you've gotten yourself involved in a situation and now you have to decide which side of the fence you are on or they often involve making judgements of characters between people or situations when neither side is exactly pure. And if you haven't actually done the legwork sometimes you will end up making these choices with not all the facts which is also cool. In other words its a lot more like real life than most moral choices in games where its pretty easy often to determine designer intent about which path they are setting you off on. The decisions also often have delayed effects. Which is a much better way of handling these things as it tends to prevent just picking whatever helps me at the moment by saving and reloading immediately and seeing which choice benefits you best right then and there.

Dragon Age was second best game?  :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
The collective taste of Evilbore members must be shit then.

dragon age pc deserved it

No XBL achievements = inferior version, bottom line.   I wouldn't have explored half the things I did in that game if it wasn't for achievements giving me goals and stuff to do.

smh

Why are you jackoffs ignoring Dead Rising 2? It's Dead Rising 2. Dead Rising 2 is GOTY.

Pretty easily ME2.  To be honest, it might be the best game this gen.

My personal favorite game this gen is Dragon Age Origins, but that's because the setting tickles my nerd prostate in the right way.

I keep dancing between New Vegas and Mass Effect 2, but if I'd had a lot of the technical issues and glitches that most people had it would be ME2 easily.

All right, picked up Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition for PC.  While it does run on my netbook, it's not the smoothest, so I may just wait until I get a better PC.  But I am glad I went with the PC version...that overhead view is very useful.

I'm pretty surprised how good the game looks on low settings.

I had a pretty good year in terms of games. It's the first time I've ever really had trouble picking what my overall favorite was as I enjoyed just about everything I played evenly.

I enjoyed:

- Super Mario Galaxy 2 (wii)
- No More Heroes 2 (wii)
- Sin and Punishment 2 (wii)
- Super Street Fighter IV (ps3)
- Dead Rising 2 (ps3)
- Red Dead Redemption (ps3)
- Monkey Island 2 (iphone)
- Kingdom Hearts BBS (psp)
- Game Dev Story (iphone)
- Ace Attorney Investigations (ds)
- SMT: Strange Journey (ds)
- Ys 7 (psp)
- Ys 3 (psp)
- No Heroes Allowed (psp)
- Cladun (psp)
- Mega Man 10 (psn)
- Mass Effect 2 (pc)

Overall favorite: Mario Galaxy 1 (3 year old game)
Most disappointing: FF13
System I enjoyed the most this year: wii

Thankfully most of my games were cheap for psp, ds, or iphone. I've also kinda stopped by physical copies of psp games if I can. So I'm usually roughly spending 1-3 bucks for an average iphone game or 10-30 for a psp game. I mean, No Heroes Allowed alone costs a mere 10 dollars.

I think this was the year I officially morphed from an occasional console gamer (I really only use my ps3 for netflix) to a 90% handheld gamer.

I'm going to get all three later this month along with Batman: AA, brother.

And yes, I say get it! It can be easy when you learn how to play it but even still it's addictive as fuck. Just the other day I was telling myself,"I gotta get up at 6 am, and it's 2 am and I'm still playing this fucking game."
