are you a famous rockstar with a history of issues with drugs/alcohol?

Sad but expected. She refused any help, and it seemed like some people around her were more interested in riding the gravy train than trying to help her.

I think you mean expected.

I think you mean expected.
ah, yea

I'm not sure I ever heard her music or whatever, but I think TVC liked her which is good enough for me.

Really sad. She was great. Hopefully she has tupac levels of unreleased material.

Why did you have to prove us all right, for fuck's sake. Amy :gloomy

She had been working on an album with Questlove so who knows

Fortunately, we have another 6 years or so of Adele before she gets Mama Cass'd.

I had no idea who that was until I googled...
An oft-repeated urban myth states that Elliot choked to death on a ham sandwich.[14] The story, which started following the discovery of her body, was based on speculation in the initial media coverage. Police had told reporters that a partly eaten sandwich found in her room might have been to blame, though an autopsy had yet to be conducted. Despite the post-mortem examination finding that Elliot had died of a heart attack and no food at all was found in her windpipe,[12] the false story that she choked on a sandwich has persisted in the decades following her death.
Dear lord, what a legacy.

internet life:
first post on Facebook - someone went to state fair: make joke that everyone looks like Amy Winehouse at state fair
5 posts later: everyone is posting about amy winehouse dying: realize she died

Has anyone figured out/declared what the new official music/lifestyle/fashion trend of the 2010s (that everyone will eventually hate) is/will be yet, to replace hipster indie rock or whatever it was last decade?
-
...dubstep?
-
Unfortunate in the sense that I actually liked her which is rare for modern music. But yeah she was a trainwreck.
-
I still have no idea wtf dubstep even is. I guess since I'm almost 30, that must mean is it in fact the music of the new generation and I'm too old for it.
-
Last decade was about rap, not indie rock. Rock is dead.

I said "music" :tomato

Just use ole man tricks and google Diplo.

Just read the Wikipedia entry, never heard of any of the artists or songs mentioned

i wouldnt say dubstep... it will die quick from the repetition, and nobody knows anything beyond skrillex.

One day people will figure out that just because he puts out a lot of stuff, it doesn't make it GOOD about Lil Wayne. Man I want to be there for that.

Er...rock, mainstream-wise really is dead.
NYC just recently killed its last rock station. If you can't make it in NYC, then....

So do the kids today think of rock in general as, like, old people music?

So why do rock bands sell more albums and have bigger tours than most rappers :teehee
-
To be honest, I thought she would have been dead about two years ago. To make it this long is something of a surprise.
Regarding music of the 2010s, remember at the beginning of last decade, boy bands and teenage girl pop stars (NSync, Britney Spears, etc.) were still huge. We have no idea what will be the dominant genre because things change. All I know was that emo was one of the worst things to happen to pop music last decade. As long as nothing will approach the ubershittiness that is emo this decade, I think everything will turn out alright.

The next decade will be about electronic music influenced by the last two decades of Warp's, Thrill Jockey's, and Ninja Tune's entire output...maybe in my dreams
Either that or anime opening and closing theme songs will influence all the musicians and that will become the defacto standard of all music worldwide

rock bands from the last decade...?

Coldplay, Nickleback, etc?

Queens of the Stone Age, Audioslave, Foo Fighters
i.e. all that shit that sucks. (shots fired)

The music project I'm working on now is pretty much thinly veiled 90s Square RPG music (with different instrumentation and a bit more early 20th c. classical and mid 20th c. jazz influence, but composers like Hamauzu already had a lot of that anyway). I figure (a) despite my attempts to become a legit classical/jazz performer and listener over the past decade or so, it's still what comes most naturally to me so I may as well go with it and (b) after 80s/8-bit game music had a fair amount of influence on popular music recently, 90s/16-32 bit is probably the next big thing
-
The older I get the less I'm interested in hearing purely electronic music or music that sounds like it was created mostly or solely on a computer. But that's just me.
-
What boy bands are huge? Group bands aren't popular anymore no matter the genre. It's mostly about individual artists, these days.
-
So do the kids today think of rock in general as, like, old people music?
I have no fucking clue. A lot of them like indie rock, which is where the best of rock is these days, but for the most part kids seem more into rap.
-

But can those bands make it in NY?

I've just had enough of it. I can enjoy it but not so much that I need every new band or musician I hear about to be keyboard and loop dominant.
I wish the indie scene would stop jacking off to the 80s. I wonder if this is how 60s youth felt seeing the music scene overflowing with synthesized pop twenty years later.
Someone young: please grab a guitar and rock the fuck out.
-
I don't really care what the instrument is. I just like to hear somebody actually playing any kind of real instrument in a song. And ideally not just a riff looped digitally over the entire track.

Doesn't change the fact that these days hip hop is the face of mainstream music along side pop stars.
So I don't really see his argument.

Computer based electronic can still really be good, but different strokes. I know what you mean, though which is why I prefer electronic acts that use real instruments.
It really depends on how it's handled. Not all digitized music are nothing but loops.

Genres of music don't seem to die anymore, they simply fall out of the mainstream. Right now pop/hip hop dominates everything. Both have taken on electronic trends

I'm really surprised at the popularity of electronic music nowadays, as someone who has listened for 15 or so years. I never really got into rock or rap, apart from a bit of time when I was in 5th-8th grade and I listened to 80's buttrock/metal.
Also surprised at dubstep's ongoing popularity. When it first started getting big, in 2005 or so, I thought it would have a very short shelf life, such as its direct (and far superior) ancestor, 2-step garage. But 6 years later and it's bigger than ever. :gloomy

Who in their right fucking mind has ever given a sideways fuck about "the mainstream"??? You pretty much have to go back to the Beatles to find a time when a top tier talent was the most popular act in the country, and they didn't really get good until they started doing a fuckton of drugs after their "poppy" stage anyway.
Although, Arcade Fire did win Album of the Year last year, so I guess anything is possible. There you go, a top tier talent getting mainstream recognition for a fucking change.

Oh man, the search for this answer provided me and the bore with so much humor and awkward PM exchanges. An apology for misleading you is long overdue, I believe.

Remember the weird "how old are you; you're too nice to post here" PM you got two years ago on GAF... yeah.
It was after you created that Animal Crossing(?) OT. I thought you were literally 12, a few others thought you were a 25+ manchild. So I thought I'd ask you directly, and the result was that awkward PM. But in my defense I was trying to avoid coming across as a pedo while at the same time refraining from spewing manchildishness accusations. Too bad the answer was far less interesting than I thought :P

Oh right, yeah. That was a weird PM.
I forgot I did that OT, shame the game was so lame. :/ Don't think I even posted in the thread after that. :lol I was basically into the first game when I was 12, and just kept playing the series because I enjoyed the games. Kind of like Pokemon.

It had less to do with your gaming taste (we've come to terms with ninthings) and more to do with your posting style and choice of words around that time. They used to project a 12y/o image of you. Just like your old GAF avatar, I guess. But in all fairness, you've come a long way since 2009.

Ah right, yeah. I kinda did a character thing since I was new to GAF and didn't want my feelings hurt. :'(
Now I don't really care. :P

I love electronic music more and more as I get older (used to not respect it, as a kid), but my most favorite bands use a mix of regular instruments and electronics. Out of any genre, nothing quite beats a rock concert, imo...something like the Flaming Lips live.

Waaaaaaaay more. More of a Pokemon fan too, if that's possible. Less of a blanket Nintard though.

Green Man only looks teen. He is going to enroll for the remake of 21 Jump Street.

Good voice and dumber than a box of rocks.

That's not fair. Rehab isn't totally boneheaded - it's not a base Ke$ha-esque dumpsterlady celebration of substance abuse - it's tinged with a bit of honesty, too.
Most of Back to Black is really fucking good, particularly the Mark Ronson produced tracks. She deserved attention for this stuff and got it from self-destruction. It's really sad.

This. Also the people around her were almost as dumb. How do you let your gravy train spin off the wheels like this. Same thing with Michael Jackson
-
Love is a Losing Game is almost audiorgasmic.
And Back to Black is the best album of the last decade. Nothing better. The Beach Boys of our generation.
-
Musically I quite liked her. I'm a pretty big fan of classic soul and R&B and she was easily my favorite among the recent wave of British blue-eyed soul. The fact that she was a trainwreck actually probably helped her music to a degree at least at first. See Sly Stone for example. But eventually it catches up with you.

What Stoney said.

Yeah, I don't think we missed much...
