I know I'm like four years late on this but I don't care. It takes me a goddamn year to familiarize myself with any application that uses it.
hurr durr less menus is so much better cuz I don't know how to read and my fat fucking ass is too lazy to move my finger the fraction of a millimeter required to click a mouse a couple times
-
And you know, this crap makes me really glad I'm not working some like menial tech support job. I can just imagine the joys of instructing some dimwit over the phone on how to reach a specific function when the only points of reference you have to work with are vague allusions to screen quadrants ("It's kinda upper left but more towards the middle, sir") and a bunch of meaningless icons that all look the same to the untrained eye
Okay I'm done
-
uhhh how would it be any harder to point someone to a UI element than it would with the menus? in fact it should be easier, because the ribbon tabs have named subcategories.
-
omg I KNEW it was you that I saw here praising this
You are a terrible person
Just seems easier to say and remember to be all like edit -> preferences -> blah blah -> blah blah blah rather than trying to play like backwards Pictionary off of these fucked up 16x16 illustrations the dev doodled up in Paint
-
<3 ribbon <3

I like ribbon. I wish we could go back to the time when men could tie back long hair with a piece of ribbon and not look gay.

huh? How is it any different? The commands all have text labels except for some stuff on the Home tab, which have section dialogs with text labels. You can say [tab] -> [section] -> [command], or just alt-n-k or whatever.
I'm not a huge fan of the ribbon, I think it's an improvement over what used to be there but not a huge improvement, so I'm not sure if it was worth pissing old Office users off. But personally I was never a big Office user prior to 2007, so it works for me.

The ribbon is great. Learn to love it n00b.
-
Sorry bro, Ribbon is the future. You are one of those dweebs that prefer WinXP as well I'm guessing. Time to move on.

i'll bet you were lactating as you typed this

lactating man milk in your mom.

I agree the Ribbon sucks terribly if you've learned to be highly productive with the old way. I dealt with it by a bunch of quick access buttons which I use 99% of the time (of course, you're limited to only one row of buttons for god-knows-what reason, but luckily I find that just enough room).
Then I added in ubit menu http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/ for the odd time when my quick access buttons don't have what I need.
The nice thing is you can right-click on most anything in ubit menu and add it to your quick access bar, so it's fairly quick to set up the quick access bar to how you want.
The only time I ever use the Ribbon is to access ASAP Utilities in Excel. Otherwise I just keep the Ribbon minimised.

Yep. I missing having every little button at the top of my excel screen :(

Ribbon is responsible for the first time I've felt truly incompetent in an application in years. There's nothing like having used MS products since Word for DOS, only to find out that the new UI paradigm is so far removed from what they've done for the last ten years that I'm feeling like a n00b every five minutes as productivity SLAMS TO A HALT as I try to figure out anew, how to do what I've known how to do SINCE COLLEGE.
Seriously -- hiding the PRINT function behind the icon for the app? There is not enough SMH.
-
Yeah, Raban is a piece of shit.
no u

if it helps any, they changed the Office Orb back to "File" in 2010.
-
Changed it to "file"? It begins...
I don't think the Ribbon is necessarily bad in principle, especially considering how obscure many, many things in Office have been for years. But MS should have realised all the users who have taken years to figure out the obscurities and rely on Office heavily for productivity.
They obviously had zero interest in transitioning users over so there's going to be heaps who just ignore the change. Shame really, because I'm sure the Ribbon is better in some ways.
And don't get me started on the color incompatibilities between 2007 and 2003. Good lord.
-
I have turned the corner on the ribbon.
Well not the ribbon so much but Office 2010 :heart
We're moving offices next week, which means moving our databases to a new server. I was shitty myself at having to re-link hundreds of pivot tables linked to csv outputs. Started tinkering around in Office 2010 (coming from 2003 :o ), go connection -> properties -> change directory of connection to current directory -> DONE.
Absolutely flawless, everything relinked with the right filters and formatting. Plus there's a button saying "REFRESH ALL", which means my macro for removing ghost items in 2003 is not needed. I am stunned at how awesome it is. I still cant work out how to link new csv's, I keep getting an error saying "that format cannot be used to create a pivot table", but for now I'm overjoyed.
:bow OFFICE 2010 :bow2

ribbon is garbage

I HATE RIBBON
that said, Outlook 2010 is scads better than 2007. they finally upgraded me and I wonder how I did my job in 2007
-
I'm still on the fence with Outlook 2010. Out off Office is in a stupid place, and Sent/Receive and Compose mail are on separate tabs.
-
Ribbon :bow2
-
I continue to circumvent the Ribbon every day and remain uber-productive. 8)
-
How do you circumvent it?
-
lawl I've never used that shit, jumped ship after XP
-
Ribbon is in every fucking folder in Windows 8.
Deal with it, old boritos.

I like the ribbon but I use Google Docs for everything anyways.
:bow File access from any computer without messing with a bunch of stupid USB drives. :bow2

Office + dropbox is lightyears ahead of Google Docs.
-
Or you could use Skydrive.
-
There's a way to get rid of the ribbon, you have to dl it. Works for me.

Not for collaboration. Think I could do my open source thread thing with Office? Lol.
Also it's not like you can install Dropbox on computers that aren't yours, or that Dropbox is 100% fully up to date all the time. Google Docs... just use a browser. Any browser. Doesn't matter. :heartbeat

Yeah, SkyDrive / Office Web Apps recently got a fair amount less wonky than they used to be. They're still kind of wonky though (compared to Google Docs or just in general), but I appreciate having the OneNote (of which I am a giant fanboy) web app.
-
Yeah. I know OneNote has this huge fanbase but I just don't get the appeal. :-\ Kudos if it works great for you though.
Since the redesign I almost just go to Google Docs for fun in my spare time. Such an improvement over the old interface.
