I downloaded in on the VC (lol yes I paid for ROMS) but man it's fucking hard, but good at the same time. WHAT DID I MISS OUT ON.
Ok are the other ones like this too?
-
Those are the old ones, man. :) It's linear, has levels and shit. The new ones are kinda like that but with Metroid like gameplay. Check out Portrait of Ruin, man!

Play CV 2 SIMONS QUEST AND YOU WILL HATE NIGHTTIME

:lol :lol

You need Drac-X (P.C. engine CD not the awful SNES one) that's the pinnacle of old school Castlevania
For new school or "metroidvania"
SoTN
and the last two gba ones as well as the Ds one will server you well.

To be clear: Portrait of Ruin. Dawn of Sorrow is average fluff.

Not true.
The only problem with his post was recommending HoD.

DoS was disappointing as hell.

Dos was pretty cool, but I think that was because I played that before I played Aria, then I realised that it was a rehash of sorts. Still a solid game. HoD is a good game also. PoR is probably the best portable Castlevania Ive played, although I havent played my copy of CotM yet... Im guessing it wont be as good.
-
I loved DoS, but I guess because I actually beat it, unlike AoS. JULIUS MODE FTW.
And Circle of the Moon was really good.
-
TBH the original Castlevania was the only one I ever cared for. Defeating the Grim Reaper was such a bitch.
Avoid the SNES one at all costs .. complete abortion.
-
I'm playing the SNES one :(.
Why the hate Adam?
-
I loved Super Castlevania, WTF?
-
From what I've played of Super Castlevania on an emulator, it was pretty sweet.
-
SUPER CASTLEVANIA IV FUCKING OWNS.
-
The 1st level has actual real pump-up music
-
IMO Castlevania III, Super Castlevania IV, Dracula X RoB, Bloodlines, SOTN, AoS, and PoR are the best Castlevania games. I liked III more than IV. Do yourself a favor and get a PC-Engine SCD emulator and Rondo Of Blood...it's so awesome!
DoS was also really good, but it felt a bit too much like AoS rehash like others have said. Still worth playing though.
Also regarding storyline, it's kind of like this:
Castlevania III -> Dracula X RoB -> SOTN -> AoS -> DoS
and
Bloodlines -> PoR
-
Castlevania SOTN is definitely the best C game out there. Followed by Dawn of Sorrow, the GBA games and Portrait of Ruins.
The other ones are pretty bad. IMO.
-
Rondo is pretty awesome, I wish they went back to that sort of formula at least one more time. I do like the Metroidvania gameplay style a ton, however; IMO there's more potential there than in Metroid itself, even if it hasn't really seemed that way from the actual games being put out, post-SOTN. Haven't played POR yet though.
-
Oh shit .. sorry guys. I meant Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on the NES.
I kind of assumed that one was on the SNES.
CII was the game I was disappointed in (still beat it).

What's wrong with Aria of Sorrow, it's pretty much just like Dawn of Sorrow

Both are awesome. I just liked DoS a bit more though.
When I said "the gba games" I meant Aria of Sorrow, Harmony of Dissonance and Circle of the Moon. All are amazing, IMO.
NES,SNES, N64 and Ps2 Castlevania's are meh.
-
oh ya, i read it wrong, i probably was SO HIGH
-
The music in Castlevania 4 rocks towards the end...and in the begining, the middle was meh, but oh shit :jam.
Awesome game, will look into Castlevania now. Suggestions? Should I continue the old games and then get a feel for the newish ones? I have a feeling if I jump right into the new ones I won't like going back to the old ones ala Resident Evil 4 to the RE series now.
