Title: Do you have a living hero?
Post by: The Business on March 27, 2011, 11:23:04 AM: Some might say having a hero at all leads to apotheosis and cults of personality; it could be dangerous. Also, if you ask someone who their hero is and they have an answer at all, usually it's someone who isn't living because posthumously their reputation can be changed more easily to allow hero worship. So, I'd say having a living hero is pretty rare. That said, do you have one?

I've thought about this and come to the conclusion that I do have a living hero and it's Anthony Bourdain. I've read his books, I've watched his TV show, and I admire him in such a way that I think he's my hero. If anyone's unfamiliar, he is a chef/author/TV personality who has done the things I want to do, been to places I want to go, comes up with the same observations and conclusions that I'd like to come to. I find myself in various situations thinking, "What Would Anthony Bourdain Do?"

It may sound a little ridiculous, but it's true. Do any of you have an living heros? If so, who and why?

I don't know about hero, but one of the people I admire the most is my step-father. Just because he cared when he didn't have to, and the fact that he sometimes cares about me and my family more than my mom does.

I don't think I've ever missed a TV appearance or an article, he used to make me uguu every single time. But now that the dream is dead, he's just a constant reminder of one of my all-time low-points :-\

I can't think of someone I consider a hero anymore.

Edit:

I honestly don't see Bourdain as a ridiculous pick, although it's a bit surprising. I generally really like the guy, even though he comes across as a douche sometimes.

I'm surprised no one said Stephen Fry.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people that I don't particularly admire that I DO emulate (people I have worked with, people in the Crossfit/Paleo community etc). 'Coach' Greg Glassman, the top Crossfit dude, appears to be a fat paranoid right-wing alcoholic, but he has a great training system that has affected my life much more directly than Stephen Fry. And there are random bloggers and Internet folks that I know practically nothing about who have had a great practical effect on how I live.

Although Stephen Fry is probably a much finer example of our species, he just hasn't had that much effect on how I live my life.
