...because the last Zelda game I completed was Wind Waker way back when, and I'm in the mood for some more now.
Anyway, got the GC version running on Dolphin at 3x the resolution and it don't look half bad. I mean, for a last gen game at least. Gives most Wii titles a run for their money.
Just got up to the bit where you turn into a wolf for the first time. Though everything leading up to it must of been the longest amount of time spent tutorialising I've ever seen in a game.
Gonna play some more. Controls fine with the 360 controller.

The nightmarish 5 hour tutorial is what's kept me from ever restarting this game. Got up to the last full dungeon and couldn't quite figure out where to hookshot so I hung it up. Had somewhere near 60 hours playtime and hardly did any sidequests. :o
-
collecting those light balls at the moment
this game has more talking in it than a final fantasy title
-
Shitty wolf Link is shit. Other than it was pretty fun.
-
I spent like 60 hours with this game. Game owns.
-
I liked Twilight Princess. Never quite understood all the hate it got.

No since there are plenty of games that people over here love and slobber over that I can't stand. Demon's Souls being a random one off the top of my head. There are also games I like that everybody hates over here or on GAF that I quite like ala GTA 4. The difference is I don't go on and on about it. I state my opinion and then move on.

I liked Twilight Princess. Never quite understood all the hate it got.
Outside of vocal, message board mouth-breathers, it didn't really get much hate.

That's probably true. I remember lots of gaf hating on it back in the day which probably skewed my perception of how it was received.
-
The biggest fucking revisionist history argument in gaming is that people hate the latest Zelda game until a new Zelda comes out as if all Zelda fans have one opinion or that people aren't open enough to change their opinions. I loved Wind Waker and TP upon release and still do.

I stopped at the first lightbugthing hunt. No regrets. Super boring. Super stiff. Super ugly with bad music to boot. As far as lycophanian zeldas go, It was still better than Okami.
-
lack of whimsy is its strength, and i'd take tears of light hunting over sailing for triforce shards
-
Lycophanian is not a real word. Twilight princess is a better LUPINE zelda than okami.
-
Once you past the horribly long handholding intro, this game is pretty rad. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Yup.
-
It loojed horrible on hdtv, unplayable for me
-
I think I'm nearly done with the forest temple. I beat up a fat baboon and got his boomerang. Rescued a bunch of monkeys. Still a couple more to go, tho.
I feel like the game's finally just started and I'm finally done with most of the tutorial crap. It feels good, I've missed Zelda dungeons.
This is doing more to pump me up for Skyward Sword than any of the E3 demos or previews.
It loojed horrible on hdtv, unplayable for me
play it on de emulator, it looks pretty

Isn't that before the first dungeon though? I'm pretty sure you quit this game before it started. It's like you made up your own anti-chieve.
-
The light bug quests were pretty lame but they got better as the game went on, and ended before the second half of the game started.
The controls were fine and even the graphics were pretty good, the only obvious exception being field geometry and textures. But the rest of the game was very pretty.
-
ugh, i've played every mainline zelda game up to wind waker and for some reason, twilight princess never appealed to me. some of the brief impressions from some of the hardest to please borers are tempting me. zelda is the only good thing nintendo has going for it outside of the core mario games.
-
I liked Twilight Princess. Never quite understood all the hate it got.
personally i was dissapointed because it felt like they said "everyone sure loves ocarina! lets take that game, make a few tweaks, and release it again!" with each new zelda since OoT i was hoping that really drop all the old trappings (specifically the items, puzzles, and enemies they kept reusing) and make something that felt fresh. after the unambitious TP i realized that nintendo never intends to do this so i bailed on the series.
-
i just played through most of oot and it feels super-ghetto compared to tp. tp's only major flaw -- and it IS a doozy -- is the opening five hours. after that, it is an amazing piece of game design.
-
hey link, help me round up some cattle
you know, to help you get used to moving your character around in a three-dimensional space
-
You know, I don't even think I would have minded the actual tear collecting shit if you could do it as a human (Hylian?). I hated hated hated the wolf gimmick.
-
TP had the best dungeons in any 3D Zelda. OoT is better overall, in my opinion.

playing oot on the 3ds, its the small things that reveal how they didn't fully grasp 3D yet. You have completely barren and empty field, but if you bomb a random spot by a tree a hole will open up and you'll get a heart piece. uh, ok.
twilight princess is the fourth 3D zelda and their craft kept improving. not to undermine the impressiveness of oot for 1998; directly compared today (or 2006, whatever), twilight princess is better. skyward sword already seems to be fixing the more minor problems of twilight princess. and hopefully they use the ds games as a model for what not to do.
also, twilight princess is double the length of any other 3D zelda game
-
MM is the best Zelda!
-
I just couldn't get into this game. I got past the first five hours, I think, but I guess I was already worn-out.

let's be real here. the same shit is in TP and TP's world is just as barren if not more. The only thing TP does better than OoT are dungeons and even that's arguable because I really only feel 3 (arbiter's grounds, snowpeak, temple of the sky) out of TP's dungeons are equal to or better to OoT's dungeons. Sidequests, exploration, rewards, difficulty, everything else is better in OoT.
And even better in Majora's Mask.

I actually started replaying Twilight Princess a few days ago. I played the GC version when it first came out, now I'm trying the Wii version. I fucking hate the HUD on the right side though. It's far too big. GC version was my favorite game in the series, though... with Majoras Mask being close behind it.

Sure am, TP is better than OoT if the only reason you like Zelda are dungeons. Personally I like exploration more and TP sucks balls at that. Oh great, let's go...bug catching and...and...get a shitty reward for doing so.
-
have you played oot?
-
over 10 times yes
-
and yet your post implies it has better exploration than twilight princess
not that twilight princess had a great overworld or anything
-
Do you know what exploration even means?
An overworld is not the only means of exploration. Exploration is...just that: exploration without a hand hovering over you telling you what to do and being rewarded for it. Go to Lon Lon Ranch and you get a horse. You're not pointed in that direction, but you go anyways. The Biggoran Sword is an optional sword given only for doing a sidequest. There are multiple secret passageways that lead to Fairy caves where you gain new magic and abilities. You can practically do any of the dungeons as Adult Link out of order. Wanna do the Spirit Temple first? Go ahead! This is without mentioning that you have two time periods to explore. By setting things in motion in the past, you can do things in the future, like use peapods to find new secrets locations.
This is like saying Final Fantasy VI has no exploration, after all, the overworld is a barren wasteland, but that's irrelevant.
TP in comparison is far more barren as there's considerably less interesting thing to do in it. The only major secret I can think of in TP is that multi-floor dungeon and that dungeon sucks.
-

you sure it works like that? i'm pretty sure the game push you out toward a certain order specificaly if i remember correctly something like forest -> fire -> water -> shadow (think i'm missing one there)
-
Am I sure? I've done it plenty of times. That said I always do forest first. OoT is fantastic with sequence breaking.
-
I want Cube version of TP, so pricey.
-
Really, the Cube version is expensive now? That's the one I got back in the day, and I see used copies all over for like $30.
-
I bought the Wii to play Twilight Princess day one. Then I bought the Gamecube version at release and played it again :'(
edit: I like the Wii version more. but on gaf everyone seems to be for the gamecube verison.

there is an intended order, but you can do some dungeons of order (not all of them, without glitches). there will be places to shoot with an arrow before you have the bow and things like that. there's also no reason to do them out of order, and the game tells you what to do through cryptic half-messages.
-
Wii version of TP is superior.
-
I didn't enjoy the waggle slashing. Felt out of sync.
-
i thought the waggle improved the sword fighting
-
wii version is never superior. gamecube > wii
the free market agrees.
-
oh sequence breaking... pfftt! sequence breaking doesn't count,it has to be intended
-
Wii version of TP is superior.
Truth. Didn't mind the small amount of waggle, and bow and arrow were great with the Wiimote.
wii version is never superior. gamecube > wii

Pretty sure the Wii version has sold more.
-
I felt the sword fighting was pretty precise. It's fucking Zelda, not Ninja Gaiden. Wave your wrist a bit and it works aces. Only problem I had was the shield bash move.
-
god the "roll behind the enemy" move was horrid with waggle
-
I like the Wii version because it is widescreen and pointer aiming (plus aiming and moving) worked great. Gamecube had better camera control and sword mapped on a button, and there are other slight differences like the way item selection worked, but the Wii version was better where it mattered.
I still don't get why the Gamecube version wasn't widescreen
Skyward Sword is going to be way better with sword combat if it is like Wii Sports Resort. It's not a digital action mapped to a waggle, except for the special attack where you shake both the nunchuck and wii remote to do a flip attack.
-
god the "roll behind the enemy" move was horrid with waggle
You played the waggle version? :teehee
-
i played the gc version first -- twice! i decided to give the waggle version a shot last month
-
My problem with the sword controls were that sustaining a combo required literal hand waggling for about 3 seconds. In effect the feedback slashes provided didn't match up. Felt wrong.
-
In oot, you need the bow from forest temple. Then you can do either fire or water, but i think you need them both to be done before moving on. Then you can do either spirit or shadow.
-
I liked the game even though the pacing was a bit wack. Really low at the start, good in the middle, too fast at the end (the dungeons seemed to just come back to back with nothing between).
I felt the sword fighting was pretty precise. It's fucking Zelda, not Ninja Gaiden. Wave your wrist a bit and it works aces. Only problem I had was the shield bash move.
Sword waggle was fine but that goddam shield bash was horrible. Ugh.
-
Yeah shield bash was pretty bad. I did enjoy all those secret moves though.
-
TP is better than OoT, that's common knowledge. Both are great Zeldas.
If the only thing you like Zelda are dungeons, sure.
-
If better exploration means 100s and 100s of random holes you can fall down and get 20 rupees in than I prefer TPs crappy exploration.
-
That's a nice challenge, Borys. I"ll do it sometime this year before SS.
-
I was watching some videos on the youtubes, and one area that TP excels at is the scale of the boss battles. Compare Volvagia to Morpheel and Gohma to Armoghoma, it's just uncanny.
Yes, obviously TP's got an edge since it's on way more powerful hardware, but it's still a surprisingly technically impressive game.
-
Just got to the Arbiters Grounds. I hear this is supposed to be the first great dungeon?
Typical of Zelda for me, I'm finding everything apart from the dungeons to be a drag. The story is annoying; running about the overworld is boring; and the mini-games are shite.
2D Zelda is where it's at for me.
-
I actually thought Lakebed Temple was the first good temple (first good water dungeon in a Zelda game too), but yeah Arbiter's grounds is where the game kicks into high gear.
-
Lakebed Temple was pretty good, yeah.
The game slows down too much with the story. It's embarrassing -- this isn't Final Fantasy.
-
I liked all the dungeons tbh
