Target stores have accidentally released the game early and for $30.  The price tag says "online only price" and it's stacked in the clearance area (not with all the other PS3 games).

Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread

probably about 15 hrs. i got about 285 shards and did 50 side missions when i beat it.

also, getting all the shards is a lot easier since after you beat 60 side missions, you get a powerup that shows you the nearest shard no matter where you are

Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread
Post by: cool breeze on June 03, 2011, 09:09:45 PM
do you get the shield at all?

I'm fairly early (my save says 9 or 10) and I've just been collecting shards and saving people.  I'm playing on hard and enemies fuck me up because I'm impatient; I power bomb a group of them, or melee, or shoot them, but they take so much damage while I get downed by all the bullets and explosives they spam.  When I keep my distance for missions, it's actually pretty easy.

The only thing I'm really down on so far is the music.  First game has a great soundtrack and was part of why I liked it so much.  Did Amon Tobin even work on this one?
Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread
Post by: Wario64 on June 03, 2011, 09:19:59 PM
ice shield? nope

amon tobin didn't score it, some other guys did. i forgot who but if you must know, the soundtrack is on the psn store and lists the credits in the description

i thought the game was easier than the first one. in the first one, it seemed like enemies would attack the shit out of you in the open world, not so much in this one

I don't know what an ice shield is.  I'm talking about the one from the first game, where you held R2 (I think) and brought up a little electric shield.  and I agree, the game is easier.  The better melee just makes me want to get up close, but if you do, enemies take you down quick.  If you keep your distance, or just don't be stupid and rush in, it's pretty easy.  I just have the urge to rush in and smash people.
Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread
Post by: Wario64 on June 03, 2011, 09:30:35 PM
im not sure if that shield is in the game. i know there's an ice shield but i never bought it cause i didnt need it
melee gets easier when you get the combo power thing, 1 hit on a guy and you can do your finishing move (triangle) right away

Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread
Post by: cool breeze on June 04, 2011, 12:08:33 AM
I haven't been following this, why does Cole have a different voice

They redesigned Cole and wanted a new voice to reflect the redesign. The goal was to make him a lighter character instead of the brooding ass he was in the original.

People complained and now there's this horrible mishmash of old Cole and new Cole. Hopefully the redesign skin in in the game and an option from the beginning.

This is incorrect.  They wanted to do motion capture and voice capture from the same actor (similar to how ND makes Nolan North run around in a mo-cap suit).  The original actor was unavailable, so they got a new guy.  If you played the first game, you may recall the N64-era animation in some scenes.

Some changes were made to the character but the voice actor change is unrelated.  So far, Cole isn't really different given the circumstances.  The major change was Cole's look, which was to appeal to a broader group, and the negative reaction convinced them to return to the original design.

yes

I finished it earlier today as Good Cole on Hard.  Won't spoil anything yet.  But I really liked it.  Some changes from Infamous 1 I wasn't a fan of, but for the most part, still awesome and better in a lot of ways.  Some powers you get later in the game are amazing because sucker punch really gets what's good about their game.  I'll just list the slight disappointments:

-Music in first game was better.  Both for original and licensed tracks.

-Liked the story/tone/etc of Infamous 1 more.  It wasn't good, but it was cheesy, young adult cartoon or comic book-y.  Characters, plot, and even the dead drop aren't as fun.  This is more like a comic book movie, if that makes sense.  It extends to the gameplay because of the enemies and bosses you fight.  And personally I was hoping they'd go more for a comic aesthetic for infamous 2.  Stylish cel shading and all that  Instead it's a realistic style, which is fine, I just would have preferred it the other way.  On the whole, the graphics are a huge improvement.

-The camera is too tight.  The camera in infamous 1 was at a good distance, but infamous 2 zooms it in and it can be disorienting.  That plus the stagger animations and the darkened screen when losing health and occasionally it feels like you can't see shit.  You're getting attacked from all around and playing as a mobile character.  The camera should be pulled back to support that.

Better for sure.  There are just somethings about Infamous 1 I liked more.  But that was my favorite PS3 game and this probably is now, so, yeah.

One odd thing is how the structure is exactly like the first game.  It doesn't really feel like a sequel; it's like another attempt at making Infamous.  I'm awful at describing these things.  I made a ZoE1 to ZoE2 comparison before and that's what it reminds me of.

regarding the endings, I did get pissed when
spoiler (click to show/hide)
they had The Beast talk to Cole.  That's when I knew they were gonna be lame about it.  All of the story, characters and enemies are worse than the first game.  I straight up disliked it all in Infamous 2.

Infamous 1 ended with Cole saying he'd rosebud The Beast.  Infamous 2...you talk to him, and there is like a stupid ethical choice, and they try to justify his actions and shit.  Same with the white power guy.  I liked the baddies in Infamous 1 because it was like a cripple that controls machines, some homeless broad and Kessler as this super villain you wanted to defeat.  Infamous 2 has a dumb mutant hick and a pussified Beast and one of the two dumb women that are dumb and stupid.  I wanted proper bad guys to murder.
[close]

Still liked it a lot, better than Infamous 1 in a lot of ways, but it's disappointing too.  Also, you feel really weak in this game.  I thought it was because I was playing on hard, but replaying it as Evil/Easy, you still feel weak.  Enemies soak up damage and you can die in one RPG hit.  Infamous 1 made you so overpowered and it was fun.

And as a general rule, mutants suck as enemies in games like this.  Why Infamous 2, Crackdown 2, and Prototype use them is confusing.  They are not fun to fight.

also, evil players get hosed this time.  Good powers are way better.

just got my ice powers and got to the second city. game gets so much better. the enemies you fight are fun and the ice powers are great. especially the one that throws you up into the air. that + improved static thrusters = awesome traversal. plus this new area is really cool. it's basically a bunch of flooded slums and it actually makes water a thing to think about because you need to be mindful over where you are jumping.

Probably the same goofballs that complained that the fast cars only show up on Shoreside Vale in GTA3.

The progression has been handled really well from my perspective. Considering I'm the type who avoids story progression missions until I just can't stand any more side missions, unlocking actual abilities has made me anxious to get on with them early, and then use them during the territory unlock missions.

There's just a lot of smart stuff going on in inFamous. I'm sad that I waited this long to play it.

Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread

the traversal is still my favorite part in infamous 2.  by the end of infamous 1, you could move around the city incredibly fast but it still felt like you were doing something (unlike prototype).  infamous 2 makes traversal even better without losing that feeling.

part of why I think the game is disappointing, but still better than the first, is how Cole never feels overpowered in combat.  I didn't like that it pulls a god of war/metroid thing at the beginning.  Actually, it's nice to read that in Arkham City, you keep everything from the first game and just get stronger.  It's balanced by giving Batman more challenge instead of weakening him.
Title: Re: inFamous 2 Thread
Post by: fistfulofmetal on June 14, 2011, 09:07:26 AM
the ice jump power is my favorite thing about this game. just something about the way the Cole gets thrown into the sky, the sound the ice makes, and the how you can use the momentum to leap across roof tops is really satisfying.

Did we mention the crappy enemies like the Ice Titan, the Hive Mind, the Ravager, the Behemoth, heck, all of the Ice Conduits, Cole's shitty stun that makes him get pelted over and over, the crappy locale (Flood Town lolllllllllllll), the crappy characters (not ONE mention of Moya? They took the time to retcon John back in), the smorgasborg of developers involved (a sign of a malformed game, no less), the horrendous second half of the game, the boring side missions that are even more repetitive than the first game

Exactly.

It's players like that who convince developers that players don't actually know what they want.

Take AI as an example. Seriously, the gameplay complaint you'll hear the most is "brain dead AI," right?

But the easiest AI to make is one that's just about perfect. One which is always locked on and always scores the most debilitating shots. What is hard is making an AI that doesn't make the player feel outmatched from the outset.

And they'll say, "Yeah, but what I want is something like a human player..."

No, no they most certainly do not. The average action game has a player taking on 5 or more NPCs at once, and emerging triumphant, before moving on to the next skirmish. The average player, in an online fight against 5 or more organized PLAYERS, is a fine red mist before he knows he's been in a fight. And this example forgoes the human players who can do magic looking shit in a game, and would give this whiner The Tony Danza.

So they don't want "human" and they don't want a cakewalk. What they want is a challenge and, yeah, that's damned hard.

The demo for inFamous 2 took a long, long time to download. What the HELL is up with Sony's download speeds? It's one thing to know about the DDoS, but this has been true since before the breach.

So, anyway: The demo is really impressive. I'm glad I downloaded it. I'm playing the original pretty intensely lately, so I'm able to contrast the two readily. inFamous 2 is GORGEOUS. Everything about it looks better. You know, I really didn't care about the ventriloquist dummy style facial animation in the cutscenes until I saw how far they'd taken everything in 2.

When I went back to playing the original, I was happy to see that the game isn't ugly in comparison, but the differences are really clear. It also looks like the animation blending is much more smoothly handled this time around.
