So Mortal Kombat on PS3 outsold the 360 version?
Title: Re: April NPD

Top 10 Individual SKUs include:
-Mortal Kombat (360)
-Portal 2 (360)
-Crysis 2 (360)
-Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (360)
-Michael Jackson: The Experience (360)
-Pokemon Black (NDS)
-SOCOM 4 (PS3)

(MK PS3 missing? lol)

Socom 4 M.I.A. will return in 5-6 months where Sony will announce shipping 5 million units like all their other games.

Sorry but it was funnier when Draft said it. :teehee

Edit: those are 7 of the top 10 SKUs, so there are a few missing I guess. And "include" may suggest that they're not in order, I guess. Who knows.

3DS continues to underwhelm. After selling just under 400,000 units in March, sources tell CNBC that number fell by 50 percent in April.

Isn't the PS3 the platform of choice for real fighting games?

I wish draft would come back :(

It's such a shame that the PS3 is so supply constrained.

Portal 2:

I don't get this one.  The PS3 version is clearly graphically superior, has exclusive Steamworks integration (eventually :teehee), comes with a free copy of the PC game... and it still gets outsold by a significant margin.

Pretty dang funny, though.

Soccer moms have moved onto iPhones, iPads, and Android phones.  The Wiis are forever doomed to gathering dust in their closet, brought out only to entertain their 5 year old nephews.

The mindshare of that franchise is completely on the 360 due to the prior editions and the closer connection traditionally between 360 and PC games.

Re: Portal 2
People need to keep in mind that Xbox 360 owners got The Orange Box first (and a well done port too) and the exclusive Still Alive which still manages to chart in the weekly sales.

PS3 owners only got The Orange Box, late and along with harsh words about the quality of the port. So the added bonus if anything made some 360/PC owners change to the PS3 version, more than attracting new users.

So, in many people's mind Portal is an Xbox 360/PC game.

Valve hated the PS3 before Portal 2. Most of the console fanbase is on 360.

a tsunami of bitter tears

I guess all the sonyers were playing it on their top of the line PCs? But shouldn't they have bought the PS3 version since it includes a Steam version? ???

When Gabe stepped on the stage at E3 and said all that stuff everybody turned delusional and thought the PS 3 version was going to outsell the 360 version. Some franchises indeed tend to get identified as more in line with the userbase of a particular console and Portal is one of those series. Same way that if Left 4 Dead 3 comes out anytime soon its going to sell much better on 360 over PS3.

The same way some fighting games do proportionally better on the Ps3.

Pretty dang simple,  though.

More people own 360s. You ain't gon' run out to Wal-Mart to buy a PS3 to play a better version of Portal.

This only partially explains it. In the Uk for example the user bases are closer and the 360 version still way outsold the PS 3 version.

Something like 54% for 360 to 35% for ps3. the rest being boxed PC.

That unlucky 13% could have something to do with piracy or gift cards that have been pretty heavy on PS3 for the last few months.
There is some gamestop member $100 deal going right now...possible price cut at E3?

Yup May will be the real deal

Not a mention in April NPD PR
Quote
Overall

"New physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories showed notable growth in April versus last year. A 17% increase in unit sales translated into over 20% dollar growth due to higher average retail prices.

“Sales occurring in April resulted in 2% year-to-date dollar growth for new physical sales, reversing the negative trend up until March. All three categories experienced double-digit dollar growth compared to April 2010.

"Easter purchasing occurred in April this year as opposed to March last year. The Easter timing shift could explain about $60 million of the growth, but even accounting for that shift, sales of new physical product realized a notable increase versus last year."

Hardware

"Hardware sales realized the least growth at the category level. Unit sales were up 3%, with the greater dollar sales growth being driven by an increase in average retail price."

"The PS3, PSP and Xbox 360 platforms saw an increase in unit sales versus April 2010. The Xbox 360 platform was the best selling of the month in terms of unit sales, followed by the Nintendo DS."

"April marks the third consecutive month of year-over-year increase in dollar sales for the hardware category."

Software

"April 2011 represents the first month that new physical retail sales of content showed growth in both units and dollars since November of last year."

"The Xbox 360 platform generated the greatest unit sales of new physical content at over 3.5 million units for the month, followed by the Nintendo DS platform. The Nintendo DS, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms all generated greater unit sales of content versus April 2010."

"The best-selling game of the month is Mortal Kombat 2011, which sold just under 900K units in its first month at retail."

"Portal 2 was the second best selling game in April. According to our PC digital download report, the original Portal was the fifth most downloaded game in 2010, and was available for free when Steam launched on Mac. Portal's performance on the PC, coupled with the success of the Orange Box on consoles undoubtedly helped prime the fan base for Portal 2."

"The content slate was stronger this year versus last April. Five games sold more than 250K units in April 2011 as opposed to just two last April."

"Games that would appear in the top ten ranking on a SKU basis for April include "NDS POKEMON BLACK VERSION," and "PS3 SOCOM 4: U.S. NAVY SEALS." If sales of the SOCOM Move accessory bundle were combined with software sales, this game would have ranked in the top ten titles as well."

Accessories

"On a year-to-date basis, video games accessories realized the greatest year-over-year percentage increase of all categories. The best-selling accessory item in April was the Xbox 360 Live 1600 Points Game Card."

"Sony's SOCOM 4: Full Deployment Bundle, which included the Sharpshooter as well as the Move, was the top new accessory release."

May could be really brutal for Sony,Wii will get some price cut bump.

Sony could dip below 150k in May. Maybe a 100?

May will be 4 week NPD month,i think.Anything is possible, but at this point watching hardware is like watching grass grow...boring

Buying another console is pretty big financial step, obviously trade in helps but there is one another thing...friends list,do they have 360?If not will they do the same?

Software on the other hand, that could be interesting.PSN down affects every software buying PS3 owner, people could just go into "Wait" mode and that is not good because people tend to move on quickly.

Test of PSN importance and popularity and if nothing happens nobody cares then.

Multiplat games on PS3 are going to be fucking slaughtered for May.  Frankly I think that's where we'll be seeing the biggest effect (well PSN too), and it's likely going to stick for a while.  Sad because PS3 multiplat games were finally starting to climb out of the pathetic depths they were sitting in for so long.  Easy come easy go.

I'm buying LA Noir next week on PS3.  Probably the first multiplat game I've bought for the system since the original Dead Space.

Tiger Woods has got to be way up over last year too.  And I'm continually surprised by how well those Lego games do, especially since they're all the fucking same every time.  Its like the American Dynasty Warriors, will the Lego Pirates game chart the same, why the hell not?
