Title: Google+
Post by: Brehvolution on June 30, 2011, 03:12:16 PM
Anyone got any invites?  :P

Seriously though, the more I read up on it, the better it sounds. The 'circles' idea is what really intrigues me. It looks like(if I'm understanding correctly) that you can keep friends, family, and coworker conversations separate a lot easier. This is a deal breaker for me.

'Huddle' also sounds great for group text messages.

I'm not saying it is a facebook killer, but I would love to give this a try.

I signed up a couple places so if I get one, I will offer 10 of them to EB folk who want one. I think you get 15 invites once you are in.

I already blocked certain Family members from seeing my wall posts 'cause I hate hearing shit through the grapevine about what I posted . Circles does sound cool as far as managing that.

Also, thanks Cajole for the invite!

It's pretty awesome.

Hangouts is an awesome concept. But I only have a webcam on my netbook, need to get one for my desktop for it to really be useful for me. Sparks needs a lot of work, or an "Add from RSS" option. Circles is hugely promising to me, especially as an amateur photographer. Oh and the photo part of Google+ is damn slick (http://thomashawk.com/2011/06/google-a-bold-step-forward-in-the-world-of-social-photo-sharing.html).

Google Maps, Calendar, and Gmail (as a theme) both got design refreshes today that line up with the design language in Google+, and both look pretty cool, especially Calendar which before now looked outdated as hell. Google Docs needs a new design the most though, it's like the last Google site to not even use the new logo. And the spacing is all out of whack.

Photos being linked to Googles photo service is awesome considering how you can actually click GIFs and they'll actually animate.

Last I checked, I can "delete" my Google+ profile whenever I please.

What they meant is users won't have to opt-in. Which I still kind of don't buy. You need a Google account to make it work, and unfortunately most people use Google without having one.

The main point of being on Google + right now is to have something to wave your cock about, ironically on Facebook (and twitter)

Google Buzz packed a mean buzz
Title: Re: Google+
Post by: Tasty on July 01, 2011, 12:49:20 AM
Buzz was pretty great from a technological standpoint. I mean you can't argue otherwise if you dig Google+, because the stream from Google+ basically is Buzz. Works the exact same way. Muting posts, attaching links, uploading photos, commenting, editing, etc. are all from Buzz. Actually Google+ sharing is sort of a gimped Buzz because Buzz would let you import a bunch of posts from other services like Twitter, Flickr, etc. The closest Google+ gets is Picasa uploads, and it only does it for uploads from within Google+ itself.

It's a shame the privacy fiasco shot Buzz's kneecaps clean off, though. It was a lovely service to use. I myself had been using it from last summer until Google+ launched, it was pretty awesome if you followed the right people. But with these kind of sites, people they don't want to go out and find interesting people, they want all their friends they already know to find them. So it's sort of an inherent laziness, too. IMO the worst part about Buzz, technologically, was that you could only post from within Gmail. That severely hamstrung it after the privacy fiasco. Posts could be viewed outside of Gmail, and you could even comment on and like them. But you couldn't post from outside Gmail without a third-party client. And that is lame.

Yeah it was alright, I thought it was pretty unintuitive and badly designed personally and it just defaulted to integrating with other google services I didn't want to integrate like posting banal status changes in google chat  >:( I was really into google wave though, I'll probably use G+ quite a bit since I use google stuff to communicate with (nerdy) uni/work friends and acquaintances, and I usually talk to them online more than anybody I usually hang out with irl who I'm friends with on FB.

I actually never really got that much into Wave. I'd check it every month or so, but it never really served a purpose. Technologically speaking it was pretty amazing and ambitious, and thankfully the best parts like real-time editing were added to other Google apps like Docs. But it never really did anything for me, and felt very heavy (the opposite of every single other Google site, including Google+ and Google Docs) and performed somewhat bad, and layout-wise it was a mess. Even waves themselves were a clusterfuck. Trying to follow the GAF waves was an exercise in getting my eyes sodomized, with pictures, embedded content, polls, indenting and nesting, font colors and sizes and... ugh. Makes me shiver. I'm glad for the technology it delivered, but I'm also glad it's gone and that the employees who worked on it are doing more relevant things.
Title: Re: Google+

Yeah I just used it coz of work and group projects at uni and all the nerds were into it. It was pretty messy for sure, but worked well.

Google+ is a better Facebook and a better Tumblr mixed into one, with a little Twitter sprinkled on top, and with Buzz acting like the hot fudge at the bottom.

all my programmer friends are jumping aboard, so it'd basically be a special-purpose facebook for the tech nerd circles I'm in, sort of like how myspace stuck around for a while as a special-purpose site for local bands/music scenes before it went completely under. I'd post all my nerdy stuff there and post the (relatively)non-nerdy stuff on facebook. I haven't gotten an invite though.  :-\

Invites are up for me.

Besides that, they did some neat changes. The black bar follows you on the page. I didn't think I would like that (I usually hate fixed anything) but I think the black-ness makes it usually unnoticeable, until you want it.

Also, the amount of unread notifications shows up in the favicon, which is neat. Unfortunately the number seems to be see-through, so it's hard to read.

They also put out a video about businesses on Google+. (https://plus.google.com/105923173045049725307/posts/E3mVj6nskaX)

When I add someone to a circle for an invite, the whole circle gets the message. I can't just send it to individuals. I got a bunch of requests so that is why you got multiple messages. I'm done now though so you won't get anymore.  :P

The 'over allocated' stuff its really strange, it's Google, they're smart but with so many missteps in their social networking software attempts I really wonder if they know what they're doing. I would love to see Google+ thrive, and I hope Google stop being knobs and get lots and lots of people into an app I will actually enjoy using. Ugly, uninspired, boring, unintuitive, some words Facebook brings to mind.

There are alternate stream views. One of the biggest requests that should be pushed out soon is setting a certain circle as the default stream.

Is there a way to create notes on a person or change how we view their name?  I don't recognize people like Cajole immediately and it would help if I could put a note to remind me who Joel is.

Not yet.

I was told of a way to use an alias for certain circles but not in the opposite direction. For instance, I have it so my profile says "BlueTsunami" for people I add from GAF (and put in their respective circle) and no where else. It would be cool if Google adds something like you're suggesting seeing as how their system seems more conducive towards following and friending people you don't know in real life.

Google+Facebook allows you to see your Facebook stream inside Google+.

Simply Connect to Facebook, and get all the updates on your Google+ Facebook tab.

That's exactly why I've always thought that when Facebook's demise comes, it will be faster than almost anyone expects. They've made it sooooo easy to share that data with every other app in the universe that they are effectively just handing the baton on to the 'next thing'. Not saying it will be G+, mind. But whatever it is will just allow a one-click take-my-whole-FB-account-with-me deal and people can safely kiss FB goodbye.

Go to your profile screen > Edit Profile > Scroll down to Other Name > type in the name you want and click custom in the "Who can view this" drop down

It'll allow you to choose whichever circles you've created

i don't think it replaces the main name on your profile. it just add's an "other names" section in your "about" tab. at least from what i can see. use "view profile as..." with someone in your gaf circle and see what i mean.

It's impossible for you to hit it if you upload your photos through Google+, as they'll always be resized to 2048px if they're over that limit. And photos 2048px or less don't count towards the 1 GB of storage.

You can upload larger images through Picasa and they won't be resized, but anything over 800px in Picasa counts towards the 1 GB. Videos longer than 15 minutes on both Google+ and Picasa also count towards the 1 GB limit.

I bought 20 GB of storage for Picasa earlier this year so obviously it's not a concern for me, even less so now. :P

Probably because they want to flesh out their now-barren circles. When (if) G+ gains more popularity and people have enough real life friends to populate their circles i'm sure it'll become much rarer.

If you aren't "social" in the first place - G+ wont be any different (even worse, no Bejeweled Blitz). The only positive I can see is that this one is less intrusive, and is "part" of the everyday services you use with GMail, YouTube, etc. so it's not much of an eyesore.

You log into GMail, you sign onto your Google Reader, iGoogle, and there's the top bar with notifications that people replied to your stuff, added you, etc.

I'm not against social networking, but I found FB and Twitter approaches lacking in a few key areas; the former is harder to manage and very bloated while the latter encourages everyone to spam and doesn't foster extended conversations, by definition.

Mt biggest gripe about SN will always be trying to convince the people that matter to jump ships, regardless of the service's quality. And I really don't really have it in me to invest in more than one service.

Having said that, I'm still liking what I'm hearing about G+.

Then:
1. Don't add them to your (active) Circles.
2. Don't post things Publicly or to a Circle they are a member of.

You'll never see their posts, and they'll never see your posts. When someone adds you to a Circle it's like "Following" on Twitter. It doesn't mean shit to you or your posts.

Someone might be able to deduce what circles you have them in based on the membership, but beyond that, I don't see the problem there.  If anyone comments, they're revealed to everyone in the circle anyway, like -- fantasy scenario -- if you have a fuckbuddy circle, it's not exactly a secret when someone responds to your internet booty-call.

Is there a way to share a specific (public) G+ post on twitter? Without just linking to your profile? I'm looking for a 'permalink' type option but can't see it. No doubt I am merely aged and blind.

I dunno, G+ actually has me happy to talk to people on the Internet again, which is something of a miracle

SAN ANTONIO—For nearly a week, Spurs center Tim Duncan has reportedly emailed his teammates invitations to join him on Google’s new social networking site, Google+. “Please join soon, as I’ve already begun sharing game plans and upcoming events via Google+’s Circles feature,” Duncan wrote in an email Tuesday, adding that team chemistry “may suffer” if people don’t have access to each other’s +1’s. “I’ve pinned the San Antonio Spurs under my Sparks, and you should too as soon as you’ve set up your profiles. And, also, guys, please switch out your old Comcast and Earthlink email accounts for new GMail ones so we can communicate easier via Google Groups.” As of press time, no Spurs player has entered Duncan’s current Google+ Hangout.

So when does G+ become relevant? Would be a fun chart to look at.

that's a disingenuous graph. nobody knew the value or appeal of social networking back when facebook/twitter started. i will be shocked if g+ doesn't plateau soon and quickly.

I think you're forgetting how hot MySpace was for a while. In 2005 and 2006 it was basically on fire. Everyone knew what social networking was about when Facebook, and *especially* Twitter started gaining steam.

Facebook took a long while to open the doors to everyone. Twitter was launched in July 2006. Most people had never heard of it until probably 2009 or so. I think I'm pretty obsessed with shit like this, and I didn't join Twitter until January 2008.

I'm on G+ but don't really use it. I use social networking to keep in touch with people who I no longer live nearby or who are busy. Every mass movement from one site to another, from LJ to Myspace to FB, has made me have to recollect a bunch of contacts to essentially do the same thing. I often lose contacts with each move. Social networking hasn't really lead me to meet new people. It's just been like people changing their phone numbers all at once and each time it happens, some people get lost.

We're in semi-crunch, so I've only been using it to manage the hordes of people who have been adding me. It's actually made me a little resentful and twitchy.
