Well, I'm glad we finally get to go to Earth. Show me some fucking gameplay Bioware you shits.

Wait, so this is a prequel? Why else would he be a marine?

I hope they didn't retcon the fact that you're a SPECTRE. It seemed that way in the second game, it was barely mentioned.

My prediction: The council is full of pussies who didn't take Shepard seriously in ME1 or 2 and in ME3 when he tries to get the council races support they pussy out. So you have to get the support of the 'doomed' races you recruited in ME2: the humans, krogans, quarians, even the geth.

Disappointed.  Feels way too soon for ME3. ME2 just came out this year and the major expansions only finished up a few months ago.  Hope it's like the Arkham City was last year and the game is still a few years off.  If it's 2011....I don't see how they can make a huge epic game full of original content in that time.
Title: Re: Mass Effect 3
Post by: Himu on December 10, 2010, 04:31:59 PM
Well, if it comes out at the tail end of 2011, it will have been almost two years since ME2. Remember that ME2 came out in January.

While I hope they take as long as possible and would actually quite like a 3 year dev cycle for ME3, the standard dev cycle for nearly all HD games this gen outside of console exclusives is about 2 years.

I would guess Mass Effect 3 will either drop late Fall of 2011 or March or so of 2012.  BioWare is a fairly huge company so they can bring a lot of resources to bear to create content much how like Ubisoft is able to put a lot of resources and massive teams onto their AC games.
Title: Re: Mass Effect 3
Post by: Bebpo on December 10, 2010, 05:02:00 PM
Well personally I was pretty disappointed by the quality of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.  I use that game as an example that you can't make a polished quality HD game in a year.

Most big games this gen are at least 2 full years apart and that's when they aren't making time intensive DLC for the prior release.  If ME3 is March 2012 or later that's fine.  But fall 2011 would make me a bit iffy.  Especially since this is supposed to be the big final epic entry in the series.  I sure as hell don't want it rushed and to feel like a giant DLC pack ala, ACB.

The page got gutted. It now reads "TBD" and that's it.

Most likely it was a generic placeholder for ME3 that accidentally got uploaded.

Why would fall of 2011 make you iffy? ME2 was done fall of 2009 right? But it was delayed. In any case, Fall 2011 is almost 2 years.

Post by: cool breeze on December 11, 2010, 12:17:40 AM
The only odd thing about Mass Effect 3 in 2011 is that it would be the third big Bioware game of the year.  Dragon Age 2 is March (I think), Star Wars Old Republic sometime, and then Mass Effect 3 in fall (probably).

While I'd like to see Mass Effect 3 go back to being more of an rpg (a good one this time), I don't think there is as much things to fix in Mass Effect 2 compared to Mass Effect 1.  What people mostly have problems with are: 1) story doesn't matter, 2) mining/hacking, 3) not an rpg anymore (invalid complaint).  And other things like music and whatnot.

I thought Mass Effect 1 was a busted game; weak rpg, weak shooter, still enjoyable as a whole.  I don't think bioware getting rid of a lot of the rpg elements was a good thing, I mean, ideally they would have just made them good, but a good shooter > a busted hybrid.  I wasn't playing Mass Effect 2 and thinking "I'm really missing the great loot aka getting an identical gun with a higher number" or "damn, this level would be so much better if I could drive a distinguished mentally-challenged off road vehicle in a big empty square".

FINALLY. They've been holding off on letting you go to Earth for too long.

And why exactly is this upsetting? It'll probalby play like all the other ME games. You travel around the galaxy doing stuff and then come back to Earth to stomp the Geth/Reapers with all your new-found allies in the end-game.

EVERYTHING about Mass Effect is been-there done-that! The whole point of the series is to take all these scifi tropes from the 70's and 80's and finally put them down into a really awesome videogame. And it's really awesome. I'm not really sure what the problem is here. I mean, yeah, they could put it some other random planet somewhere, but why? The ME series has skirted around Earth for two games now, so bringing it to Earth for the finale actually DOES make it something new [at least as far as the series itself is concerned].

If you wanna be disappointed by, you can I suppose, but I just don't really see what the fuss is about.

I guess I got really attached to the story of the first game because it had a lot of unique, interesting things going on. The universe they created had a lot of detail and things that really grounded me in that world. But with ME2 and now 3 by the looks of it, they're just taking a page out of current sci-fi films and putting them in a game, which every game is doing anyways.

It's not like Earth getting attacked by aliens is something that movies and books just started doing recently.

If ME3 is set entirely on Earth and the whole game is concerned completely with the war going on there, then I might be willing to agree. But the trailer pretty much shoots that down. "I hope Sheperd gets here with his allies or all this resistance will be for nothing" or whatever. It's still going to be galaxy-hopping like the other two games, doing quests and picking up new characters and all that. It's not going to suddenly become Mass Effect 3: Resistance, unless I'm just completely off-base here.

I never said it was, but it's not like it's stopped at all. It's still in movies, I'm sick of the same old sci-fi shit. ME1, still derivative in some ways, included sci-fi elements that I hadn't seen in a long time. As you said, stuff from the 70s and 80s. ME2 has shit lifted straight from the Star Wars prequels.

If ME3 is set entirely on Earth and the whole game is concerned completely with the war going on there, then I might be willing to agree. But the trailer pretty much shoots that down. I understand this, but the way ME2 went just makes me skeptical that it'll skew towards a more modern interpretation of science fiction than the awesome retro-futuristic stuff they were doing at first.

I liked it. I like how Shepard isn't even in it except for the cutaway.

But then I'm also a bit of a mass effect fanboy so maybe that had something to do with it.

SIT THE FUCK DOWN
DEY TUK DUR JORBS

I'm excited. Bringing the fight to earth makes sense. The past 2 games' main quest and side missions flat out ignored it, even though it was referenced many times (had to travel to the milky way myself to see if the planet is even there). And of course the Collectors were harvesting humans as per request. However I really doubt ME3 in it's entirety will take place on Earth, but I can see most of the action being there, which presents the second scapegoat for the future dissenters (After MP).

Me? I really don't care. All I know is that if Shepard doesn't get help soon, there won't be an earth left to save.

Humans are massively important to the mass effect universe. They are like the new kids on the block who everybody (including the other races) are afraid of because they are advancing so fast. The games hint at this a little but the books really drill this in.

HEY GUYS.

Don't you understand?

Blowing up Big Ben to smithereens  is FAR more important than destroying the Citadel!

It makes sense in the context of the story. In ME's universe the Citadel has been around for much longer than all of the current Council races, the Reapers have destroyed countless cycles of organic life yet left the Citadel, why destroy it now? Humans are a newly dominant species in the galaxy, and pose as the most obvious threat with Shepard causing hell, and if the Protheans stories are to be believed, they systematically go from planet to planet confirming extinction before moving on, Earth would seem a logical place to start given the events of the games so far.

But wasn't the Citadel more or less the main node without all the other portals couldn't work correctly? (Details are sketchy, it's been a while since my ME1 playthrough. )

So what the hell are the Reapers doing harassing Earth instead of getting a grip on the infrastructure. If they do that they can cleanse the races one after another, if they don't these pesky organics will bond together and maybe stand a one-in-a-billion chance. All they'd need to do is re-engage that protocol that the first one tried to activate. Not a big deal, just all waltz over there and tear shit up, then shut down everything and reprogram the Keepers to lock the station down. After all, they friggen built the damn thing.

I hope for two things:
A) let me raze the earth to kill all Collectors/Reapers as a Renegade choice. If they manage to present that nicely I'll do it, just for the agony it's going to cause my earth-born Paragon Shepard. He's been a major dick to many with his holier-than-thou attitude, and it's not like losing Earth will kill humanity. They're like a damn plague on the universe, colonies everywhere.

B) let my decision to reprogram the heathens be a good one. I want to see them kick ass and join the Council on humanitys side. Their beef with that other race needs to be laid to rest after so long, dammit. It's not like anybody benefits from it.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, I want to know why Legion is using a piece of my armor. The kind of vaguely discomforting answer it gave me when I asked just doesn't suffice. Next up: Machine love interest. Oh the possibilities for hilarity. Moreover, not many can claim to conquer the heart of a trillion interdependent networked programs.

I have a curious relation to the ME franchise. I hate to love it and love to hate it. Will be there on Fall of 2011, day one, for the conclusion. Can't wait.  :D

The Citadel was a one-way portal leading from dark space [where the Reapers are located]. The Reaper in ME1 was supposed to get to the Citadel, close it up, kill off the galactic leadership, then open the Citadel back up and flood colonized space with the other Reapers. Perhaps their reason for bypassing it the second time is that it's defenses have been bumped up since the last time, but Earth has been left more vulnerable as a result [or something to that effect].

It's kind of pointless to speculate, since all we know is that the Reapers are attacking Earth. We don't even know, at the moment, if they're ONLY attacking Earth. It could be the main fleet, with other, smaller fleets causing diversions elsewhere, or it could be one fleet among many and other planets are also being attacked with just as much devastation.

True, there were an ass load of those claw ship thingy's at the end of ME2. They could probably wreck havoc on Earth and any number of other planets at the same time :(

...Ah, it's like in chess. First you strategically position yoru pieces and when the timing's right you strike. They're positioning themselves all over the world using this one signal to synchronize their efforts, and in approximately six hours the signals gonna disappear and the countdown's going to be over...CHECKMATE :o

Hm, speculation is pointless, I'll give you that.

But by god, rodi's right, this is brilliant. We already had the painfully obvious Matrix tie-in for a few seconds in ME2. Attacking that many reapers dead-on would be suicide, so there will be sneakiness involved. Substitute the Mac running Win98 in Independence day with the Geth running, uh, GethOS, and the alien mothership with the Reapers, and I think this could actually be a feasible plot. :o

Shepard will need to smoke a futuristic cigar together with the illusive man as they upload the Geth into the Reapers communication system. It will be awesome.

BRB contacting Bioware for possible story rewrite.

</ME nerd>

From what I remember, the Citadel was important in linking all the universe together to speed up the advance of civilization.  So they might not want to destroy it because it's too valuable.

OTOH, it could be that the Citadel was destroyed/deactivated and that the attack on Earth shown in the trailer is the next phase of the cycle.  Who knows?

Hey guys, what if protheans are humans? Like Adam and Eve were aliens and the came to earth and gave birth to humans then left and their non-earth spawn evolved into protheans? So like, the Reapers are worried that because humans are advancing so fast, they're going to evolve into what the Protheans were and be a major threat?

Didn't it turn out that the Collectors were the broken husks of Protheans whose minds had been utterly destroyed by indoctrination?

I think Green Man is thinking of the Forerunners in Halo.  They supposedly looked human like and spared humanity from being wiped out when they used the Halo array on themselves.

Yes.

There's some short skit (with the sarian doc crewmember I think) about how their brains and other internal organs have been almost completely replaced with bionics and how they can thus only barely be considered alive, which means they can be killed mercilessly.

There's apparently some sort of reference for Prothean DNA, because IIRC he noted that they were extensively bred/gene-therapied to achieve their "new" drone status.

and even then she wasn't really racist, just cautious to trusting aliens too easily. It's funny how all the nerds are all like "she's wacist!" or something when the character in more nuanced than that. Also, notice how they call out Ash for being supposedly racist when Mordin, a fan favorite character, created the genophage. Ash was distrustful of aliens, she didn't outright hate them and even thought they deserved rights. The only alien she didn't like was Liara. I'd say Ash was probably right given the treatment of Shep by the council in both ME1 and 2 and the insane amount of times aliens try to fuck him/her over. Shep is too trusting because Shep is an idiot.

Why do nerds always call Ashley a bigot or a racist? Are they distinguished mentally-challenged?

Essentially in the Paragon path, you steer Ashley's reasonable skepticism into increased tolerance.  "Yes, many Turians are assholes, but..."

In the Renegade path, you steer them towards broader human supremacy.  "I know, right?  Fucking Turians, we need to put them in their place."

* * *

In a way, you kind of do the same with Kaiden, if anyone ever bothered to see romanced, renegade-path Kaiden.  It's the only time he has much personality...

If you take Ashley away on missions you see how tolerant and open-minded the character is too.

Easily among the best characters in that game along with Wrex and Garrus.

I thought Mordin was the best written character in ME2.

He had good writing, yes.  But still.  On my "true to yourself" sort of first playthrough I basically condemned him every chance I could and left him on the ship.  I mean, IIRC, he kind of maybe sort of a little recognized what he did was wrong, after everything, but he would still have done it again.  That's not "I'm a little distrustful of aliens" that's "Ha, ha, made 99.9% of your young stillborn."

I can see that.

Which makes it even more curious why people like Mordin so much, who practically caused genocide to a whole species while people hate Ashley's very legitimate criticisms of Shepherd letting a bunch of random aliens aboard a high-tech alliance ship.

Her background story was interesting, her loyalty mission was fun, and she was cold and profesional until she got some shep loving.

And hey I like Jacob and Grunt too, even if I can see how one can find them boring.

Her hot bod helped. Don't lie! ;)

My opinion, none of the characters got interesting until ME2. All the main characters in ME1 (Ashley, Kaiden, Liara, Garrus, Tali) were all really bland and boring. The only exciting thing was being able to choose your own responses to whatever they were saying. None of them had personalities that tickled until the second game. (Kaiden is still boring)

Post by: Himu on July 05, 2011, 11:44:15 AM
I like to think of Mordin as a very ME1-esque character. A lot of the characters in ME1 are very troubled, sometimes they have interesting shades of grey or flaws. Liara is a naive princess who despite that tries to handle things in a friendly manner which isn't always the best decision, Ashley is distrustful of aliens but at the same is pretty open, Wrex helps contribute to his people's suffering by actively being a merc and even acknowledges this, Garrus uses renegade style police work in light of being an upstanding cop. That's what made  most of the characters in the first game interesting. Tali and Kaidan are exceptions but I could make the case that kaidan is one too, it's just that he's boring as all fuck about it.

Likewise, I find Jack, Mordin and Thane to be in the same category in ME2: really flawed and interesting characters who do questionable acts who try their best despite their intentions.

I like how ME2 characterized Liara.

I hated how they handled Ashley/Kaidan in ME2.

He looks distinguished mentally-challenged. It would be awesome if he was, and the only thing he can say is his own name.

"James Vega? JAMES VEGA!!!!"

There needs to be an game with an insane squad member.  You ask him for supporting fire and he poops in his hand.

4 player co-op multiplayer

Join your friends in the all-out galactic war to take Earth back. The universe of Mass Effect expands with the addition of new co-op multiplayer missions, playable over Xbox Live, PSN and PC internet. Players can choose from a variety of classes and races, form an elite Special Forces squad, and combine their weapons, powers and abilities to devastating effect as they fight together to liberate key territories from enemy control. Success in multi-player will have a direct impact on the outcome of the single player campaign, giving players an alternative method of achieving ultimate victory against the greatest threat mankind – and the entire galaxy – has ever faced.

Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War

As a bonus to the campaign, BioWare is introducing the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, a new way for players to manage and experience the galactic war from multiple fronts, including a new 4-player co-op mode. The key to saving the galaxy is the “Galactic Readiness” level, measured by Commander Shepard’s ability to apply
every possible asset – people, weapons, resources, armies, fleets – in the final battle against the Reapers. Players can impact their game’s Galactic Readiness level in multiple ways via the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, including multiplayer. Other platforms and interfaces will be announced in the coming months. It is important to note that the system is entirely optional and just another way players can have control over your game experience – it is still possible to achieve the optimal, complete ending of the game in Mass Effect 3 through single-player alone.

F.A.Q.

Why include 4 player Co-op multiplayer in Mass Effect 3?

Being able to explore and fight alongside your friends in the Mass Effect universe has always been something we thought would be fun and compelling, and many players have asked for it for a long time as well. Mass Effect 3 is the best place for us to introduce multiplayer through co-op because of the premise of the game – all out galactic war.

Why only 4 player co-op? What not a versus mode?

We have always maintained that we would only add multiplayer into the Mass Effect series if it made sense and did not compromise the power of the single player campaign. Fighting together against a common threat was the multiplayer experience that made the most sense for Mass Effect 3. The way we have designed co-op as a wayto take control of key conflict zones in the galaxy is a natural extension of the premise of Mass Effect 3.

Why did you decide not to include it as a part of the main campaign?

Our priority and focus with Mass Effect 3 has and always will be to deliver a complete and satisfying single player experience.

Does the addition of co-op multiplayer missions impact the scope or quality of the single-player experience?

No. A dedicated team from our recently formed BioWare Montreal studio has been focused on creating the multiplayer game features while the main game continued to be developed by the team in BioWare Edmonton. Both teams are integrated under the same leadership group that produced Mass Effect 1 and 2, led by Casey Hudson. BioWare remains dedicated to delivering one of the most amazing single-player campaigns gamers have ever experienced.

How did developing multiplayer impact the single player game?

BioWare is dedicated and focused on delivering an engaging, fun, and action-packed experience for Mass Effect 3, one that lives up the BioWare standard. To reach that level of quality, last year BioWare opened a studio in Montreal that is home to designers, programmers, engineers, and other developers. Both studios work together as partners, lead by the core Mass Effect team, unified in a single vision. Under the direction of Casey Hudson and other team veterans, both studios make contributions to both the single player and multiplayer modes in Mass Effect 3. Rest assured that no compromises were made to either of these modes in the development of Mass Effect 3.

Which characters can I play in co-op multiplayer? Can I play as Commander Shepard?

Commander Shepard’s part in the war will take place in the single-player campaign, as will that of other beloved characters in the franchise such as Garrus, Ashley, and Liara…these characters do not appear in the multiplayer missions. In multiplayer, players will create custom characters to fight on different and unique fronts in the war. This will include the ability to play as favorites like Turians, Krogans, Asari and more… each with their own unique set of abilities.

What if I don’t like multiplayer – will my experience be negatively impacted?

Mass Effect 3 is a complete, standalone game that will deliver a satisfying story experience, even if you choose not to try multiplayer. The Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system and all of the individual components are meant to complement that amazing game and can be enjoyed on their own or as part of the Galaxy at War experience.

What if I am not good at / do not like multiplayer? Will my readiness rating go down?

ME3 is a story about a war against overwhelming force where the most you can hope for us survival. The more you do to fight that war, the more you can change that story into a more optimistic one. You can reach the highest levels of success in the single player experience alone, but Galaxy at War gives you alternative ways to get there. It’s about choice, and allowing players to find their own ways to stay immersed in the Mass Effect universe.

Will you be adding any additional maps or modes through DLC?

We can’t comment on specifics right now, but can confirm that we are planning on having DLC for Mass Effect 3.

Do save games from ME1 or ME2 impact the co-op multiplayer missions?

No.

Do characters level up in co-op multiplayer? What is the progression system?

Character progression, weapon upgrading and leveling up is present in co-op. We’ll release more information on this topic in the months leading up to launch.

Is there more info about the other platforms of Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War?

We are not going into details about the other components of the Galaxy at War at this time except to say we are designing each to make sense for that platform. Each component will be able to affect a player’s “Galactic Readiness” level in a different way. Again, participation in any or all ME3:GaW elements is entirely optional.

So the multiplayer didn't impact the single player game's process even though having a seperate team working on multi probably ate into the budget which would have otherwise gone entirely to the main single player campaign. :dur Honestly this doesn't seem worth fliailing over if you're not keen on it. Something extra to fuck around with if ya wanna = yay I guess.

At 3:00 of this unboxing video for Battlefield 3 we're shown the card for Mass Effect 3's multiplayer beta, which says it will take place in January. Anyone who buys Battlefield 3 gets into the beta.

The January date was confirmed about 30 minutes ago on the Mass Effect Facebook page. Also, on its forums, BioWare said there "will be multiple opportunities to qualify for early access." The surest is through the Online Pass included in new copies of Battlefield 3.

The game's singleplayer demo will also release at the same time, BioWare said over its Twitter feed. For more information, BioWare has posted a FAQ on its forums here.

Notice of the exact date for the beta will be sent out over Battlefield 3's in-game ticker; you can also sign up for an email notice at masseffect3.com.

Battlefield 3 multiplayer gamers can also go ahead and access a set of N7 Mass Effect 3 dogtags.

My FemShep is a strong, confident, empowered woman. All false messages about her are dissolved in total grace. Her body is a temple, her mind is of the divine, and her is soul is enchanted.
