Title: I want to play a PS2 JRPG.
Post by: archie4208 on January 09, 2011, 09:27:39 PM
I need something to wipe the putrid taste of Mass Effect 2 out of my mouth, so I'm looking for a JRPG (preferably on the PS2) that is challenging, has an interesting battle system and minimizes weeabooness as much as possible.  The only PS2 JRPGs I've played are SMT Nocturne, Disgaea and a few hours of P3.

I'm thinking Valkyrie Profile 2 or FFX-2.  Any other suggestions?

Grandia 3? it is basically the most interesting battle system.  as for story and all that, it's regular anime pap, but it doesn't get in the way of what's good.

actually, Grandia 2 if you never played that on the Dreamcast or PC.

DDS is probably a good choice as it's a lot more straightforward than Dragon Quarter and VP2.

"weeabooness" is a subjective term, and the game is DEFINITELY a j-game, but theres no "animu pap" and the story is pretty twisted and interesting

I just want to do some grindan and have challenging fights.  I can handle some animu, but something to the degree of Disgaea would turn me off.

Dragon Quarter is good but super unforgiving. If you want challenging fights its good for that!

DDS is the more traditional grindan adventure, difficulty is quite gentle also

The best ps2 jrpgs:

DDS1+2 -  traditional rpg crossed with dungeon crawler with awesome dungeons and a great story. It's toned down from Nocturne, but in its way it's very own beast. Features excellent customization options, especially in part 2.

VP2  - if you want an amazing battle system and dungeon design, probably the best overall ps2 rpg if you want to get down to pure design.

BoF5 is a love it or hate it game. It's a dungeon crawler with emphasis on time management before the time runs out or it's game over. Basically it's Majora's Mask and Dead Rising combined with an rpg with a strategy rpg battle system.

Dark Cloud 1 - Flawed, but interesting game. Beat dungeons to net you rewards to build cities and towns, each with their own personal story, including gay neighbors. Better than the overrated Dark Cloud 2.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Great game that allows unlimited amount of customization. Stay away if you're too self conscious of what you play and/or you take your games seriously.

Final Fantasy XII - Open fields, battles without transitions, great battle system, even better boss fights, immense sense of adventure.

Persona 4 - P3 but better. Better story, characters, better dungeons, better fights, better system flow.

Raidou 2 - Underrated gem. This game is pretty much classic SMT with an action rpg system, and yet the action rpg system is actually really fun in this game. Has some of the best alignment choices in the series, and an awesome demon recruitment system. Personally I almost put it above DDS1+2 but below P3/P4/SMTN but a lot of people I talk to personally think it's the best ps2 SMT next to Nocturne because in many ways it's a back to basics approach aside from the combat.

You've already covered SMTN and you should finish P3. :)

Definitely Xenosaga.  It stands up there with the literary masterpieces of Nietzsche.

There's also:

Suikoden III - graphics and animations aren't too hot, but the game has some legitimate difficulty spikes and the story owns my balls.

Suikoden V - long game is long, and easy, but a great traditional rpg and among the funnest on the system.

Dragon Quest VIII - Traditional rpg, not too difficult, and in many ways is very basic but it has charm up the wazoo.

But these are probably too anime.

DQ8 is boooring.  Just play the first two hrs and you'll have 99% of the full experience.

If you're REALLY in the grindan mood, there's a Wizardry game for ps2.

And although it's not technically a jrpg, as it's a card game, Culdcept is pretty own.

Yeah I played a few hours of DQ8.  The slow battles killed all the fun.

The slow battles are definitely the worst part of DQ8 but I still really like it. No other rpg has offered the sense of adventure DQ8 gave me since its release except FF12 and Fallout 3.

I think I'm gonna download and checkout DDS myself. It's one of the many PS2 games I never got around to playing and a JRPG sounds good right now

Get the Grandia 2 port

If you're trying to minimize weeabooness, stay the fuck away from Final Fantasy X-2.

This.

Also you should embrace the embarassing weaboo and play Persona 4

Then you want Grandia 3. The fights never get boring.

You should be banned for this. The PS2 port is terrible.

Digital Devil Saga is pretty awesome, especially if you liked Nocturne. It's easier than that but still rewarding.
Shadow Hearts series might be worth a look too.

You know, I played just about every notable jrpg during the ps2 era released in America and Shadows Hearts: C was the only one I didn't really like aside from Tales of the Abyss. It really did not click with me. Maybe I quit it too early. Aside from Tales of the Abyss it was the only notable ps2 rpg that I *did* quit.

:yuck

How long is Tales of the Abyss anyway? I'm like 40 hours in but at least 10 of those is me letting the console on and doing some other shit :lol I'm in the part where I have to go to a sephirot tree to measure the vibrations or something.

Why would u want a PS2 JRPG... 360 ones are just as good, and you dont have to play in 4:3. Unless you are pirating it like a dirty poor... :lol

Shadow Hearts: Covenant

This is probably my second favorite PS2 RPG, but it's anything but challenging, and there's a lot of weeabooness (collecting gay pr0n trading cards, wacky jappy humor in spades, etc.)

too long! i stopped playing when they have to dodge some sort of super monster on a certain plain and it still feeled like forever

besides some of the game feel ridiculous, for example one of the character has a crippling fear of women that's a pretty funny quirk, but then in a later point it is discovered that's because....!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
a bunch of maid died protecting him from one of the villain, okay not only this turn something that's done for joke sake into something needless dramatic which is stupid but it's twice as stupid because it doesn't make any sense! wouldn't that give you a crippling fear of the villain, or weapons,or murderous people,or dead bodies or heck even maids before womenophobia?
[close]

and the whole game is like that, drama for the sake of drama :yuck
and to think people are sad that the 3DS port isn't going to make it over here *le sigh* :(

Tales of the Abyss has some of the worst story and gameplay pacing I've ever seen in a game, with a god awful story and characters, and boring battle system where you never have to make full use of the game's features. Boring.

That monster on the plains was so stupid, he was blocking a tresure chest so I decided to fight him and ended up defeating him but since the game sucks the characters still ran away from the place as if I had escaped from the fight smh.
