Title: Infinity Blade (iOS)
Post by: bork on December 09, 2010, 12:24:58 AM
It's up on the app store now.

Feels like a medieval version of Punch-Out!!.  You progress towards and up a castle, fighting enemies along the way in one-on-one bouts.    Attacks are done by swiping the screen in different directions, and you can dodge attacks left and right, block, and parry by swiping in the direction of oncoming attacks at the right time.  The simplistic game play works pretty well and allows you to concentrate on the battles rather than fiddling with shitty on-screen virtual d-pads and buttons.  I'm impressed...was expecting nothing more than iPhone eye-candy.

Videos look pretty good.  I still have a shitty first gen touch that's basically irrelevant now.

I should get around to getting an iphone 4, or preferably, the next ipad that's cheaper and a bit smaller.

Seriously. Show this to someone who doesn't know what it is and they'd think it was a 360 game:

that intro fight also runs at like 10 fps on the ipad (the rest of the game has less texture effects/shaders and runs smoother)

The technology behind hit videogames such as “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and “Gears of War 3″ is coming to iPhone and iPad game developers this week, in another sign that mobile gaming is booming on Apple’s platforms.

Quote
Epic Games is planning to release an updated version of its game-development tools, known as the Unreal Development Kit, to the public Thursday. The kit, which is free to download, will include new tools to create high-quality graphics and animations on iOS, effectively simplifying and speeding up the development processes for games. Epic doesn’t charge license fees to tinker with the kit nor to make free games. But, if developers want to sell their apps, they have to pay a $99 licensing fee and 25% royalties after the first $5,000 in sales.

“Apple’s App Store is the most vibrant market for mobile gaming,” said Epic co-founder Mark Rein. “If you’re going to make a game for a mobile device, and you want to make the most money, you’re nuts not to make it for iOS.”

If you've played iOS slasher Infinity Blade as much as us, you've probably spent some of your finger-callous massaging sessions thinking, "Why couldn't I be hacking up the God King in the completely callous-free world of Kinect?"

Believe it or not, developer Chair Entertainment is way ahead of you ... and even ahead of itself, in a sense, according to co-founder Donald Mustard.

"We always have some cool ideas on deck, and kind of the inception of Infinity Blade began as a discussion around: 'If we were going to make a Kinect title, what would we make? What would a Chair Kinect game look like?'," Mustard revealed. "That discussion happened, you know, a year and a half ago. We had this really cool design, and it's not that dissimilar from the game you're playing today; it's just been refined and adapted to the iOS screen, which honestly I think is where the design works the best."

Mustard made clear that Infinity Blade isn't a Kinect game rejiggered for iOS so much as an idea sparked by Microsoft's device that found its home on iOS platforms. That said, Chair isn't closing any doors to Infinity Blade on Xbox 360.

"Yeah," co-founder Geremy Mustard added, "if the Kinect really takes off over the holiday season, who knows?"

Holy crap!  Finally a portable game with better graphics than the PSP or maybe even the PS2.  I kinda regret getting a G2 droid phone instead of an Iphone.

It's pretty simplistic but there's something about it. SO SATISFYING when you hand out a perfect beating. If only it had God of War gore.
