We're on the Verge of Creative Bankruptcy

Let's go back to my graphic at the beginning. The reason every major game (that doesn't involve dragons) looks the same is because of the Modern Warfare series. So far we have two games and a spinoff that each took in as much money in the U.S. as Avatar. We already know what the best-selling game of 2011 will be: Modern Warfare 3, which was shown for the first time at E3.

Don't get me wrong, what they showed us was cool as shit. You're thrown right into the action, starting out under water ...

... emerging to see that, holy crap, New York is under attack!

Boats are burning in the harbor!

Look! There's Lady Liberty on the horizon, as if to remind us of what's at stake!

I can't wait to play it. But Modern Warfare 3 has some serious competition in the marketplace. Just earlier this year, maybe the best-looking console game ever made, Crysis 2, hit shelves. In the first level of that one, you're thrown right into the action, starting out under water ...

... emerging to see that, holy shit, New York is under attack!

Boats are burning in the harbor!

Look! There's Lady Liberty on the horizon, as if to remind us of what's at stake!

Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not shitting on game developers. I have friends in the industry, and they're each smarter and more talented than I am. I'm the one who wrote a novel about a man with multiple-personality disorder who, in a twist ending, finds out he was his own rapist -- I'm no one to throw stones.

But this isn't about any lack of creativity among game developers, artists, writers or anyone else. It's about money, and the fact that the market has trapped games in a fucking creative coffin (and developers will tell you the same). Everybody complains about sequels and reboots in Hollywood, but holy shit, it's nothing compared to what we have in gaming right now.

For instance, each of the Big Three game console makers took the stage at E3 to show off their biggest games of the upcoming year. Microsoft led off with the aforementioned Modern Warfare 3, which is really Call of Duty 8 (game makers like to switch up the sequel titles so the digits don't get ridiculous). Next was Tomb Raider 10 (rebooted as Tomb Raider). Then we had Mass Effect 3, and Ghost Recon 11 (titled Ghost Recon: Future Soldier). This was followed by Gears of War 3, Forza 4 and Fable 4 (called Fable: The Journey).

"Seriously, we have no goddamned idea what number we're on now. Just start over."

Next were two new games, both based on existing brands and both for toddlers (Disneyland Adventure -- a Kinect enabled game that will let your toddler tour Disneyland without you having to spring for a ticket -- and a Sesame Street game starring Elmo).

Then, finally, we reached the big announcement at the end (they always save cliffhanger "megaton" announcements for last, Steve Jobs-style) and they came out to announce that they were introducing "the beginning of a new trilogy." Yes! Something fucking new!

Then this came up on the screen:

Confused? So was the audience. By "new trilogy" they actually meant that there would be three more Halo games. Did I mention that Halo 4 is actually Halo 7? Which means they intend to put out at least nine Halo games before they're done? Oh, wait, they also announced they were doing a gritty reboot of the decade-old Halo to make it an even 10.

Yeah they all look pretty good. I'd hardly call Japans RPG output for the West these days a flawless victory though... I actually just saw an article that Atlus picked up DS2 with 'E3 2011' in the title, I don't know if they actually showed off the game on the floor or anything

Iwata’s full response:

In the case of the original Wii, our intent was to extend the gaming population, but of course we needed to think about how we were going to motivate non-gamers to play with video games, so we came up with Wii Sports and Wii Fit, as well as how the Wii system was designed.

For example, in the case of our products, approximately 50 percent of our users are a female audience, the other platforms are around 30 percent.

So, the Wii has already achieved very impressive things, but there were two things we were not able to realize: We could not keep up with the hardcore gamers and the Wii original was not compatible with HDTVs.

This time around, Wii U is compatible with HDTV, so we now expect the Wii console to be as powerful as any other console and all the necessary buttons are there [Iwata holds the new controller and demonstrates its use].

When we approached the third-party publishers to tell them about the Wii U, all the publishers volunteered to make advancements in the field of shooting games that they are very good at. For example, ordinarily when you are playing a shooter type of game, your main TV screen is the battlefield; however, oftentimes you have to open a new window to select items or weapons or to see the entire map.

But you don’t have to do that anymore with Wii U because you’ll have a screen that will show you that information.

But this is just one of the roles. It will also have another mission, as well. By having another screen, we believe it will pave a new way in the opposite direction to attract the non-gamers today. It’s no denying that we’ve expanded the so-called gaming population, but there’s still a number of people that have yet to be interested in the Wii at all, even after we introduced them to such applications as Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Even those people, we want them to utilize Wii U one way or another.

For example, there’s video chat or they may want to do Web browsing while watching the screen on the big TV and managing operations with the screen in your hands.

For the past decade or so, many attempts have been made to link the TV and the Internet, but so far, nothing has been popular. So, the PC is still the strongest device to take advantage of the Internet, and now increasingly smartphones and tablets.

The ordinary TV sets in the household are located 10 feet away from yourself, and so it’s not the optimal solution to see the small letters of the Internet. You may also have problems with inputing and browsing.

On the other hand, when you look at this controller, it’s one foot away from your eyes — it has almost the same distance of the PC and other smartphones. In other words, this device is capable of handling such activities for you to input the letters in the palm of your hands.

In the future, if the TV and Internet can be used together, the TV will have a remote with a screen — and it will look very similar to how the Wii U controller is today.

Great, more FPS garbage.

Whatever happened to playing games that help to stimulate the mind, stir the imagination? Puzzle games, adventure games, games with excellent stories.

These first-person shooters are nothing more than glorified tech demos, and you'd have to be a serious brain-dead to make them the core of your gaming existence.

Well I'm one of the biggest weeaboos on the board and FPS is faaaaar from my most hated genre. I'd much rather play the most bland and generic FPS than any MMORPG, RTS, sports sim (arcadey sports games are fun though), racing sim, waggle/minigamefest, or physics puzzler.

i'd say its one of the more diverse genres. if the biggest rule to abide when making an fps is that your camera must be in the first-person viewpoint and have projectile weapon-based combat, then you have a lot of room within that to make whatever you want

would you say Doom and Bioshock are samey? Or Stalker and Half-Life? Fallout 3 and Bulletstorm?

Do you like third-person shooters, though? Something like Vanquish, where the playstyle and controls are very similar to an FPS.

Magus your argument makes no sense. Once again you are harping on PREMISE rather than actual GAME DESIGN.

Fps, just like any other genre, is dependent on design. Duke Nukem 3d has amazing game design. Half Life 1 and 2 have great game design. Serious Sam has great game design. Chronicles of Riddick has amazing game design.

By the same token, just because a game is in first person does not mean it is an fps.

And this is coming from someone who is not a particularly big fan of first person shooters.

Game design is level design, weapon variety, level variety, enemy variety, dialogue, replay value, difficulty (does it spike? does it escalate?), exploration. Basically everything that encompasses of what makes a video game GOOD.

Post by: magus on June 20, 2011, 01:54:30 PM
the last fps i played was goldeneye on the wii,it was about somewhat cover based shooting,it had regenerating health, the weapon compartment consited of a shotgun,a gun, some things that went boom and too many machine guns, enemies consisted of soldiers, soldiers and more soldiers, and one level was an incredibly boring night club where this song looped infinitely "REMEMBA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA"

and this is how my twisted mind see fps,so much standardiness (i know i know it's not a real word, put down your gun grammar nazis) to stun a clown

To me that just sounds like an average or bad game and not indicative of an entire genre. FPS is among my least favorite genres too.

And yes, Bulletstorm's demo rocked my face off.

the last fps i played was goldeneye on the wii,it was about somewhat cover based shooting,it had regenerating health, the weapon compartment consited of a shotgun,a gun, some things that went boom and too many machine guns, enemies consisted of soldiers, soldiers and more soldiers, and one level was an incredibly boring night club where this song looped infinitely "REMEMBA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA-BA"

and this is how my twisted mind see fps,so much standardiness (i know i know it's not a real word, put down your gun grammar nazis) to stun a clown

It would be really cool if people could give you some example of FPSs that would change your mind about what the genre has to offer!

Portal is not a first person shooter and neither is Mirror's Edge or many of those other games. We just tried suggesting he play Portal and now you're listing it as an fps. :wag

Not getting a Mirror's Edge 2 is one of the worst things to happen this gen, second only to the Xenoblade/Last Story non-localization.

We've got to get him away from the gaming ghetto somehow. If that means convincing him that Portal and Mirror's Edge are FPSs, then maybe they will be the gateway drug to the greener pastures of glorious Western development [i.e. Halo, Call of Duty, ect.].

Yes, we all know that they have virtually nothing in common with the general idea of an FPS and that's the point. The genre isn't just "get a bunch of guns and fight soldiers/aliens/terrorists. There's also outlier games that buck genre trends and tropes and blend genres while still maintaining the outward appearance of an FPS.

The western development pastures definitely aren't green... they're brown and grey and rendered in Unreal Engine 3 with excessive bump-mapping and shader effects.  :D

magus, play Mirror's Edge and Portal at least. Portal is like 2 hours long and has a more entertaining and lighthearted setting than most FPS. And Mirror's Edge is just awesome, running, sliding, wall-jumping around super-clean Ikea showrooms and futuristic cityscapes with an amazing soundtrack.

I'd just suggest he stick with the basics.

Games that have a first person viewpoint but aren't shooters and can be played on 360:

- Portal
- Mirror's Edge

FPS' that are awesome:

- Duke Nukem 3d
- Half Life 2
- Half Life episodes 1 and 2
- Bulletstorm

You guys make me ashamed of my hard on for Japanese games. Pathetic. Equally as annoying as anyone who is anti-Japanese gaming. Two extremes do not make a right.

Bulletstorm is UE3 and is probably the most colourful FPS game I've ever played

He said western games doofus. I'm talking in general.

And even then:

Xenoblade is getting a localization.

Actually I was only (mostly) joking with that line, of course there are plenty of colorful and nice-looking western games (Uncha and Mirror's Edge especially, such great usage of color :drool). I just couldn't resist making that joke :P

Playing Metro 2033, I am enjoying most of it besides the "shooter" segments. I'm just tired of that gameplay.

Are you playing Metro 2033 on the Ranger mode?  Supposedly that makes things better.  I say supposedly because I only played it on Ranger mode, and ammo is scarce and enemies go down quick.  I thought the shooting action (against humans, at least) would have been great if the AI wasn't so bad.  And even then, I tried playing it as a stealth game.

Not to get into whatever this thread is about, but I was randomly thinking about Psi-Ops yesterday.  That was a fun game.

I've decided I'm doing a boycott of anything corridor related. Anything without an open map is getting ignored.

Metro 2033 was pretty boring for me, I didn't even finish it. If all I played were Metro 2033 on the FPS front, I'd be pretty tired of "that" gameplay too.

Shouldn't judge the entire genre on what one, mediocre -- especially in the gameplay department -- game makes you feel. That would be like me saying I'm tired of jrpgs because I didn't like White Knight Chronicles.

I am not judging FPS by Metro, as I have enjoyed Metro so far. I'm just saying the shooter segments are less interesting than wandering around the outposts, the stealthy stuff or the survival/spooky stuff.

only thing I remember really disliking in Breakdown was the controls for the jeep

I have to see if it is backward compatible later
