Title: Borebros, Help me pick a road trip
Post by: Groogrux on February 22, 2011, 11:23:35 AM
The wife and I are leaving the morning of March 4th and returning by the afternoon of March 6th.  We're leaving from the Lexington, KY area.  We don't want to spend the entire time on the road (6-10 hours driving).

So far, we've thought of going to:

Which of these sounds the best?  What's the got the best attractions?  Any place better to go?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
No Demi, I don't think we'll be driving to Toledo...  :-*

Not a big fan of the South but I had a nice time in Atlanta during the Olympics.

Atlanta, or maybe Chicago.

If I ever went to Chi-town I'd go here of course:

Yeah, we're not really the skiing type.  Fat people + going down mountain on board beneath feet = imminent doom  :lol

Postpone it until March 18th weekend and we can pull a tag team on your wife in Chicago.

lol st louis

only other city in that list i've been to is chicago, which is of course an excellent choice.  more great food than you could ever imagine, tons of good clubs/shows, great areas packed with people that just want to party, etc.  never been bored on a trip up there.

Looks like Chicago may be out now.  The wife has pointed out that it might be nice to not go somewhere colder than where we already are at this time of year...

Alright!  After some planning, some talking, some input from an old friend, and some more input from the wifey; here is the plan:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Richmond,+KY&daddr=182+Lynchburg+Highway,+Lynchburg,+Tennessee+37352.+to:Memphis,+TN&hl=en&geocode=FZH8PwIdAsT5-il_ptZYk_1CiDF5JKPAR7i2yA%3BFeRlGgId-Rfa-inXJ6r-BNFjiDEkKIo9wfALJg%3BFd5WGAIdLPah-ilFl0PqHn7VhzH-thpgFfOT0Q&mra=ls&sll=36.448545,-87.171945&sspn=2.960374,5.817261&ie=UTF8&z=8 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Richmond,+KY&daddr=182+Lynchburg+Highway,+Lynchburg,+Tennessee+37352.+to:Memphis,+TN&hl=en&geocode=FZH8PwIdAsT5-il_ptZYk_1CiDF5JKPAR7i2yA%3BFeRlGgId-Rfa-inXJ6r-BNFjiDEkKIo9wfALJg%3BFd5WGAIdLPah-ilFl0PqHn7VhzH-thpgFfOT0Q&mra=ls&sll=36.448545,-87.171945&sspn=2.960374,5.817261&ie=UTF8&z=8)

Friday, March 4th, Leave Richmond, KY and drive to Lynchburg, TN.  Lynchburg is the home of...

Jack Daniels

The distillery is located in a dry county, so they can't sell us any whiskey.  However, they can (and will) sell us a special edition bottle that just happens to have whiskey in it.   8)

After the tour of the distillery, we're going to drive on over to Memphis and stay until Sunday morning.  While we're there, we'll see and experience some:

However, there will be no:

And along the way, we will be doing some:

Oh, and I plan to get drunk and fuck my wife till she can't walk right no more.  Happy times for me.

Have you ever been to a Bass Pro Shop?  It's easily the manliest store in the world.  I hope I die there one day.

Yep. I've been to a Bass Pro and a Cabela's. I like fishing, but not THAT much.

But it's not just fishing!  There's hunting, camping, golf, archery, and furniture.

The only appealing thing I've ever seen at Bass Pro (and I live less than 5 minutes from one):

I guess I just like it more than most.  I buy my work boots and socks there.  A lot of my camping and fishing gear comes from there.  They have great cookbooks and cooking accessories.  And I plan to decorate my man room (when we move, eventually) in a lot of their stuff.

No, it's busy as hell there all the time, so it's not just you. Usually it's my husband telling me, "Don't ever bring me to this god awful place ever again!" but that day it was me saying it to him. So fucking crowded.

I live by the flagship REI store.

Do they sell food at the Bass Pro stores?  They look interesting from the outside but I've never visited one.

Well ok, but as long as you get me my bobber cooler for the pool. We can go to Texas Roadhouse afterward since it's right next door! Nice little Saturday!
