Yeah, folks still play. The shadowrun community is fucking hardcore as shit but it's a good game. It's a Vista or 7 game but you can play it with some XP workaround if you want.

Seems there's going to be a $1 game each day until Thursday I think. I'm hoping Lost Planet, Dawn of War 2 or Dirt 2 is part of the sale.

Red Faction would be bad ass for $1 but I bet that's too new.

Would have bought Viva Pinata for $1 instead. I already have Shadowrun from Eel... lol

This seems like a good time to get on my 360 version and try to get the 100 kill achievement against PC players for the 1000/1000. I've played that game for hundreds of hours and I still haven't killed 100 people on PC. :lol

Not sure how the PC version plays (they nerfed mouse aiming iirc), but SR is easily the best multiplayer FPS on consoles since Halo CE.

Quote
Known Issue:  Because previously released Xbox 360 games do not use the new codec automatically, in-game chat with previously release cross-platform games will not work. Titles affected are Shadowrun, Universe at War, Lost Plant: Colonies Edition, and Blazeblue.  GFWL players will hear nothing if Xbox player talks, Xbox players will hear static if PC player talks while in those games.  Fixing this issue requires Title Updates for the Xbox 360 versions of the affected titles. Publishers can choose to issue these at their discretion.

As long as you keep this in mind, $95 cent isn't bad.

The game default to vsync on and limits the frame rate to 30 but if you turn it off you get a crazy high frame rate but introduce tearing.
Title: Re: ShadowRun 95 cents GFWL
Post by: cool breeze on December 04, 2010, 12:17:22 AM
if you have an nvidia card, use d3doverrider and force triple buffering to get rid of tearing.  there is probably something for ati cards or whatever the name was changed to (amd?).

I bought it mostly because splosion man ruined my point balance and these 1 dollar games will help balance it.  It really is an Xbox game from the menus to, uh, pretty much everything.  A lot of the interface just looks silly if you're using a kb/m and it's unnecessarily clunky because of it.  The game itself seems alright I guess.  Playing it made me want to play bioshock 2 multiplayer, which made me want to play counter-strike modded servers.

VP still shows as 19.99

You have to go into the actual GFWL client you download and there you can buy it for the correct price. The webpage store hasn't been updated yet.

Been awhile since I played VP, my garden on the 360 got out of control and then I was scared to go back to it after awhile.
So I just started it up on the PC... still adorable, overwhelming, and hard to put down. Hopefully I'll have a little more luck managing things this time.

I bought VP because I still haven't played my X360 copy and since this has achievements, it saves me the effort of getting up and putting the disc in my X360 if I ever want to play it.  That's worth a buck.

It honestly doesn't look that different.

It is also resolution limited but there is some workaround for that. But I can't find the file you need to edit on my computer.

How is it resolution limited? In order for GFW branding your game has to support resolutions up to 1900x1200.

It doesn't. At least on my machine with my video card and my monitor. Somebody else mentioned the same thing over at GAF. You have to go in and edit some config file but I can't find that file on my computer. So it only goes up to like 1280 x 1024 in the options.

Shadowrun also locks you to 30fps if you want v-sync.

Some weird stuff with these X360 -> official PC ports.

Publishers that release console ports without V-sync, AA, and at least 1680x1050 widescreen need to be shot in the street.

things like this (large pictures so I put them in the spoiler box) really confuses me.  First image is a 4:3 resolution; notice how much more of the gun you see.  Second is 16:10, but they put black borders to make it 16:9...except they're already cropping it down from 4:3.  I don't get it.

That's good, VP is a pretty good looking game when you get everything cranked up.

Anyway, I've played a little bit [about 45 minutes] and I'm enjoying it so far. It's kind of annoying, though, to have all this little, unskipable scenes come up every few seconds when something happens. It feels like there's another one just when I'm in the middle of doing something, forcing me to watch the scene before I can go back to what I was doing. Not really a major thing, I suppose, just annoying. Everything else is decent enough.

it's not weird

MS were trying to make the PC into "Xbox Xtra" (hence the initial $50 charge for GFWL PC) for some fast 'n' dirty port action + microtransactions with spacebux, but when PC players went BWAHAHAHAHAFUCKYA they dropped all that pretty quick

No, you're prolly thinkin' of Animal Crossing.

"You didn't play for a week? Congratulations: COCKROACHES!" Ew.

VP is a very good game, though unless you're using a FAQ the actual combos take a little too much experimentation IMHO.

Disagree on the FAQ thing. The game is pretty open on the requirements to lure animals to your farm. There are a few things that will require a FAQ if you are lazy to figure out, like how to breed certain animals. Unfortunately since this is PC I can't send myself or anyone my awesome leet animals. Must breed Fuzzybears.

When I got 1000 on 360, I left my farm with like 6 Fuzzybears and 6 Chewnicorns worth $100,000 each

Not really. It's far more hardcore, more difficult, and the shooting is much more realistic. Don't expect to whip out VATS and blast a huge group of guys, you'll need to stop or even kneel down and carefully aim each shot. It's also a darker game, with some really creepy parts.

Same. I like the concept of the game and I think I would eventually like it if I stuck with it, but every time I've tried to play it, I've given up out of boredom.

But to be fair I initially had the same issue with Deus Ex and once I got through the initial bit that became one of my favorite games of all time.

I'm mainly remembering the flutterby variations, and there were a couple of them that were two-stage, or it wasn't clear how to mix... I FAQ'd that one hard; I think I even printed it out and checked things off on paper. I was seriously done with flutterbys when I cleared that.

Much better.  If you love MP1, there's no reason not to pick MP2 up for 99 cents.

That said, I find those games pretty much unplayable these days for any more than a couple hours maximum.  The repetitive gameplay makes Alan Wake seem diverse by comparison.

I never played it on the PC but it was a real crap game on the 360. I tried to warn you guys.  :teehee

But at worse you wasted 99 cents so no big deal really.

Shadowrun is a far better game and you can still get matches in that.
Title: Re: Max Payne 2 99 cents GFWL

Shadowrun is also hard as fuck to get into. The folks playing before the sale are monsters. Some of the best shooter players out there.

They may be good but its also just a mechanically hard shooter to pick up. It has a lot of gameplay mechanics in it. It's not just a typical Halo or Call of Duty thing where the mechanics are pretty obvious.
Title: Re: Max Payne 2 99 cents GFWL
Post by: chronovore on December 08, 2010, 09:30:19 PM
Yeah, I've heard Shadowrun was a really clever shooter; it's just sad that the "multiplayer only" turned out to be such a kiss-of-death for the game. I wonder if they'd just had a tacked-on singleplayer campaign, would they have had more success?

Isn't Shadowrun already dead on 360, as-in "the servers are shut down and there is no way to get a match going"? The PC just uses typical, open PC matchmaking then?

I believe the 360 version still works online. In fact PC and 360 players can still play against each other although they can't hear each other anymore because of the audio codec change for the 360 this fall. There are just no dedicated servers for either platform. Both go through the matchmaking process with somebody in the game as host.

I bought STALKER and never played it. Should I even bother with it now? It's like Fallout, yeah?

Not really. It's far more hardcore, more difficult, and the shooting is much more realistic. Don't expect to whip out VATS and blast a huge group of guys, you'll need to stop or even kneel down and carefully aim each shot. It's also a darker game, with some really creepy parts.

I sure am missing something with the shooting. Are there any better guns to find before the first shootout because the pistol you start with suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

It's like an RPG in that respect, early on your guy sucks at shooting and all the guns are really weak, but eventually you'll get some rifles with scopes perfect for pot-shotting guys a few hundred feet away.

Isn't Shadowrun already dead on 360, as-in "the servers are shut down and there is no way to get a match going"? The PC just uses typical, open PC matchmaking then?

PC users can play with 360 users so that would be kinda weird if they shut one side down.

I prolly just misunderstood some news piece a ways back.
