Title: Unemployment-Bore.
Post by: lordmaji on March 07, 2011, 08:14:28 PM
good god... I make ok money being on unemployment and what not. I'm looking for a good paying job. But this "down" time is killing me. I hate being away from work more then a couple weeks or i tend to start tripping out.

Last week, I got so antsy i just took off and drove. visited a lot of family. but damn. I've been back for a day and I'm already ready to get the hell out and go do something. As of right now, to mellow me out. I drink a beer, I know I wont drive if I do. If I don't I might end up in Utah visiting a cousin I haven't seen since I was a kid. :lol

Ugh.

whats your unemployment adventures?

i spent a lot of time walking in parks to keep myself cool.  i dunno if you know anyone since you just moved back but hanging with friends (at their houses where its free) helps too of course.  setting goals is a good way to keep the days from blending together, but its tough to do much of anything when you dont have money.

and stay off the internet as much as possible!

It will work out. Spring is almost here. Take a shit job while looking for a real job. Time spent working is less time spent spending.

You're a good man.

Speaking as someone who went through a prolonged period of being an unemployed shut-in, I can definitely say that sitting around doing nothing, despite being tempting, is not the way to get out of the rut.  Find a hobby, something to volunteer at, ANYTHING to do really.

.

When I was unemployed I always talked about doing stuff with my free time like learning Photoshop or start lifting weights again but was too lazy to actually do those things.

I haven't been unemployed my whole fucking life, basically. 20 years of serial employment. I'm grateful for that, I guess, but damn, a little bit of unemployment here and there would probably have added some spice to the proceedings...

This shit area isn't really booming with jobs in my industry (and the companies around here are all 2-person operations networking) so I'm launching my own thing instead. Have the paintball fields/store on the side anyway so it's not like I have nothing to do, but having to run your own business because of the local structure of things is annoying.

Volunteer work is an awesome way to stay busy, help society and meet new people from all walks of life.  Yes you're working for free but it has its own benefits.  :)

Check out your local newspapers. A lot of people have abandoned them as resources for finding jobs in favor of online counterparts. And get reacquainted with the fax machine.

As far as recreation and keeping yourself occupied, don't make a habit of making frequent visits to your friends' house as suggested earlier, because the smart/successful ones won't like having someone like you around in their lives a lot.

plus it's so easy to get into because almost any place you go is always looking for volunteers, and the work is usually rewarding.  try it, seriously!
