Title: [360/PS3] Shadows of the Damned
Post by: iconoclast on June 20, 2011, 09:12:06 AM
A Massimo Guarini game. Oh and Shinji Mikami, Suda 51, and Akira Yamaoka also worked on this or something.

EA

Suda and Mikami only make shiitty games nowadays. Can't believe EA greenlighted this.

Shadows of the Damned is incredible. It oozes style, the shooting is really great, the dialogue is hilarious, and the music is fantastic. It feels like a Mikami game in terms of design with Suda's style.

It's a lot of fun, and reminds me of a fusion of RE4, Godhand, No More Heroes, and Silent Hill all rolled into one, style-wise.  The game play can best be described as Resident Evil 4 with better movement, since you can move and shoot at the same time, plus roll to avoid attacks.  The soundtrack is awesome too.

Definitely worth playing.

sounds like a dream game! I sold off a few games and snagged the el cheapo Asian region version off play asia, so my copy is in the post. Can't wait.

It also shipped within 2 hours of placing my order, which is pretty incredible for play asia.

Really, the only flaw to me is that you can't skip cut scenes.  Something tells me that the game ends a little too quickly and then has no new game+ or extra modes (there is an unlockable difficulty setting, whch IIRC has no achievements tied to it), hence some of the lower scores.

Yeah, new game + could put this game on another level. cheevs are easy enough, i guess. also, difficulty cheevs don't stack.

This game almost has Resident Evil 4 like pacing. I can't put it down. Every level offers something new: a new weapon, a new enemy type, a new environment, a new gimmick. And it keeps building up on these new features one after another like some parade of chocolate and sweets and awesome.

I'm almost on chapter 4 which means I'm more than halfway through, but this game is so choice.

Easily a ps2-era Capcom quality game.

40 is a perfect price.

As good as the game is, I can't suggest buying it at full price.

I've clocked maybe 3 and a half hours and I'm already halfway through the game, but there's more. There's 50 achievements and I almost have half of those too without not even having beaten the game once yet. I could get three easy right now if I wanted. It's very possible to get every achievement one playthrough except for the ones that are related to difficulty.

New game + could really go far for this game.

Play-Asia fail, for some reason they aren't shipping my preorder til July 8th.

thats sucks man  :( i just went online, saw they had copies available and ordered one. Got an email saying it shipped 3 hours later. looks like an admin fuckup at their end didnt allocate enough copies for pre-orderers. Play Asia seems to have a few service errors like these happen, but I have been sweet with them so far and have made like 20 orders (knock on wood)

This game doesn't strike me as a budget title or anything, but it definitely should have been released in the $30-$40 range.  I got it for $56 from Amazon, but enjoy this kind of game enough that I wanted to get it now.  The game isn't exactly original in any real way, but it's been really enjoyable.  It's too bad that it's lacking in extra content and appears to be on the short side.

I'm almost done with chapter 3. The game is pretty good so far, but I'm finding the whole scenario and story to be really dull so far. It's not nearly as interesting as any real Suda games, unfortunately.

The combat is solid though.

I really think this game would have had a big following. Then again, it has the word Damned in the title so it's hard to advertise.

They should have forced them to change the title.

I had no idea this was the Suda/Mikami thing and that it came out so soon. So yeah, way to raise awareness for your game. Watched the GB QL and I'm getting it tomorrow, need something to wash away the filth that is Infamous2. Seems like it has tearing on both 360 and PS3, so there's no real difference between the versions?
Title: Re: [360/PS3] Shadows of the Damned
Post by: iconoclast on June 26, 2011, 07:31:00 PM
I just finished this. It's a decent game, but it gets a little repetitive and starts to drag every now and then. And pretty much every boss was terrible too. But I still enjoyed it, for the most part.

I think my biggest issue with the game is that the gameplay isn't as good as a full Mikami game, and the story and characters aren't as interesting as a full Suda game, so it's kinda in this middle ground of mediocrity.

Now I need to play it two more times for the 1000/1000, and I don't really feel like it...

Post by: DarknessTear on June 27, 2011, 10:07:13 AM
I got the platinum for this game last night. I'll probably never touch it again but I loved it for what it is. I've never liked a game with Suda51's name attached to it so it's nice to get a little style to match the substance that Mikami brings to the table. Some things could have been better, but they could have been improved in a sequel. Too bad this game will never have one. Steve Blum did a great job playing Garcia Hotspur, by the way. Especially his delivery during the book reading parts. Now I'll just wait for the soundtrack and try to get this game out of my head.

Just beat Easy.... I wonder if I can run through Hard in 5-6 hours or so, and send this back to Gamefly tomorrow. Guess I'll give it a shot.

My strategy for hard was pretty much:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Normal enemies: Spam light shot + run up and press square or whatever the button is on 360.
Mask versions of those: Shotgun
The spiky guys that roll at you are easy. Just stand in front of something and then shotgun blast their stomach when they're down or spam with the Hot Boner. Or dodgeroll away from a wall or let them run into each other.. yeah.
Oh and those electric guys in the last chapter of the game with the red things on them, just use the sticky shot from the hot boner a few times and they're done.

Stock up on a fuckton of Tequila, too. Don't bother buying any red gems. Use the red gem glitch where if you get a red gem and go to a save point, press start and hit quit and go back to your save and pick it up again. It only works as long as the save is where the gem is accessible again since the gems respawn. Sorry if I make no sense. Sleepy. :x

Hard mode is basically easy as fuck if you know the patterns of all the bosses too.

the game is good, but as iconoclast said, the setting is a bit boring and the 'attitude' of the game feels kinda forced.

Gameplay is solid, it feels quite similar to Vanquish with more of a corridor approach, where Vanquish had a lot of wide open spaces. Graphics are fine. The writing is entertaining enough and theres some good one liners.

Music is the high point of the game! Love the soundtrack, it's interesting to hear Akira Yamaoka do more upbeat music but still have his unique, dark vibe.

8/10 game so far but I'm only on act 3.
Title: Re: [360/PS3] Shadows of the Damned
Post by: iconoclast on June 29, 2011, 01:52:37 PM
I haven't had any problems with Hard so far, I don't think I've even died yet (at the start of chapter 5). The game is super easy.

Anyway, it's a decent game. The core mechanics are very good - Mikami's influence is obvious. It's like a faster version of RE4 with the evasive roll from Vanquish. The problem is, the level design gets really repetitive because your objectives are basically the same throughout the entire game (find a key, run through darkness and shoot switches, find more keys, run through more darkness, find more keys, etc). They do try to break it up with mini-games, but most of those are exceptionally awful. The first one with the chandelier is okay, but after there's one of the worst turret sections I've seen in years, and three awful horizontal shooter sections. The patterns for the boss fights are okay, but again they're really repetitive and easy to dodge, so it just becomes a slog to burn down their health.

The story is meh. The only two interesting characters in the game are Garcia and Johnson.

I like the game, but it's not that great. I'd probably give it a 7 or 7.5.
Title: Re: [360/PS3] Shadows of the Damned
Post by: Himu on June 29, 2011, 04:37:05 PM
I think the story and characters are pretty good. The stories that Garcia and Johnson read are well written and hilarious. I like that they shell some light on the bosses you fight. The underworld too, has its own unique identity and the game really embraces it.

I think that, while the basic set up is very repetitive, the way you end up doing it is never the same. Sure, you're always getting keys to progress, but you do it in a variety of ways. The light/dark mechanic is excellent and makes a simplistic mechanic something more interesting. It really makes the game for me.

8.0 game for me. It'd be a 9.0 for me if it were more challenging, it were longer, there were more open/bigger areas, and it had new game + and some extra modes. It'd really benefit from a sequel and it's a shame we'll never get it.

Nah, it's better than Alan Wake for sure. That game was pretty average; SotD is a good game, but it has some crap in it (75% of act 4 is terrible). The combat is really fun, it's the other areas that are lacking.

Anyway I'm about to get my 1000/1000, the final cutscenes are rolling so I figured I'd make this post while I wait.
Title: Re: [360/PS3] Shadows of the Damned

This game was pretty awesome, but GHM was super evil to make it so that difficulty achievements didn't stack. Easy is insultingly easy; slaving through it for the red gems wasn't much fun at all.

More shooters (third, first or otherwise) really need to crib the 180 quickturn; it's, like, god's gift to stick aiming.

Just finished this.  I can't believe there's no new game+.  No new game+, no unlockables, no multiplayer and a 5-6 hour game?  Uhhh, what were they thinking.  This is like Madworld all over again.

As to the game itself.  I think I liked it.  I definitely liked parts of it and I definitely didn't like a couple of parts.  The gameplay seemed like the same 6-7/10ish gameplay that is in every Suda51 game, but when you play a Suda51 game you don't care and put up with the unpolished, kind of crappy, gameplay for the overall experience full of character, crazy creativity, and fun fun fun fun.  This game definitely had some of that, though at the same time I think this was Suda's least creative and interesting game, which still makes it more creative and interesting than most shooters.

What worked:
+Art direction was surprisingly freaking great.  The game looked macabre in a way that no other dev has really captured recently.  It looked like art design quality I'd expect out of a Silent Hill game by Team Silent.  A lot of the grotesque statutes and stuff were really neat.  Sure it shows it's UE3.0 a bit, but they managed to really make the game look HORROR, which rocks.
+Music was great, as expected.  Yamaoka never lets down.
+A lot of homage stuff was good.  The Evil Dead level in the lake was  :lol so awesome
+Some neat gameplay ideas/stages like the tetris block stage, overall the level design was good
+They did a good job with the light/darkness gameplay concept.  Some good level design around that like the blindness hand w/umbilical cord area near the end
+World map was cool
+The picture books were a nice touch and the BIG bosses were cool even if easy
+Cutscenes were enjoyably shlock
+Voice acting was pretty good.

What didn't work:
-The entire shmup thing was freaking terrible.  And doing it THREE TIMES.  Ughhhh, should have been 1 area at most.  NMH rank 6 shmup stage was more creative the first time and also played better than this
-Big Boner thing was freaking terrible.  Basically Grasshopper always sucks at mini-games, so they should stop having ones that play worse than the main game which already only plays passable.
-UNSKIPPABLE FUCKING CUTSCENES.  This is 2011...wtf!  And you'd always die right after a cutscene on some 1 hit kill thing so die -> loading -> cutscenes again -> 1 hit kill; luckily you don't die much because it's easy
-Game is a joke in challenge.  It starts getting ok challenge about midway through, but never ramps up any further and the bosses are all a joke
-The camera sucks, it's too close and in a few boss fights it's broken.  The Flemming 3 body part spinning section was totally fucking broken trying to keep up with the moving parts thanks to the shitty camera.  Same thing on the flying boss after that.
-The actual combat is extremely average.  A couple of guns, and a couple of enemy types...repeat
-The dialogue was the worst yet from Suda51.  I mean I'm used to C-grade cheese from him after stuff like NMH, but it really does seem like no man older than 13 could have written this.
-On the PS3 the game ran pretty shitty with stutters when saving and loooong load times between every level; game crashed twice on me.  Good ole' Grasshopper polish

I think, it's very much a 7/10 game, but it's not a bad game and worth a play if you like Suda's work or the horror genre.  It's definitely better than the crap that was No More Heroes 2, and maybe about on par or better than stuff like Samurai Champloo, but Killer 7 and NMH1 still stand above SoTD.  Out of Suda's 3 big budget games, this is the little trooper of the set, a sort of fun action adventure by a studio that doesn't know the meaning of polish.

The part with Flemming and the final boss are really easy, just use the machine gun homing bullets and you won't even have to aim.

5-6 hours? Sounds like a buy @ $20 game if there ever was one.

It really is too bad this game has unskippable cutscenes because with the simple addition of skippable cutscenes & new game+, I'd totally do a 2nd run and if it's anything like Vanquish the 2nd run would be even MORE fun because you know how to approach everything, can skip all the bad cutscenes, and just enjoy the best the game has to offer.  Re-listening to the ost, which is SO GOOD, I'd definitely replay it and bump it to an 8 if they just fixed those two problems.  The unskippable cutscene one is the worst, can you not skip cutscenes on UE3.0 because it loads during them?

The part with Flemming and the final boss are really easy, just use the machine gun homing bullets and you won't even have to aim.

Well you still need to look at them to lock and the camera in those parts is pretty schizo (although watching some youtubes I could've used a better strategy; I was standing in the middle of the 3 parts spinning and trying to follow the 1; though I don't think there's a good strat for the final part at all since the youtubes I saw everyone was spinning around trying to track the boss and failing often)

If you're smart you can interleave level loads as cutscenes are playing. That being said you should be able to skip a cinematic sequence and go to a black loading screen while you pull in the rest of the data (which goes much more quickly). See Gears for this done right.

Is this game meant to be ridiculously easy? I'm already on Act 3-4, and the achievements look like there's only 5-4 at most.

Yeah.  From 3-1 until the ending the difficulty remains the same.  Plus you have dozens of drinks in case you ever need them.  Only time you ever die is from 1 hit crap or stupid mini-games.

Yeah, the game is piss easy on any difficulty. Never died on anything besides the chase scenes and turret level.

I died twice from the electric dudes grabbing me because for some reason the QTE to escape didn't seem to ever work and it'd just 1 hit kill me even though I had full life.  Then I learned how to not get grabbed and that was that.

I'm pretty disappointed this game is casual easy on Hard :\

Still a great game though. Hated the Justine levels, and the Big Boner section.

Finished the game tonight. Too bad that the

trick ending is ruined if you look at the trophy/achievement list.

Well, got my rental copy of SotD. Might give it a whirl tonight.

Will play on hard and hopefully laugh at how easy lame it is.

Just beat the goat-man riding a horse.

I'm liking the dialogue and music a lot. Garcia Hotspur is a great character.

The boss fights so far are kinda lame mechanics-wise.

I died once near the beginning at that hand farts out darkness. For some reason the QTE didnt show up the first time I went near it.

Enjoying it, though.

Started a new game cuz I want to get two more achievements before I send it back to gamefly and the fact you can't select chapters or skip cutscenes is maddening.

The best bit of the game so far was the difficulty select screen. I must of sat there and listened to the music for about five minutes.

I do like popping headshots with my boner, however.

I have to beat it 2 more times too. I set up separate save files (Normal, Easy), and switching back and forth every time I complete an Act (Beat Act 2 on Normal -> Play Easy and catch up)

Finished it. Game is definitely in the lower-tier of third-person shooters this gen. Bit of a letdown, but I can't say I'm too surprised.

Didn't like that one of the end bosses had an insta-fail manoeuvre -- that felt cheap, although I only fell for it once.

Which one was that? You mean when you can potentially shoot Paula? Hardly the worst part of that fight. Clipping (the Hot Boner mine shot clipped through Fleming so many times), uncontrollable movement (my gun would randomly move up and down while aiming without even touching the sticks sometimes, and I did try multiple controllers) game was so baby easy though it was never a problem.

On the whole I enjoyed the game, incredibly average though with zero replayability unless you're an achievement whore, I think I finished with about 9 hours on the clock. I even ended up finding Garcia a little funny. Still it was a kind of slapstick ham fisted humour I don't like, and Lollipop Chainsaw Massacre looks like it's going for a similarly egregious gaudy style. Count me way the fuck out, Sudas stuff seems like style over substance, and this new style is lame.
