Watched it last night. While I was constantly impressed by the art design as well as all the environments, the movie was just not great to me. I suppose if I saw the movie when it came out I'd be more impressed by it. While watching it I was constantly reminded of one of the parts of the Animatrix (the story about the history of the machines) as well as AI and similar science fiction movies. I realize that Blade Runner essentially started all this stuff, but as a movie I wasn't impressed. Sure it was a "good/alright" movie, but it never struck me as being one of the "greatest" movies of all time.
It came on pretty good, but as the movie progressed I got bored. Ford was extremely dull and monotone throughout the entire movie, as if he was just phoning in the preformance; yeah he's monotone in general, but it seemed more blatant to me in this movie. To make matters worse, I was not interested in any of the characters in the movie. The one girl who originally didn't know she was a replicant was interesting, but her entire reaction to the situation seemed pretty weak; obviously as a replicant her emotions were primitive, but I would have expected a bigger responce from her at the hearing of the news. You'd think she'd confront her maker or something.
The story was extremely interesting and good imo, but it dragged on for way too long in certain parts. This was complicated by some rather strange editing. Like for instance, towards the end of the movie Ford is fighting the last replicant after killing its love interet (the female replicant). At one point the replicant breaks Ford's fingers and tells him he's going to count to 3 and then kill him. But once he counts to four there's a scene where the replicant is seen bent over the female replicant's dead body, kissing it slowly. Where did that come from? He had already seen the body previously. Little things like that confused me.
Overall I was pretty disappointed by the movie. From a visual perspective it was brilliant and looked on par if not better than many movies out today, but in terms of the actual movie I was not really grabbed by it. I'll watch it again today though.
7.5/10

You're really going animal with your movie viewing aren't you?

Do you mean anal?
Well I figured such a respected movie deserves a good, critical review. That's why I haven't made a thread about Lady in the Water :lol

What is the significance of the unicorn?

wtf is wrong with you
I meant you're watching a lot of movies.
-
I have no fucking clue. On the back of the box it said something about it bringing up the possibility that Ford's character was a replicant, but I never got that indication.
It was never explored, which made the unicorn even more confusing and meaningless to me

It's the holidays. I have nothing else to do, and my brothers brought a DVD player over. So of course I'm renting movies. I plan on getting some more tonight

Maybe he's flat for a reason.
What is the significance of the unicorn?
Are you trying to test him, or asking?

When he got drunk, he dreamed of a unicorn.
It was explained that replicants drew their dreams and memories from a pool of false ones that the blade runners know about.
Ford's handler leaves an origami unicorn outside of his door at the end.
"You've done a man's job" is a strange comment to make, too. Also from the handler.
-
Interesting. I don't remember him saying "man's job"
-
Well, I'm out of this thread, and I didn't really read PD's review, since I've never watched this entire movie.
-
I'm testing him.
-
Gaff: You've done a man's job, sir. I guess you're through, huh?
Deckard: Finished.
[Gaff throws Deckard his gun]
Gaff: It's too bad she won't live! But then again, who does?

The movie improves on second viewings.

Oh ok.
Hm. Well I suppose that just means Drinky/MAF/Willco will be in here soon telling me how stupid I am :-\
-
I didn't think it was a very good movie either.
-
If he was indeed a replicant that doesn't really make the movie any less boring to me, but like I said I'll watch it again.
I found myself waiting for something to happen.
-
Nothing to feel bad about. You gave an honest opinion about a movie, one which goes against the general consensus. That is better than being a mindless drone agreeing with the majority.

I dont care what you think about movies PD, cause your taste while honest, is honestly stuipid.
Also Sean Young was hot in this movie.

You don't like Thelma and Louise?

Last I checked I had a penis.

I connected with the characters. I usually hate anything that has a hint of feminism but this movie was able to tell a rather feminist story without being too preachy. Two women constantly victimized by men go on a crime spree; how can you not like it?
And fucking Brad Pitt. Damm :-*
