Title: Dragon Quest VI ds - Anyone getting?
Post by: Himu on February 09, 2011, 04:20:18 PM: I got it reserved along with TO psp but I don't even know why I'm getting it. It looks like every other DQ and after DQ4, 5, and 9 I'm pretty sure I'm on DQ burnout at this point.

I'm mostly getting it because this is really the only DQ I haven't played. 3 and 7 stand as the ones I haven't beaten (I should really work on that but 7 is so longggggggggggggggggg) aside from this one.

DQ6 is a good game. I liked the adventure, but like DQ9 I hate the job system. It's slightly better in DQ6 than 9 though iirc and unlike 9 which barely had a plot and no party members, 6 has a good plot with lots of cool stories and real party members. But the best part of DQ6 is just the world map. DQ6 is HUGE and unmapping it all and accessing all the locations is a great experience that makes up for any weakness in the battle system.

I think for me, DQ5 PS2 > DQ4 DS > DQ6 DS > DQ8 > > > > > DQ9, but everyone here knows my mehness opinion of DQ9 by now. I hate level 5 a lot. They ruined DQ and will continue to do so as well as putting out their own shitty rpgs as well :(

Also I should note that while DQ6 is HUGE and originally was a 60-90 hour game on SFC, with the sped up modern niceties of the DS versions, you can get the exact same 60-90 hour experience in 30ish hours now. Which is lovely. Why lose 30+ hours of your life unnecessarily.

And saying DQ9 barely had a plot is silly and plain wrong. It had about the same amount of plot and character development as past games. Almost every DQ is about the adventure and not the characters, and if it's about the characters it's often about the NPC characters through a multitude of quests that you happen along the story.

DQ9's stories were mainly meh. It started strong with the ghost black knight arc which was awesome, but then after that it was mainly forgettable mini-stories that didn't live up to past DQs and the main plot was eh. And no, previous DQs all had memorable characters beside your MC who you'd get to know, DQ9 was basically just ghetto navi who sucked and no one else. DQ6's party members are alright, with a few good ones like Teri but they're still way better than a silent MC + silent party members zzz.

Anyhow I know you loved DQ9 Himuro, so I'm not going to argue with you. You liked the game, I thought it was DQ8 minus the awesome visual experience of real proportioned world exploration, the good cast (yangussss), and a decent story. And I already didn't think DQ8 was anything more than a "good" DQ that paled compared to the earlier trilogy.

It'd be nice if DQ10 at least has a 3d wrpg style world like DQ8 to explore around, since the graphics will probably be SD 3d whether it's on Wii or 3DS or PSP or whatever.

Also, I really like a lot of the mini arcs in DQ9. DQ stories are all about the mini arcs to me, and I don't see why DQ9's are so horrid.

That's only because you played the distinguished mentally-challenged cut version.

In the real version, not only do these characters have lots of unique stories (Torneko ftw), but the party talk adds to their personalities. DQ4 has the BEST cast of the DQs I've played (with DQ8 being 2nd best).

I think though, you meant DQ5 and while DQ5 didn't have real character party members outside your family, it had a lot of well developed NPC characters throughout the world and plot, which made up for that. DQV definitely felt like it had the most story and character development of them all. Which is why it's my favorite.

Not a fan of the new battle music though. I dont think it will be hard to find (TRU just down the street had plenty), but I will take it into consideration... lol

edit: Does 6 have Pachisi like 5? I might have to put 5 above... I love Pachisi.

Yeah, am I the only one who thought 9 was a total disappointment? It was way too grindy and the game ran very sluggishly. Wish they just stuck with the 2D sprites from the SFC version in this game but it's still awesome.

I think DQ9 is the most divisive DQ ever. 50% love it, 50% think it was meh

Everybody always makes a big deal out of the multiplayer in 9, but as someone who primarily plays single player games, and lives in the suburbs where the most popular game would be something like The Godfather game, or Jersey Shore: The Game (therefore, not knowing anyone who owns DQ9), I didn't get to focus on it much. I'm not into random dungeons and collecting loot/rare drops either. 9 was lacking a bit on the charm (a few of the quests were interesting but nothing on the level of 4-7), was missing the Casino, and had just plain bad music.

anyway i have unlocked the job system,i made the hero and carver warrior's (so that they can become gladiator) milly and nevan mage's and ashley a priest (so that they can become sage) the HP penalty that you get by becoming a mage is kinda ridiculous,the HP of the magey character were already low but now it's so low they even get one-shot at full health against certain boss >:(

EDIT: the HP penalty for being a magic class was so high,i had to quit being a mage to beat the next boss,seriously what the hell? :lol

anyway i now have a ship and the game has really opened up,it's quite enjoyable,the worst thing i can say about it is that once in a while it has some somewhat hidden event flag (you know stuff like "GO TALK WITH EVERYONE AND THEN TALK TO ME!)

Post by: magus on February 23, 2011, 02:58:27 PM: mastered the first job for everyone,the only decent warrior skill is falcon slash,mage comes with lot of useless fluff too,the only job that seems to have really added is cleric since it comes with zing and midheal,alas you don't learn multiheal until you get to sage >:(

seriously the biggest advantage is that my magey character are now finaly out of the mage job so they can take more than 1 hit before dying!

anyway once again i'm stuck probably because i'm missing one idiotic NPC that's going to make the story go forward ::)
