Title: Fluidity/Hydroventure is great and you should totally play it
Post by: T-Short on February 08, 2011, 08:32:42 AM
Dusted off my Wii last week because I saw some screenshots of this game and vaguely remembered I had some pointz in the ol' Wiistore account. Grabbed this and was instantly hooked.

It's a puzzle-platformer where you hold your Wiimote sideways and tilt it to tilt the screen to control water. At first you just control plain liquid water but you also unlock the ice and steam states as you progress in the game. The game includes the classic Metroid/Igavania concept of showing you unaccessible areas early on which you eventually reach with new abilities.

Game was devved by Curve Studios, who are also just now releasing Explodemon on PSN. Both these games feature music and sound design by RICHARD FUCKING JACQUES :rock

Even though the puzzles are mostly very easy so far (I'm at the beginning of Chapter 3 of four) the game is just fucking charming and fun, and the bite-size challenge to get the collectables is really addictive.

All in all, probably the best water-based puzzle-platformer ever released for WiiWare. GET IT. 1200 points (which it is worth) or just pirate it, if you're that kind of person Magus.

Is this exclusive to WiiWare, or will there be ports to other systems?

Seems like it's WiiWare only, afaik. Dunno if Nintendo bought this exclusively or if there will be ports later. Right now it seems kind of obviously designed around the Wiimote controls (sans pointing) but I guess there is nothing there that would stop a port.

I've always been interested in this but gotta get points and also "clean out the fridge" first. Been too stuck on XBLA Indies to really pay attention to Wiiware.

Would be better with Sixaxis in that case. it doesn't use pointing at all, just tilting, and the wagglejump would be better off being just a button AS ALWAYS.

I read a developer interview some time back about this.  I got the impression that Nintendo owns the shit outta this, so I wouldn't expect a port to any other system (3DS notwithstanding, but unlikely).

I tried the demo, wasn't my cup of tea, but the presentation and gameplay was good.

I was gonna pick it up tomorrow actually.  I love the americana textbook presentation.  This game wouldn't make sense with move controls, most tilt games work with a horizontal paddle.

you can hold the move wand horizontally just as you would a wii remote, it has all the necessary sensors and such

but yeah, would make more sense with the sixaxis/ds3

tbh, i'd forgotten all about the motion controls in the regular ps3 controller

I feel one of the strengths of the wiimote is being a nes pad on its side, I think sony should have copied that.  I imagine groping the squishy bulb isn't ideal.

i agree, the big stupid move button is a waste of space on it when a d-pad could have served the same purpose

The game wouldn't look substantially different on iphone.  If anything tilt games are much better on wii.  There's no shifting your view of the action.

Hehe bu bu it has a weaker GPU than iphone. Who cares, lamers. Just play the game. Think of it as a retro system and your sensibilities won't be tarnished :'(
