Actually the title says MAX ANARCHY, but I think Maximum sounds better for a thread title!

The main guy from Madworld "Jack" is in the game.  It's probably the sequel.

It's also Platinums first online play game.  Dunno if that just means Versus/Coop or MMO-style.

Multiplayer actually makes more sense because this team can't deep action mechanics like Mikami or Kamiya.  So they can make a shallow brawler and hope the MP makes it fun.

I liked Madworld except for the gameplay which was 4 hours long, shallow and has absolutely zero replayability.  The style and the story (by Matsuno!) were alright.

Madworld's appeal is about finding environmental objects to decorate brain dead enemies with (multipliers) and then murdering them to cash in your points.  I like the first one a lot but there is room for improvement and I don't know why everyone can't give them the benefit of the doubt.

If anyone is bitching it should be me playing the butthurt fanboy.

Thread is old but the game's still not released, and rumors are it won't ever in the States.

Demo is out on Japan PSN/XBLA.  Full English.

Multiplayer is so much fun.  Single player seems cool too.  But multiplayer is so much fun!  I can't think of another multiplayer game to compare it to...maybe Spawn on Dreamcast or something.

And it's a big demo.  There are about six characters to choose from (three from Madworld).

And random events happen in the matches.  Like a crashing plane, missile strikes, bosses appearing, random scrub military troops, zombies, bosses, etc.  In one of the matches there was a cutscene where a random enemy pulls a level and changed the level layout.  Levels are big.  I dive bombed some dude from twenty stories up.

Seems to.  It has cutscenes (I skipped them) and two campaigns: Light and Dark.

The Dark/Jack part in the demo is just a fight again Baron.

The Light/Leo part is a brawler like Streets of Rage.  Missions appear on the map, you run over and hit select to start them.  The side mission in the demo was a standard trial thing, kill 50 dudes in under 5 minutes, and the main mission is a boss fight.  There are perks and I think you level up to unlock them.

It also seems like the "clueless or uncaring about overseas" attitude prevalent in Japan that they could launch the JP demo, and not care or realize that it would steal thunder from the E3 announcement. Sega.

I mean, c'mon... Sega.

Seems pretty confirmed at this point that western releases are not happening unless they release it download only.  There will be no disc release in the west.

The idea I guess is that even though it's fully localized in English already, it will sell so few copies, the cost of simply printing the discs & boxes and manuals will be more than any profit they receive from sales.  Plus X360s minimum 50,000 print run.

Minimum is less than 50K actually, last time I checked. But it's still way above how much this game would sell on the console at retail in the US.

As for the game itself, it's  finished, localized, and ready to go for the English-speaking world. It's just that SEGA gets to make the final decision as to when it is released. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they held it off to explore other venues such as DD like how VF5 is going to be.

I've played everything the demo offers now, and I just cannot over HOW GOOD THIS GAME IS.

You get three parts of the game to try:

Campaign (Black): You play as Jack, the main character from Madworld on Wii and fight a boss battle.  Has some story.

Campaign (White): You play as Leo (who looks a bit like Raiden from MGS and the main character from the shitty game Nanobreaker combined) and run around a portion of a level.  This is free-roaming and there's an endless supply of enemy characters to beat up.  Mission starts points are in various areas around the stage.  I found three; not sure if there's any others.  The last mission is another boss battle.

Multiplayer: This is online (or you can just play offline with bots) and is restricted to team deathmatch, with four players on each side.  And this is where the game is NUTS.  You run around a a ruined city and try to kill as many of the enemy team as possible.  Items to use (like tires and street signs, just like in Madworld), health, and weapons are scattered around.  There's also stage hazards that can occur.  So far I have seen bombers fly by and carpet-bomb the shit out of everything, poison gas that fills up the lower levels of the map (drains your health; you have to run to higher ground), Cthulu (not the Lovecraft monster, but instead a HUGE mech that annihilates everything in its path), runaway vehicles crashing and exploding, and an NPC pulling a level, which detonates a ton of bombs and causes the buildings in the stage to collapse, altering the map!

Controls are tight and allow you to do light and hard attacks, lock onto enemy targets, dodge, block/counter, use a character-specific weapon (which has its own meter; it drains with use and fills up automatically when you stop using it), and like in the campaign, you find weapons and various items to use.  You can also grapple characters who are both standing and already-downed for additional damage.

I think this is the best 3D beat-em-up (done in the more traditional Final Fight or Streets Of Rage vein) that I ever played.  Platinum just nailed it and the multiplayer being good is just the icing on the cake.

Note that you will need to check the options (all in Japanese) to change the language.  You can switch everything, except for the options menu itself, to English.

If not, we can import for PS3 and hope that the 360 version is also region-free.  I would expect the 360 version to be a wasteland online if it's Japan-only, however.

Unless something gets announced at E3, I'm not waiting to see either- I've been playing the shit out of the demo and want the game ASAP!

I hope the US/EU version uses the same online servers as the Japanese one. I'll probably import it, but if I ever want to play it online, I don't want to be stuck in laggy Japanese matches (if anyone's still playing by then).

I was planning on importing, and the half-year delay prompted me to check the usual sites.  Game imports have gotten expensive.  $90 from play asia and $100+ from NCSX.

the demo is absolute boring shite - is the final game an improvement or something?

i've yet to play a Platinum game that wasn't painfully ordinary - is this or P-100 (also looks like standard meh fare) about to break this run of complete overrated boredom?

Will wait until it's bargain binned to 1000 yen (aka next thursday)

You found Vanquish painfully ordinary?

Man, European gamers have weird-ass taste.

vanquish is good/okay - if it was called "BROSHOOT IN METAL: Anvil Of Space Warrior" by EA no one would give a blind twopenny fuck.

I think there's a bit of a jizz loving about Platinum amongst fans - i think if we had some blind taste testing a lot of people would be "But this is bog standard fare!"

but hey - that's haters conjecture - i stand by my opinion : i've yet to be blown away by a platinum game. I appreciate what they are -trying- to do but for Max Anarchy? I simply don't -fucking- get it.

Vanquish is my favorite platinum game even though Bayonetta has more content.  The core combat is just incredibly tight to a level not seen in any other shooter.

yeah, I like Vanquish more than Bayonetta.  Vanquish might be my favorite third person shooter; that might is for whether or not RE4 is considered a third person shooter.

I wish there was like a Vanquish Director's Cut on PC that had all the extra content that Bayonetta has that really fleshes it out as a big meaty game.  The challenge rooms are nice, but it's just not enough and new game+ would have been cool.

Vanquish is quite possibly my favorite game this gen. It's really one of the best and the gameplay is just right. I find it hard to really play other TPS. I really would like another game like it.

Anyway, Sega continues to make no sense. This game is going to bomb, might as well get it out now. Maybe launch at a lower price. While this pretty much saves me money now, I was still looking forward to it. The demo was pretty good.

Nope, they said they'd have something to say about it shortly.

I have zero hype for Max Anarchy right now, but Platinum has a pretty good track record so I'll get it anyway. Vanquish = best TPS of all time, Bayonetta = 2nd best action game this gen, MadWorld = complete shit. 2 out of 3 ain't bad!

Got the game!

Every copy of the first print-run has Bayonetta...the code is on the reverse side of the box cover.

Also:

Quote
For importers

http://maxanarchy.jp/bar/

When you get 500 points in a bar you get a code for free DLC via the store on July 18th

You get points by:
- Opening each update (10 points/update)
- Posting four things in the bottom right box of each update (20 points/update)
- Scrolling through updates and voting on every possible speech bubble (20 points/update)
- Playing the mini-games (max of 30 points for each guess the character game, 50 points for the Big Bull space launcher one)

The DLC is 2 extra modes. Dogfight which appears to be a helicopter battle, and Mad Survival which appears to be the survival horde mode with player character opponents.(Not clear if it's still PvE or becomes a PvP mode)

Time consuming, but could be worth grinding out for the free modes

The DLC is redeemable BY the 18th, so if you're getting the Japanese version, do that crap now.

Played the first stage of the Black Side story mode, where you're Jack.  Similar to the demo, the campaign mode throws you into a large, open level filled with never-ending hordes of baddies to kill.  These guys range from various grunts with different weapons, to mutant monsters, to living bio-weapons and are all shapes and sizes.  Killing them gets you points, and every 100,000 or so unlocks new missions.  The missions take place on the same stage and will have you beating waves of enemies, fighting bosses, escorting a helpless NPC , and picking up a sniper rifle and shooting tons of drones and helicopters down all over the place.

The single player does rank you, but the real meat of the game is all of its multiplayer modes, which I have only been able to play a bit of- we're at a cabin in North Bumblefuck, GA and the connection ain't that great.  I did get to play survival mode (you and up to two others against waves of enemies) and found it pretty intense- after a few easy waves, we fought Bayonetta and several HUGE monsters (with the Bayonetta theme playing!), then some mechs with the MASSIVE Cthulu running around the arena, killing fucking everything.   :lol

Game is awesome- simple to play and get a grasp of and packed with content.  Not the greatest visuals though.  It's 720P and looks a little muddy/blurry.

I completely forgot about this game, just ordered a copy of the 360 version. Hope it still has the Bayonetta code... I doubt they'll need to make more than 1 shipment for the 360 anyway.

You'll get the code....no way the whole first shipment is going to sell out that quick.

The mechanics aren't that deep.  You have light and hard attack buttons, plus a modifier with L2 (uses weapons/abilities).  So it's just basic LLLH, LLLL, HHH, etc. style combos, plus the usual array of jump attacks, a 360 spin (can be used for countering), a grab attack (in front of or behind), running attacks, and the use of various power-ups and weapons you can pick up.  I've gotten off some air combos too.  You can even take out the CPU unit on a helicopter, then jump up and grab and it fly around shooting missiles all over the place!   :lol

I mean it when I say that this game has a classic arcade beat-em-up feel to it.  The controls are tight and responsive and the game is easy to pick up and get right into.

All the characters differ based on strength, speed, and the types of abilities that they have.

The demo doesn't offer the survival mode, BTW- just a sample of the story mode, plus deathmatch and team deathmatch online or offline against the CPU.

If you want the best feel for the basics, do the tutorial then the story mode white side with Leon.  It offers two missions and limits the enemy types just a few of the ones in the retail game, but it definitely should give you a good idea of how everything is set up.  Black side in the demo is just an easy boss fight.  Oh, and one thing not in the demo are the bigger, nastier CPU enemies you fight.  Some of them have to be killed with MK-style finishers (thankfully done with just one button) or they get back up again!

Great game!

I still may get it again since it's only $29.  Remember that the Gamestop pre-order version comes with codes for Bayonetta and two extra multiplayer modes.  One is throwaway, but you get an extra co-op mode in Mad Survival.

hmm, PvP is kinda weak as expected.  Capture the Flag was pretty cool, though hectic.  And the host dropped after he lost, so nobody got XP.  It seems like if you try to search individual game types for online, nothing shows up, and if you choose "All" you get plopped into CTF.  Basically the same bullshit I remember putting up with when I've attempted to play non-Fighting games online...nothing ever works right.  I went a few 1v1 matches with a lvl 50 Japanese player and won 2 rounds each time, with the other 3 being close calls.  All he had on me tech-wise was a couple juggle combos.  Basically, there isn't much skill to this in PvP.  But it's addicting, I played online matches for a good hour last night, so I'll keep going.

Single player campaign is great fun.  Hoping to do some co-op sometime!

Quick Match usually puts you into whatever mode might be open by someone or was just opened by someone who dropped out.  I usually get Team Deathmatch...if you want to select other modes, that's what custom searches are for!

There's not a lot of skill involved, yeah- but remember that you do unlock abilities that can be equipped, and certain ones will give higher-level players an advantage.  Character balance is also a little fucked up in versus games, but manageable.  The characters you unlock last and Bayonetta are pretty much the best ones in the game, although you will see people owning the fuck out of everyone with the bull.  I've also seen people getting tons of kills with Leo.  Jack seems to be the worst.

yeah, i'm not expecting balance or anything.  it's not a super serious competitive game, which makes it even more fun.  I think campaign and co-op are where I'll get my mileage.  It's nice to have a new brawler instead of playing the old ones all the time, as good as they are.

I didn't know you could do it that way. I'll try when I get home, but it sounds like both ways the codes don't work right now.

So I've finnisned the campaign and what can I say other then I liked the game.

It's a pretty simple beat-em up and for a novice thats fine with me. The game feels very inviting in how it basically seems to give you time and que you to do stuff like jungles and stuff. I can't so it's complicated, but it makes getting into the game pretty simple as it's simple to figure out how to do combos. But other then that, everything else just feels smooth and fine. Never had any trouble with movement or camera placement. It's just an easy going and fun beat-em up.

And I liked the single player campaign. One things for sure is that the game never bored me as I believed was possible from the demo. You don't need to grind to get to the next mission as getting points is pretty fast, you can get them all from doing the missions themselves. Plus since points don't carry over from stage to stage, it really makes you not want grind on what you would think is an easy points mission. And a lot of the missions are kind of varied. I mean they are all just kill stuff missions, but some have you do it in very dumb and stupid ways. These variations may not play that well, but they are pretty stupidly entertaining and not really annoying. They help keep the game fresh. Plus the actual boss battles are really fun.

As for the presentation. Hey it looks pretty good to me. I mean it's obviously running on that Platnium Engine and it's not the best looking game ever, but I don't know it just looks solid. The Hong Kong level to me looked pretty damn good. All the characters look good and well look cool. They all have personality and I like how shapely some of the women are, obviously Platinum like's butts.

I won't really be playing a lot of the multi. I tried, but it's just really chaotic and I'm not really good.

Anyway,  it's just a fun simple action game from Japan. It won't rock the world, but it was very solid.

Make sure to play through both sides to get the real ending and the option to play as any character in story mode.

It sounds like you didn't try multiplayer for a long enough period of time- if deathmatch isn't your thing, play Survival and Mad Survival.  3P online co-op against waves of enemies.  It's awesome!

2. This is not running at native res
3. The cutscenes are fucking shitty and I can't skip them because someone at Platinum thinks far too highly of themself

Well yeah of course I did the red side. I'm looking forward to use the other characters on a replay.

As for the multi I did some team deathmatch. I mean it's kind of fun, but I'm not really good at fighters to begin with.

And I think if you press select(at least on PS3) it skips cutscenes. I mean what they are talking about in them is kind of stupid, but I thought they looked pretty good. And some were kind of funny.

Last year I was tearing it up in the demo online.  Now I'm foundering in the campaign on normal mode.  I've both forgotten how to play this and any action game reflexes have atrophied. And this is only a brawler! Rising will be a brutal reawakening.

I can't even remember if there's a parry move.

This.  And the codec parts where the faces animate 1.5x longer than the audio.

For real, I'm not enjoying the campaign much.  I finished black side but it's that same Smash Bros feeling of grinding to get the characters to finally play multiplayer.  Now I gotta do white.  And I didn't realize that unlocking abilities were linked to grinding out in the hub worlds by getting 100 kills in each (times two for each side).  Disappointing on that front.

I don't like this game a whole lot either (I couldn't care less about multiplayer and each character's moveset is too limited for single player to have any lasting appeal), but it's still fairly fun. It's just a tier (or maybe two) below Platinum/Clover's best, and still 5x better than MadWorld.

It isn't though.  There is more to it than it might seem.  I don't play it all that much myself anymore tbh (since the game is like 7-8 months old for me), but there's nothing else like it out on consoles that comes to mind.

Have also had a lot of fun in the co-op survival and mad survival modes.

based on the time I've spent with the demo and campaign, I wouldn't say 'spazzy and shallow' aren't apt descriptions for it.  it's along the lines of power stone or spawn for dreamcast.  I enjoyed those and enjoy this.  disappointed primarily in the dull single player options and some other quirks here and there.

agreed about where it ranks among platinum's other games.  nowhere near the same quality of vanquish (personal favorite), bayonetta, or infinite space.  which leaves madworld, so yeah.

I tried the god of war multiplayer beta and it was similar.  enough that my immediate reaction was "why am I playing this instead of anarchy reigns?"

if you start on black side:
play four levels from black side, then four levels from white side, then the final red side as Jack

if you start on white side:
play four levels from white side, then four levels from black side, then the final red side as Leo

:S
wouldn't it be easier to just have the black side and the white side; 5 levels each instead of 9? if someone wanted to completely complete this game, unlock every level and character, they'll end up watching certain cutscenes four times.  I feel like I'm missing something.

...Or you can play through the game once and play multiplayer.  You can use it to level up quickly and unlock everyone by level 22.  Most of the characters will be unlocked before level 22, too- Gargoyle is the last one.

I love MadWorld, it's one of my favorite games of this past gen. But that shit that I hear about this game has made me weary of buying it. So can someone give me a quick pros and cons so I can decide.

If you liked MadWorld (seriously?), I don't see how you won't like this game.

Pros:

-Solid beat-em-up action.
-Easy to pick up and play.
-Multiple playable characters to unlock.
-Good variety of multiplayer modes.

Cons:

-Not a lot of moves per character.
-Stupid story.
-Multiplayer is online-only.  You can play the CPU but there's no offline split-screen.
-Single player levels are divided into hub worlds.  To unlock missions you have to keep playing optional side-missions which generally involve just beating X number of enemies within a certain amount of time.

The real meat of this game is its multiplayer.  The story mode probably isn't something you'll play more than once, although if you like trying to get points/medals, it can be fun replaying levels as the various characters.

The Bore backlash surprised me a bit, but I had a blast with this game.

I tried to play Madworld and loved the atmosphere/commentary (which is gone in this game), but wasn't a fan of the controls.

I liked Madworld for the visual style, the Matsuno written storyline, and the environmental kills and weapons.  The level's were ok, boss fights were a mixed bag.

Honestly the only cons for Madworld was that it was like 3-4 hours long and had absolutely NO CONTENT or replay value after you finished those 3-4 hours once.  If it had another 6 months to a year in the oven and they'd fleshed out the replay value and added a bit more depth to the combat, it would've been a God Hand like game.

I'll get AR eventually, but from the demo and videos it seems more like a big open areas musou-ish brawler that's just as shallow as Madworld and now lacks the story, the cool black & white visuals, and the environmental kills.  Seems like a downgrade if you don't care about multiplayer or multiple characters.  The game just seems like it was made as a multiplayer game and then they tacked on a single player like adding SP to Quake 3 Arena or Team Fortress 2; which never ends up being a satisfying SP experience.
