I think the worst game story trend of this gen though, are total non-endings that set the game up for a sequel. See: Bioshock, Gears of War. Often you'll beat a game and theres no fucking payoff

I do hate game storylines that try to be serious and dramatic, always full of crap writing, poor pacing, and other nonsense that makes low-budget indie movies look like Oscar material (hurr, GTA4 is definitely up to the level of the Godfather! Bloody idiots, it's also annoying how no one ever follows-up and embarrasses these people in the future when the hype is gone, writing stupid shit like that you deserve to have it follow you forever). Just accept that the medium isn't mature enough to handle anything deep and focus on the damn game!
