I'm honestly hoping that the Wii2 is kick ass.  I hate that Nintendo occasionally makes amazing games on their stupid and dumb hardware.  The reason Microsoft getting into waggletard land isn't disappointing is because it doesn't have "Xbox" games I care about per se.  360 is awesome because it's all about the third party games.  Unfortunately, Mario Galaxy is only on the Wii.

so Nintendo really found out the key.  A double dip in a generation.

They rode the waggle wave and now that the gravy train is over, they re up and reinvigorate with the HD games so people buy again and they can even get the new shiny titles.

They say WiiU is a year off, but don't show any ds games, barely any 3ds games (all of which we knew about except Luigi), no new wii games, and wiiu is a year away.

The whole thing is puzzling. They had nothing to show.

Why would they show DS games when the 3DS is out?

And

Starfox, mario, mario kart, and Kid Icarus before year end is rather a good winter line up by nintendo standards.

Last year that was how people found about the 3DS games they didn't show at the conference: Paper Mario, Ocarina remake etc. Maybe rest of the Wii/3DS lineup will be found out that way like the re-announced Kirby game or Rhythm Heaven Wii, but just as likely nothing.

Nothing worthwhile in that conference.

So is it gunna play Blu Ray movies or not?
"custom" means this is likely the same situation with how the Wii had DVD as its media, but could not play DVD movies.

Pretty big disappointment... Mario 3DS may be good, and it was nice to see Luigi's Mansion wasn't forgotten... but the Wii-U is like - now we get the same multiplat games you can find anywhere else, this time with even more gimmickry.  BORING!

And no Xenoblade/Last Story  :-\

How is not releasing Xenoblade a shitty decision?  Are you like one of those dudes who says SEGA hates money cuz they won't drop $25 million constructing the next Shenmue snorefest?

Because they're releasing it in two territories and since they've pretty much written off the wii for those poor saps that thought it was the true gamer machine, the least they can do is give it a North American release.

Oh and I think Shenmue is dogshit so no, I'm not one of those people.

You really don't understand how capitalism works do you?  Publicly traded companies don't have the luxury of making OBVIOUSLY distinguished mentally-challenged DECISIONS.  They may make decisions that are bad in hindsight.  NoA has sales data that lets them know how certain games will sell, they choose to trust in empirical evidence.

well first of all,noa has to be there for doing something... what's their fucking job? redubbing peppy going "DO A BARREL ROLL!" once again for the 3DS remake?

and second, the game is already being translated by NoE why release the game in europe and not america? it's not like there are more jrpg nerds in europe

the real weird thing is nintendo publishing all these games,it's pretty clear they don't give a rat ass about the wii anymore so i can't understand why they do so

wait, what the fuck?

This looks like an utter disaster. Why would anyone buy this over a 360 or PS3; worse yet, why would a 360/PS3 owner buy this. $250-300 for slightly worse graphics, a host of ports, more Nintendo style rehashes, and a huge expensive controller?

Seriously, why would someone buy CoD on this instead of the other consoles. That seems to be the very demographic Nintendo is aiming for. In a couple years Sony and MS will reveal their next gen consoles. Someone explain: why will developers stick with the WiiU instead of moving on. We'll be stuck with another case of them being unable or unwilling to release gimped ports for a niche system.

And don't give me the bullshit about "well the next gen will cause developers great financial strain, thus allowing Nintendo to be a beacon of cheap dev costs!" I heard that when the Wii came out and look what happened.

there are more costs involved with releasing a game than just translating it.  NOA's job is to make money.  they can better achieve that task by not releasing niche core jrpgs on a system where they would sell worse than magical starsign.

they showed a load of third party games, all running on -whatever- looking exactly like their 3rd party brothers - yet when they showed games OBVIOUSLY made for the WiiU (the Mii games and, especially, Tekken) they all looked poor.

Mii games never push hardware, even on wii, and Tekken is a year and a half off at least.

I like instant switch between controller and TV but that's it, this shit will make controllers pricey and very sensitive.

Controllers often get dirty, greasy, thrown to the wall...etc so this will just add more trouble to the gamer.

The Wii U can output up to 1080p video via HDMI, and it can handle one tablet controller plus as many as four Wii Remotes or Wii Remote Plus wands. (In fact, the Wii U is backward compatible with all Wii games and accessories.)]

well, there goes that concern of controller cost.

Except DS has a touch screen and controller parts, it gets dirty, greasy, and thrown to the wall, and lugged around when I travel and I've never had mine break.  It will be about as much trouble as that.

Indeed Nintendo always has very good hardware build quality.

Do you think we're moving any closer toward that theoretical "one-console future"?

If...and it seems this time as though its no exaggeration...Nintendo has truly garnered the support of third parties. And they have still maintained an innovative perspective, and brought to the table a controller that enhances gameplay...

I believe we might be a step closer. Imagine. The WiiU will have first party nintendo games, hardcore and casual, AND the DEFINITIVE version of multiplatform games like Call of Duty, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, etc...

What reason do you have left to buy any other system?
(For me, Sony's first party efforts are the only remaining competitor.)

All of this combined with a gradual move toward Cloud-computing/storage and digital distribution...

Seems to me like its just a race to see who gets there first.

Please try to keep this discussion civil.

No, but what we are moving too is Nintendo's handheld being the controller for their home console, which is something they have wanted since gba linking to gamecube.

I think the best thing about it having 360 quality graphics, is that it probably extends this generation out till 2014.  360 sales are still rising and the console hasn't hit $150 yet, and Sony invested to much into ps3 to start next gen early, and this doesn't really force Microsoft to do an early launch.

I think Skyward Sword looks really good  :-[

It and Mario 3DS (which was slightly disappointing because it looks slow and rigid compared to galaxy) are the nice things Nintendo showed.

Watched the rest of the conference.  The audience retardishly cheering for Batman Arkham City coming to Wiiu at least six months after other platforms.  Does Nintendo stack the audience or just gas sane people that happened to wander in?

Wiiu looks really dumb.  There are some neat concepts and ideas shown, but Nintendo's approach is so stupid and dated and stupid.  iPad 2 is more how it should be, and Sony is daft if the Vita doesn't have TV out now, because both those can essentially do the same thing except you're not tethered to a base station.

I did appreciate the honesty when Reggie kept saying "or", because that's what it is.  That fake-Zelda tech demo had touch screen controls when it was on TV, then switched to use the controller display as the main one...where did the touch screen inventory stuff go? bunch of mutually exclusive design decisions.

The system seems relatively powerful, I guess.  360 came out in late 2005, this is mid-2012...you'd kind of expect something like that.  If I do buy one of these, I'll probably get multiplat games on it for the ~year before the next gen consoles show up.

From Something Awful

Quote
-Skyloft is the "hub" and is like WW's Great Sea, but with flying
-Hyrule is one giant dungeon, and the actual temples are like dungeons-within-dungeons
-Giant birds replace the horse/boat
-You will be required to revisit dungeons you've already beaten, a la Metroid
-Items will be upgradeable, but you'll have to find the necessary materials
-Dungeons have warp points like the cauldrons in WW, but they warp you back to Skyloft
-Zelda is a Saria/Malon/Ilia-type character and does not start the game as royalty
-There is orchestrated music, and it's awesome

Real talk: Assuming this thing is comfortable in the hands and will get a steady stream of multiplatform, I'm gonna be there day 1. Gimmicks aside, it's a better system technically, and it doesn't matter whether this thing is a stop-gap before "true next" or not, because I'm rich.

My biggest gripes are the name, lack of grips on the controller, and going with sliders over sticks.

This is like the Pacman Vs e3.

No mulit-touch and can only handle one wii u controller per console are mistakes by Nintendo. Whatever idea they think is so great to trot it out three generations in a row, that idea would be a lot more if you could allow muliti-touch and mulitple screen-controllers. Right now, its just Pacman VS HD. It's limited and the idea has been around for 9 years and hasn't advanced at all.

I wasn't hyped for it. I thought everything sounded like ideas that nobody took advantage of before and that it was basically a Wii for dudebro ports. Devs are excited they might be able to tap into the separate Wii audience.

I'm just surprised they had no actual games to show when it is only a year away.

Not confirmed, but a lot of info seems to imply it.  Most obvious is how Nintendo hasn't sold it as "Utopian split screen!"  I mean, it literally presented 'turn your back to the TV while three others play with wii remotes!' as a control option.

Let's look on the bright side:

I think the console is OK and it's obvious Nintendo is going after hardcore gamers, but if you already own a 360 there wasn't anything at all in the third-party reel to entice.  And while I think the controller is an OK idea, the usage examples they showed were not very interesting at all.

The one with the bird?  I thought it was totally meh, and was relieved to know I'm not mad when I read an IGN article stating the same..  But I think they said there was another demo which looked good.

But, duuuuuuuuuuuude, that nature demo was made by Epic!!!!

Looks like the Killzone 2 CGI trailer. Something the hardware was supposed to achieve and didn't.

finally we can play nintendo games at sane resolutions with detailed textures and special effects and evolved standard controls, this is a triumph unto itself

perhaps they have finally learned that innovation in gaming has nothing to do with the control mechanism and to quit chasing idiotic "immersion" fantasies that have nothing but novelty implementations*. innovation in gaming is a function for which hardware power (processing plus working memory) is the primary parameter

If you build it, Dudbros will cum

Sorry Nintendo, you're a few years late. This will probably sell well for awhile, and the ability to play Nintendo rehashes+quality third party ports will be a selling point for some folk. But what will this console look like a year after release, when we know more about the 360/PS3 successors. I have a feeling this will be another Gamecube-esque graveyard console

yeah, the concepts seem cool.  even this basic map on the controller screen is neat (ignoring the action game):

that stuff is neat.  iPad 2 is already doing similar things.  How nintendo is handling it is the problem.

I think the biggest thing here is that Nintendo has finally embraced HD - not some 540p or some dumbass proprietary resolution format, Wii U supports 1080p with HDMI.  For a company that for several years tried to pretend that HD was just an unnecessary fad, this is a big step in the right direction.  Not to mention that a tablet-controller is one of the least gimmicky things from a company who has spent almost a decade putting gimmickry ahead of everything else.

After reading more about it I'm not as negative as I was initially, controller sounds good, really ergonomic according to previews so that's a plus as initially I thought it looked really cumbersome. Though apparently it's range is the same or similar too the Wiimote which is kinda disappointing, but tbh I fully expected that. Have you played with it yet Sho Nuff? Is there anything to play on it on the show floor?

Yeah, I'm actually coming around to it myself.  As someone that completely skipped the Wii entirely, the Wii U looks like the Nintendo console that'll bring me back.  I'm still concerned about storage on this thing though and Nintendo's shitty online history doesn't give me a lot of confidence but at least they'll be getting 3rd party games that are actually of THIS generation.  Speaking of which, I don't know why the fuck that trailer of 3rd party games they were showing off was supposed to get us pumped up for ports of games that'll be a year old by the time system releases.  I mean it's cool that the system can handle it and all but is anyone really going to give a flying fuck about stuff like Darksiders 2 in the fall of 2012?

Will Darksiders 2 even come out for the Wii U?  It seems like there's always a huge list of launch or near launch titles for major consoles that never materialize.  I think a lot of these year old Wii U ports will fall into that category.

Having said that, I do think third parties will embrace the Wii U for at least a couple of years, just because of game budgets and the fact that it is a stopgap machine in reality.  It'll handle the current generation stuff and some of the earlier next generation titles.  Hell, if developers want to control game budgets, third parties may end up being a little more supportive of Wii U vs. Wii.  Given the touch screen, a lot of the latest iShit apps will probably make it to the system.

Well, Darksiders 2 is a 2012 title, probably sometime during the summer. So it's not a huge stretch or anything to imagine that it will launch on everything else at least within a few months of the WiiU launch.

the dev behind darksiders made the only real comment about the power, only saying it is more powerful than the PS3 and 360.

and one controller per system is kinda confirmed.  nintendo said it will try to do two, but no promises.

so, what are the chances that Nintendo will switch to a multi touch screen?

yeah, I just see multitouch as unnecessary, better core hardware for the console base is where the money should be focused imo. Also i imagine it's a resistive touchscreen for durability. Creating a capacitive multitouch screen that's durable costs a bit, this machine is all about cost cutting

Probably.

At this point, does anyone [outside of the nintards who will go crazy over anything] actually that excited about Pikmin 3? I mean, maybe if this was 2007 and we all still thought the Wii had a lot of potential, but now? Really? The boat's sailed, gamers don't care about Nintendo anymore and it'll take more than Pikmin 3 maybe coming out sometime within the next decade to change that.

pretty sure Vita used PS3 game footage when it was first revealed too.  it's just for show because they don't have anything else to show.  some people think the Zelda tech demo is an actual game or indicative of what games will look like.  the only playable games...err, "experiences" are Wii-quality.  there is no good tell of the power yet, but it's crazy to think it won't be better than the 360 and PS3.

The controller is nice and clearly has potential. My first thoughts were about Madden, but it could also be pretty damn awesome for RPGs/dungeon crawlers, tactical commands in a FPS, etc.

But of course what's the point if the system is only slightly more powerful than the Wii. That plus the controller costs could doom this thing pretty quickly.

The montage of developers was pretty funny given how they pretty much ignored the Wii for half a decade. Input gimmicks don't=innovation. Until a developer does something cool with this thing, I don't want to hear shit about its "revolutionary" nature.

watson's brain IS a power7 cpu, of which the 360's xenon is a (now fairly archaic) ancestor. outside of its massive cache, it's not THAT shit hot relative to other modern cpus (sandy bridge), though, and the wii u (mindtaker!) chip, given nintendo's emphasis on cheapness and low power consumption, won't even approach the server versions of that chip -- it'll be like a celeron dual-core to an i7

Ok guys, this thing will get a few ports that no one will buy thanks to no install base (except nintards that wil buy ninstuff only) in the first year.

Then the new PS and Xbox come out and devs stop making anything for this again.

What a turd.

Obviously they want more than just ports.  I don't necessarily think this E3 was the most appropriate time to unveil the system - I think the leaks forced their hand.  Apparently a new AssCreed will be unveiled tomorrow exclusively for WiiU, so we'll see what it looks like.

I wouldn't assume they are going cheap with this. Reggie kept saying the system will sell at a great value, and when asked about price, he specifically restated that he isn't talking about a competitive price, but a competitive value. As in, we're selling you the highest spec console that will be out there and a second display along with it. $300 might be their idea of value with that, but $400 might be their value level as well.

It's more Dreamcast using PS1/N64 games to showcase its capabilities, if that ever happened.

that said, Dreamcast had awesome port ups of great PS1/N64 games some time after the release.  Definitive versions of Rayman 2 and Soul Reaver are on the Dreamcast; PC version only has the high res 32-bit era assets.

Xbox 360 did have a higher res version of Gun and other Xbox games released for it early on too.

It's no big deal. I thought this was more along the lines of when they first showed the Wii or Microsoft first showed Kinect.  Just a promise of potential.  Again, Vita showed Playstation 3 games as its own back when it was revealed.

I doubt it is a catch up system.  With nintendo releasing under powered hardware we should expect shorter system life spans.  Hell the wii's life span wasn't even that short, it will 6 years when wiiu comes out.  Though we should probablly deduct a year because it's not like nintendo is going to release any good games for it after zelda comes out. :lol

I think it really takes after all the bad decisions from the dreamcast and forgetting the good. The Dreamcast was a generational leap released early with Sega giving it their all to please the gaming audience at the time, which was mostly "hardcore" gamers, with an arcade at home experience plus introducing a lot of qualities that were PC exclusive at the time. Nintendo is releasing a catch up system as a short term fix due to the Wii losing momentum by trying their hardest to cater to all audiences by adding everything they can from all of these into one.

Plus you have to remember that back then 3rd party exclusives weren't as rare, so while getting superior ports you got exclusive games and I don't really see exclusives for the Wii U using the technology in a way that isn't rushed at this point.

I'm sure there will be some good Nintendo games but man the console itself is everything I didn't want to happen, so why buy it?

Wait, wait, wait.  Nintendo should emulate sega?  The dreamcast?  No thanks I'd rather they stay relevant and not get bought by a pachinko company.

I don't care that sega went out with 'dignity'.  They had terrible business sense and their output suffered in quality after they went third party.  It was really fucking sad. I really don't give a shit if Nintendo makes a billion dollars off of wiifit while killing fzero.  I'm not dumb enough to take that as a personal attack.  In the meantime,  I'll have fun with what they do release.  But then again its all a moot point because I'm arguing with an idiot who stereotypes cuz it makes life simpler, m i rite?

real talk: sega is pretty good these days.  they even make money!

and i would argue that aside from tokyo ead and retro, nintendo on the whole has seen their output drop in quality.  i mean, where the hell did intsys go?  nintendo may not have gone third party, but with what happened to their output from having to stretch resources to appease their new casual audience, they may as well have.

As I understand it, Intelligent Systems literally is in charge of designing "intelligent systems".  Devkits, api, developer tools, etc.  I imagine they are busy with wiiU stuff.  Still, they made two Advance Wars, three fire emblems, warioware wii, warioware dyi, rhythm tengoku gold, a lightgun game for wiiware and a mediocre paper mario this gen, I'm guessing Rhythm heaven wii too. Not too bad.  I almost wanna say they did Planet Puzzle league.  HAL does kirby.  Gamefreak does pokemon.  NST had an exodus. Although I hated twilight princess I loved phantom hourglass and think skyward sword looks great and will redeem the zelda team.  As mentioned Retro and Tokyo EAD do great work.  I think with the exception of Wii Play/Chess the rest of the Wii ___ line has merit, even fit.  And hell, New Super Marios Wii is my favorite mario ever... so :rock ead

Last internally developed games I remember coming out of sega was sonic colors and virtua tennis and... valkyria chronicles 3?, but I haven't been paying attention tbh.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata seems bamboozled by the slump in Nintendo's share prices following the Wii U reveal at the company's E3 press conference this week.

Iwata says the apprehension from investors could be because they don't yet understand how much potential the new console has to change the way games are played.

"The reaction to (Tuesday's) presentation and what I heard from people I met and the mood of the convention did not chime at all with what happened in the stock market. It's strange," Iwata told Reuters.

"It is easy to get the mistaken impression that this is just a game console with a tablet," he suggested.

"People who came to the presentation and tried it out have understood very well that it opens up a lot of new possibilities. But people who have not tried it will find it hard to believe that this controller will change things."

Nah, it's not the NSMB team, that's Software Development Group 4, who are busy working on NSMB Mii, presumably.  This one is by Tokyo EAD Group 2, who previously did Super Mario Galaxy 2.  The original Super Mario Galaxy was Tokyo EAD Group 1, not sure what they're up to at present but probably something weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooo related.

Super Mario 3D isn't exactly exciting me yet, but I trust the developer.

yeah, I was stoked when they announced Mario 3DS and the developer.  All the footage shown here just doesn't look good.

It's weird that the first comparison I could think of was Sonic 3D Blast, which doesn't make sense.  I think it's because it seems like a weird force fitting of 2D and 3D Mario game ideals.  But Sonic 3D Blast wasn't that..
