Title: anyone have problems with games that've been in storage for a long time?
Post by: Positive Touch on June 19, 2011, 11:47:52 PM
i've been pulling a lot of my old ps2 games out of storage recently and i noticed a lot of them have the same wierd marks on them - near the out edge of the disc (in one small section only, near the top of the disc) it looks like someone spilled some juice on them.  so i try to wipe it off and nope! it won't come off.  wet some cloth and try again and nope! still won't come off.  damn near every disc i've checked has had this same problem.  i stored all the discs on their side in some big plastic bins and they've been sitting in those for 3 or 4 years.

i haven't dug out the ol ps2 to actually test them out yet but i'm already shitting myself with worry.  i want to sellf these off but if theyre all fucked then i'm out a ton of money.  anyone every hear anything about this?  help would be greatly appreciated?

I've had some discs with weird wavy patterns on the bottom, but they still played okay.

Signs of disc rot

On CDs, the rot becomes visually noticeable in two ways:
When the CD is held up to a strong light, light shines through several pin-prick-sized holes.[1]
Discoloration of the disc, which looks like a coffee stain on the disc. See also CD bronzing.[1

ok just check everything and THANKFULLY it's not as bad as it could have been.  it only affected one box and that box didn't have good shit like my saturn games, LUNAR games or id anthology.  it also didn't get to everything in the one box, and it's just ps2 game (not my limited edition copy of mgs3:s either :D).  so GAME ON!

How do you prevent disc rot? I have a ton of disc-based games but never had this problem... just want to make sure though, especially since I'll be moving to a place where my game collection will get more light.

You dont. Its up to the manufacturer... its gonna happen whether you like it or not. Look up "Laserdisc Rot" - it's very common
