Title: Sometimes, I swear that people are getting dumber and dumber
Post by: mojovonio on March 10, 2011, 11:12:12 PM
Boycott Gas day.

First thing I thought of when someone sent me a Facebook invite to it was.

"Well, I'd just buy gas the next day." And I'm no economics major, I don't know economics at all. But common sense tells me, that will be the outcome.

And that's what 100% of everyone who participates in this thing will do. So, participating in this thing will produce 0% of results.

But that's not true. I found a thread on Reddit where people were discussing this and seems it'll only affect people who own independent stations who depend on that income.

Are people really this fucking stupid? Apparently the Facebook group has 400,000 people.

If people boycott the use of gas also, then yeah I could see a point in it. It would still just be a drop in an ocean though.

Yeah, I do completely concur that people are mindless lemmings, being drawn to "green" causes that they know next to nothing about.

I remember a year or two ago there was this distinguished mentally-challenged campaign to "turn off your lights between 7-8PM on X date" (can't remember it's 'official' name). - for the noble cause of saving the world.

COMPLETELY POINTLESS, especially here in NZ where 60-70% of our power is generated via Hydroelectric Stations (extremely clean, renewable energy source).

McDonald's jumped on the bandwagon, except they merely turned off their Golden Arches for an hour  ::). Not to mention all the printed materials, posters etc. I saw to promote the cause. It's not like all that printing used a lot of energy and paper eh?! More than leaving a light bulb off for an hour?!

ARGHGG IM PISSED

Boycott Gas Day is pointless. It's now a question of IF you buy gas, but WHEN.

The only way to make an appreciable difference is to REDUCE the amount of gas you use weekly. By getting a car with better gas mileage, carpooling, driving only when necessary, and using public transportation. That's it and that's all. Even if everyone in the whole world didn't buy gas for a single day, it would make not one bit of difference.

At most, you lose leisure travel and errands that are incorporated into other trips on later days. And only, of course, if you're low on gas.

Guess which of these two would have a greater impact:

A. No one buying gas for one day.

B. No companies selling gas for one day.

Can we start a new colony? Maybe under the ocean?

Can't. The oil companies own all of that territory.

At this point, I'd rather live with Big Corporate.

In that case, there are some fascinating excavations happening on the dark side of the moon. Anybody who's anybody is part of that.

they should have national suicide day

remember to fill up on funeral arrangements the day before, and don't opt for cremation because your ashes might impact the air quality

if you and your family are dead, you no longer have the worry and guilt associated with being leeches on the environment, as a bonus your unpreserved corpses will help fertilize and renew the earth's soil

and i will be able to get that bitchin' camaro i have always wanted

if enough people post this as their status we might really be able to make a difference

give a hoot, put a gun barrel in your mouth and shoot

If you DO want to fix the fluctuating oil prices, I strongly believe that regulating the futures market is a step in the right direction so that speculation does not create spikes in prices.

A bit off topic: Facebook groups' numbers don't mean a thing anymore (or more so than before) since people can recruit members from their friend lists without their consent. I don't know why a lot of outlets still take it into consideration as an indicator of any activity.

I don't think the majority of people even know how to adjust their privacy settings to avoid that.

The gas prices are more reason enough that I need to use even more PT. I don't get the appeal of paying almost 4 bucks a gallon when you're going to refill in just a week. Good god, I'd rather be fucked in the ear and dick licked by mupepe than live such a life. Maintenance, gas, accidents, insurance, utilities.

Cars for vacations and getting out of town on the weekend for some fishing trip.

Walking and PT for everything else.

Why the fuck won't America restructure our cities so that we are less car reliant? God fucking dammit, in 2020 or so when the fossil fuels peak and people are paying 6 bucks a fucking gallon for their precious cars to commute to their job is a fucking hour away, I hope I'm able to get to my job with ease of access public transportation and/or walking.

Sometimes I feel like I'd be better off in Yurop.

Is it bad that what I worry about is the day when I'm not able to fill up my gas guzzling muscle cars?  fuck the environment and economic effects.  My poor V-8's :(

this is good in theory, but...there is absolutely no way, barring some catastrophe.

Gas prices/peak oil is certainly one of the leading factors holding me back from buying a badass car.

Probably just keep driving my junker 2000 Cavalier into the ground like a filthy poor and saving up money for other toys and trips 'n shit.

I have a 10 year old Saturn that gets good gas mileage for 106000 miles on it.

I think I said this on GAF but co-workers are starting to bike and one person is running to work.  The guy who ran enjoyed it so much he is now starting to condition himself for a marathon.

I think more people can adjust easier than they think to higher prices.  People just like the laziness of driving into work.  Besides, people believe that there is an inherent right to consume.  Rather than adjusting their travel, carpooling, finding public transportation routes, or biking to work, they'd rather drive and bitch.  Not everyone can do this but there are quite a few that can, probably enough to make a meaningful impact overall.
