12 nominations for The King's Speech! It won the Producer's Guild Award for Best Picture and whatever wins that usually goes on to win Best Picture, and it's well deserved. Best movie of last year BY FAR.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World got snubbed. Deserves best film editing nomination and win.

No, they started doing 10 last year.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World got snubbed. Deserves best film editing nomination and win.

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

Only thing Scott Pilgrim deserves is a Razzie.

Post by: Himu on January 25, 2011, 09:35:56 AM
The visual gags and everything in the movie is owed to the fantastic editing. It really deserves that nomination considering how far out it is. The only other movie I can think of that is nearly on par with Scott Pilgrim last year, as far as editing goes, is Inception. Telling a story within three, even four layers, few seconds between each other is nothing to scoff at. The entire section where gravity goes nuts and dude is on the walls in particular.

The only place Inception has a chance is technical categories.

Did Despicable Me come out last year? Despicable Me > Toy Story 3

Title: Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations
Post by: Himu on January 25, 2011, 09:51:27 AM
Toy Story 3 was an overrated experience. The only Toy Story that is GREAT is the original, which is a masterpiece.

Despicable Me, on the other hand, was a truly inventive and fun movie. Toy Story 3 felt like "random toys go on adventures part 2" which lacked the original's heart and simplicity. The only thing I got out of it was the beautiful ending.

Still, it was better than Toy Story 2, which is probably the most mind numbingly mediocre Pixar movie I've seen aside from A Bug's Life and Cars.

 :piss 127 Hours :piss2

I think this is the first year I can remember that I've seen a large majority of the best picture nominations beforehand.  The only ones I haven't seen are The King's Speech, which is on the queue for sometime this week, and The Fighter and The Kids Are Alright, which I have little interest in seeing at all.

No because they only nominate directors who deserve it. Not directors that internet forums spooge over.

Why did Anthony Hopkins win Best Actor in a Leading Role for Silence of the Lambs? He only appeared for about 15 minutes.

Best director nom for the fighter but not for Inception, which is arguably the most directed film of the year? Ok Oscars :lol

Anyway I will do a triple backflip in celebration if Geoffrey Rush wins best supporting actor, tho. That's my big hope. Such a perfect, understated performance.

Best Director is basically the top five. If not for there being ten movies now in Best Picture, Inception wouldn't be there. That's just the reality of the matter.

Oh please please please don't let The Kids Are Alright win anything. Seriously, one of the worst movies I've seen in a long while, it's this year's "Juno". It was basically a handjob to super liberal hollywood hipster types but in movie form.

And no Tron Legacy in the music nominations? Blah. "Derezzed" should be Best Original Song.

Hope to see 127 Hours, Inception and The King's Speech take a lot of those awards.

King's Speech Blu-Ray out April 19th. Pre-ordered.

I do believe that Nolan was robbed of a nom even though Inception wasn't quite foty material.  Directing a film like that certainly takes much more skill than directing most of those lifetime movies with high production values that the Academy loves.

The Academy loves visual wankery though.  They just prefer gay visual wankery that's based on costumes and makeup instead of manly CG effects.

I tend to agree with the Academy's choices in the Foreign category.  So many people tell me that Korean films are great but the majority of them are garbage.  It's easy to see why K-flicks get so little respect at the Oscars.

Yep, that is pretty amusing. I wonder what film Korea even submitted this year?

2010: A Barefoot Dream
2009: Mother
2008: Crossing
2007: Secret Sunshine
2006: The King and the Clown
2005: Welcome to Dongmakgol
2004: Tae Guk Gi
2003: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring is actually a fantastic film, but it didn't even get nominated that year.

Also, I'm still smiling after seeing all the fanboys scream bloody murder about The Lives of Others winning out over Pan's Labyrinth.
Title: Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations
Post by: Smooth Groove on January 25, 2011, 01:28:39 PM
I understood the criticisms directed against The Lives of Others for its completely fabricated hero and plot but I don't think that takes away from its message, which is pretty universal to the human experience.  Pan's is pretty good but I don't even think it's as good as the very similar Orphanage.

at least this year there are mostly great movies in the running

last year had crummy stuff like Precious, The Blind Side, and Up. didn't like District 9 that much either.

just kinda random, but the annoying ass dude from District 9 was Murdock in the A-Team.  He was pretty awesome in that and I didn't know it was the same guy.  actually, he was like the only good part of it.

I think the Oscars are pretty stupid but that is LOLworthy.  The fact that Diablo Cody won an Oscar means that the selection process is completely arbitrary.  Although I want to see The King's Speech before the Oscar wanker set starts flooding the theaters to see it.

I can only rewatch certain scenes in T2.  Most of it tends to drag.  I have never tried rewatching True Lies because I saw it for the first time a few months ago.  I prefer Alien over Aliens, don't care much for Aliens in the long run to be honest.

I didn't grow up with most of these movies because before a few years ago I hadn't seen any of them, so there's no nostalgia kick for me either.

Edit: Actually, I forgot the original Terminator.  I own that on blu ray and it's pretty rewatchable too.  I prefer it to T2.

I didn't see it until probably like a year ago.  It's entertaining, but it doesn't do anything for me really.  I think Alien aged better and is a way better movie on every level.

I think they did at some point, but when I saw Alien, it was a movie built around tension and fear and I could still get into it.  Aliens has more action that I don't think holds up today.  It relies less on a good script and more on dated effects and setpieces.

toy story 3, like pretty much every pixar movie that isn't up, is quality but ultimately disposable entertainment. if there's a lingering affection for it, it is not because of the film's inherent depth or technical excellence or resonance, but because it is pleasantly plotted, unchallenging, well-paced eye candy with a canny ability to tweak the nostalgia glands of the former saturday morning set. if pixar has any true, enduring excellence, it is the perfect reliability with which it sells gorgeously-formatted nostalgia to the heirs of a dying empire.

of course, i also think inception is a beautifully shot and paced movie with a consummately simple and stupid plot that never once challenged its viewers, so hey. still, better than than a sequence of pop culture callouts declared genius by today's inconsiderate critics. eh?

Up is as bad, if not worse, than Cars.  I  was hoping that Shark Tale 2 would have been about a rape baby during the holocaust so I could give Up some credit, but other studios are putting better movies than Pixar.

Pixar make very high quality kid's movies. Doesn't mean that they don't have appeal for adults, the stories are simple without necessarily coming across as pandering or overly cliche and therefore can still be enjoyed by someone over the age of 12. They're not movies that challenge or tackle personal or social issues and they're not built on deep, carefully constructed plotlines and characters. They're top-tier disposable entertainment that you can watch, enjoy, and bring up later without feeling overt shame [like most Dreamworks or Adam Sandler movies].

Meh I thought it was one of the best coming of age films I've ever seen. I was 8 when the first Toy Story came out, and still remember the first time I saw it. I played with a shit ton of toys, and had my favorite toys that I loved - many of which I still have in a box under my bed shhhh.

Anyway the first movie was such a perfect description of being a kid to me, and the third did a great job of depicting the end of childhood to me.

Coming of age from my perspective as a 23 year old, where I am in life right now? Yes. I'm not suggesting I've grown up 100%, just that to the point I've grown so far, something like Toy Story 3 or Malena hit home

Toy Story 3 was great but I just don't see how it was that much different than the second.  Everything involving Jesse was like "Weren't you abandoned before getting a new owner? this is old hat for you.  And wait, wasn't Woody already struggling with this stuff for the past two movies?"  The adventure was still great and entertaining.  Everything else was  like they wanted to end Andy's story, but Andy was just a lame dork.

The end is so drawn out like Andy was getting emotionally battered by giving away his toys.  Except it was already established that he: 1) Didn't play with or care about his toys for a long ass time.  They were desperate for his attention at that post.  2) Didn't care when his mom threw them away.  He was like "where are they?" for roughly 2 seconds before going back to being some weird asshole.  And he was going to take Woody to his college dorm? what the fuck?

I would have liked Toy Story 3 more if it WAS depicting the end of childhood, but ultimately only 5 minutes is dedicated to that.

The rest is RANDOM TOYS GO ON ADVENTURES.

Toy Story 1 remains the best Toy Story because of how the toys' story plays out with the humans -- good and bad. In 2 and 3, there are barely any humans around that interact with the characters.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World had the most inventive film editing of any film in 2010.

The entire Patel fight is a great showcase of it.

The timing, the text, the effects. It's comic-y yet in live action. The fact that it was nominated by the American Cinema Editors along with Black Swan, Easy A, The Fighter and The Kids Are Alright as the best edited film in 2010 proves this.

Quality is subjective, but in terms of visual aesthetic and editing, Scott Pilgrim really was unparalleled last year.
