Title: Are ROGs still the best value in the Gaming Laptop arena?
Post by: Rman on February 08, 2011, 04:10:59 PM
Looking to get back into PC gaming after a 10 year hiatus and I can't stand desktops these days.

You should probably wait until Intel relaunches the Sandy Bridge processors because they are not only faster but more power efficient.  It's always a good idea to get a cooler CPU in a gaming laptop.

Is there any reason why you don't want a desktop?  A desktop will give you more bang for the buck and is far less likely to have stability issues.

I haven't kept up with gaming laptops but I know that Asus still makes some of the best, including one that has a 120hz 3D display.

their screens aren't the best, and sometimes their keyboards are assy (mine was), but they are the best bang-for-buck out there as far as gaming laptops go

gaming laptops run hot as fuck, though, so the very first thing you want to do is get yourself a good laptop cooler to set it on

My G73JH has been great so far, but for some reason mine runs hotter than the rest of its line, but not "too hot" to be looked into. How much cooler do these things run with a cooler tray? Plus it'll be hard to find one that supports a 17".

it doesn't drop the temperature considerably, only around 4-5 degrees for mine using a $10 cooler, but it does provide venting and keeps the air moving

mine was smaller than the laptop itself, but the rubber feet of the laptop fit on in fine (for tabletop use)

I'm looking at the G73SW, but I'll wait until the Sandy Vagina Bridge issue is worked out.

Space.  I recently moved to a smaller apartment.

I have a question that's been bugging and it needs to be answered in order for me to continue enjoying my RoG.

As I mentioned in this thread my machine can get hot when playing demanding games, but not to the point of shutting down. I've contacted Asus twice about it and they looked into and decided that there isn't anything faulty that needs fixing or replacing. So I'm asking, if I can run all my games and ignore the relatively high temps, what's the worse that could happen? Crippled game performance? Frying my GPU even though it doesn't overheats and shutdown? that would be ok actually, since they'd acknowledge the problem in that case and do something about it.

It just sucks that I have all these amazing games installed, only to have me being too scared to play anything.

what are the temps?

Between mid 70s and mid 90s depending on the game. Asus did not only fail to reproduce the problem at first but outright called me obsessing over nothing when they did. :-\

When I posted about it on the notebookreview a couple of posters said things along the lines of "that's hardly a problem and it's far from being a case of overheating."

yeah, that's a LITTLE high but well within tolerance. my wife's xps 16 gets up to 100C in titan quest but it's still going strong after she's dropped 300+ hours into it. a cooling pad will suck about 3-7C off it.

:bow That's good to hear! I can finally enjoy sessions that're longer than 30 minutes!

remember to open it up and blow it out every few months to keep the vents clear, too

I thought about doing it, as I'm sure I'll find a dune's worth of sand inside, but wouldn't that void my warranty?

not sure, if the access door to ram/hdd isn't sealed with a security sticker then maybe not

A cooler? Would that be the kind of thing you'd place on a desk top?

I put mine on the desk/table and set it on top, stayed pretty stable.  I guess it depends on the cooler shape.

:hump BUMP :hump

What do people think of these now? The GPU seems the same but the SB models are out. Still the best there is (within reason)?

Also, I know the G73 is 17" and probably a little bulkly with all it's guts, but does it seem excessively heavy/bulky for a modern laptop which even the normal models are getting sleeker.

Here's my current 17" (HP 8710w) which might be failing (my fault), but I like that it's fairly trim for the screensize:

I'm thinking about this one, but is 8 GB of RAM enough?

I'll take your word for it, that lappy is at the top of my list due to the Blu-ray burner.

Only gonna re-up this once 'cause it seems (to me and my limited research) that there's no great hope on the horizon to wait for.

- How do SB CPUs realistically improve game performance with all other things (I might be able to get a rather cheaper pre-SB with the same GPU 460M...

- I always valued the CPU not high on performance/cost wise...but keep in mind I have not idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

cpu ain't that important. a good core-i5 (last gen, say, a 430m) or better will more than suffice.
