Title: Drunk Thread: Why does Spanish need to be put on every single thing now?
Post by: Himu on March 07, 2011, 01:21:33 AM
Oh hey, there's a sign board at autozone in Spanish, but I can't find the English one.

How come there's not a board in Chinese? Or French?

Why are being so pc and catering to people who need to learn English anyways?

It's like, if I move to Italy, I should have the foresight to learn Italian before I move, right? Or at least make the attempt.

All other immigrants don't always get catered to in terms of the language barrier when they move here. They fix that problem by learning English.

So why do we have to cater to Spanish speakers? Yeah, yeah, their growing population! So?

I am drunk as hell, right now, sorry.

uhh because there are far more spanish speakers in this country than any other minority language, thus there's a market demand therefore businesses would be fools to ignore it?

Come on, Himu.  You've been to my area of town in Houston and everything on Bellaire is in friggin Chinese/Vietnamese/Whatever.  And the signs that are in English are LOL-worthy.  I saw one the other day for a business that just said "An Insurance Agency"  No name, telephone number, logo or anything else (not in English anyways).  Just "An Insurance Agency"

A lot of American expats actually don't worry about learning the native language of their new home.  I know a guy who lived in Paris for the better part of a decade and couldn't pass a middle school French exam.

and because a lot of people in Europe speak English anyway, making the transition not as hard as moving to say, China.

Man, whatever happened to the intellectually curious Himu, who would plug up his existential void through self-improvement?  "Islam didn't work out, maybe I should learn Spanish!" that guy would say.

Whenever I go to Dearborn I know I'm going to see lots of stuff in Arabic regardless of whether the business is owned/run by people of Arab descent.

It's about selling stuff to as many people as possible, not some attempt to flip the middle finger to red blooded 'murricans. There are few things more smh-worthy than seeing a facebook friend say something like "if I had a business I wouldn't advertise anything in Spanish. Learn English!!" Yea, no wonder you don't have a business

this this a million times THIS. i've lived in switzerland for 4 years now and the amount of anglophones i've come across who speak fluent swiss german or german... well let's say i can count them on one hand.

in my experience with expats here:
- the americans try to learn for about 3 months, then they give up but insist to anyone who asks that they are "still learning"
- the brits don't give a shit, probably because they seem to have a superiority complex compared to the rest of europe
- the canadians fare better here since they are from a country with 2 official languages and most can speak basic french since it is forced upon them in school. still most only speak a few phrases though.
- people from australia are too busy complaining about the weather

I'm fond of this joke:

If you speak three languages, you're trilingual.

If you speak two languages, you're bilingual.

If you speak one language, you're American.
