It's August, so that means QuakeCon is coming again to the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. Here's what's on the docket for this year:
-Rage presentation [obviously, since it's out in early October], maybe a playable demo
-Prey 2 presentation
-Elder Scrolls V: Skryim presentation
-Doom 4 teaser? [they've been teasing the teaser for at least the past two years, I'm hoping it actually shows up this time]
There's usually a few other random games in the show floor [Two Worlds 2 made an appearance last year in playable form]. I'll post some impressions and the like here once things get started later in the week.
-
Made it through the line, currently at my computer.
Vendor area had demos for Rage [Xbox360 version] and Tribe Ascension. I played Rage a bit and I'll post some impressions later.
-
Looking forward to impressions. I'm so on the fence with this game.

whens the skyrim presentation
Tomorrow, around 1:30 I think.
Forget about RAGE, find out if Tribes is any good.
Also, is Brink at quakecon?
1. I'll check that out later today or tomorrow.
2. There's a Brink open tournament, plus Brink is free the whole weekend. I imagine quite a few people will be playing it here.
Now for some Rage:
-There's a lot of questing to do. Little outposts scattered around will give you quests that send you into various hostile areas to fight raider dudes and win weapons, ammo, and ect.
-Graphics look amazing, in the big picture. There's a lot of detail, the art design is incredible, animations are fluid, everything feels large, and the textures are sharp, but...
-Texture pop-in is an issue and it's not something that's really going to be fixed. Spinning around will cause you to see some blurry textures that slowly sharpen, the length it takes depends on factors like PC vs. console, how fast you turn, and whether you've seen that particular texture before. It's noticeable if you're looking for it, but most of the time it's not really something that you're thinking about.
-Buttery-smooth framerate, PC and console.
-Item-crafting
-Buggies and four-wheelers to ride around on
-Feels somewhere between Fallout 3 and Borderlands, minus the stiffness of the former and grinding of the latter
-I've not sure how large the game world is, but they've talked a lot about how the game really opens up after the first 3-4 hours
The only thing I've seen that hasn't met or exceeding my expectations is the issue with the texture loading and that's fairly minor.
Edit: Forgot to mention that they also are demo'ing that co-op bank robbery game. I'll check that out sometime and post some impressions.
-
That trailer is the first thing to make me excited for RAGE. Neat-o.
So this is some giant LAN party thing? Maybe Brink will finally work right.

Some filthy poors who couldn't afford a room:

-
I'd laugh at the poors, but I think I did the same thing when I was 16 and went to SDCC.
-
Payday: The Heist
-Objective-based co-op
-Only saw player characters playing the robbers
-Feel is similar to Left 4 Dead
-Feels heavily structured without much variation
Should be worth playing, hopefully there's more to it than what was shown in the demo
Tribes: Ascend
-Huge, wide-open levels
-Lots of high-flying jumps
-At least three different vehicles
-Shop-style loadout
-Fast-paced
I haven't actually gotten to play it yet because the lines for it are long.

It's amazing how he can just go on and on about the technical side of videogames. :lol
Also, just saw the Skyrim presentation. It was AMAZING.
-
DETAILS BITCH
-
I missed the first part half of it. :'(
But what I did see was:
-Dual-wielding of all weapons and magics
-Dungeons are way more detailed and unique [going by how amazing the opening dungeon looks compared to the opening dungeon of Oblivion]
-Huge dragons and huge monsters all up in
-Music was ZOMG
-Some actual lighting going on
-Some spells are quite epic in scale
-Inventory is incredibly streamlined [everything is divided into lists now, with details and an image of each item appearing in the middle of a screen as you scroll through the lists]
-Each item can be viewed in full 3D in the inventory
-There are puzzles
-Third-person kill moves [for dragons, at least, not sure about regular monsters]
-There's a spell that will bring up a glowing line to direct you to your next mission target, for weak-sauce players that don't want to explore
-Another spell slows down time
-Not all monsters\animals attack the player [giants that herd woolly mammoths ignore the player, caves are infested with non-hostile bats]
-Dragon shouts are really powerful
-
can you kill the bats?
did you see any cameras while you were in there? i just searched youtube to no avail.
-
Just got back from the Prey 2 demonstration:
-Mirror's Edge + Blade Runner + Oblivion/Fallout 3
-Open world that lets you choose when you want to do things, or not do them, pick up missions, wander around, explore
-You can also do random stuff like attack thugs that are beating up some guy or just randomly push people over railings [the latter generally draws the attention of the police]
-Hostage-taking is possible, but doesn't always work
-Opening level reminded me of the opening of Bioshock
-Anti-gravity grenades
-Hover boots
-Arkham Asylum-esque detective mode lets you follow trails of clues
-City level is packed with detail and very vertical
-Movement was fast and fluid, jumping from ledge to ledge and climbing up walls
-Some bounties flee, forcing you to chase after them through the city
-HUD is incredibly minimal, sometimes completely absent
-Gun is holstered by defaults, which lets you actively draw your gun to threaten people
-Totally stole the show, for me. Better than Rage, better than Tribes: Ascend, better than Skyrim. Dig it.
-Alien stripclub
March 2012, same as that other scifi RPG...Mass something. Can't seem to remember what it was called...

Do you own Fallout New Vegas? You already have it :smug

Carmack's keynote is hilarious. he flat out says he shouldn't be talking about some things, then continues to.

Rage wont have dedicated servers, lol.

someone recorded the ~40 minute Skyrim demo
first minute, the guy on stage asks everyone to please put away cameras as they don't want shaky cam footage online. I don't think the guy filming caught that.

Lots of people there at 3AM? What were you guys playing
-
The BYOC was still packed at 3 am, though people were starting to leave. Mostly TF2 and Brink, but I saw some people playing Eve Online, Starcraft 2, Call of Duty, and so on.
This year they had an insanely fast internet connection for all the computers. Some form of voodoo was involved, I think.

Hey, you cram several thousand gamers hopped up on Bawls energy drinks and running on no sleep for the past 36 hours into a packed ballroom and things start to get a little crazy.
And the ballroom was absolutely packed. They were nearly 400 above the room's maximum allowed capacity.
-
Could you buy beer there?
Whats your gaming rig specs?
Where there people with laptops instead of desktops?
-
You couldn't bring beer into the BYOC (well, technically... :teehee) but the hotel has several bars, and there was beer at the tournament finals.
There wasn't a lot of people with laptops, but there were some. A guy next to me was there with his netbook. It was good enough for Quake Live.
BTW, they had two sections of the Berlin Wall there. It was pretty sweet, it made me want to act up now and smash male nor politix. :rock

What kind of rig do you have?
I'm in the process of looking for something new, but my lifestyle is kind of making me lean towards a laptop :bawl
-
Intel i7-2600k
Nvidia GTX 570
8GB RAM
I built it back in January.
-
Whats your gaming rig specs?
Core 2 Duo E6750, 2.66GHz
NVIDIA 460GTX
4GB RAM

GR... you're playing EVE online demo at quakecon. what.

GR... you're playing EVE online demo at quakecon. what.
No, I downloaded it at QuakeCon. I'm playing it at home.

That Carmack keynote was waaaay more interesting than that shitty Skyrim demo. OMG the same stuff you've seen already except live! Everything in that quakecon demo is the same as the E3 build, and all the sequences were scripted to happen in the exact same way. Still excited for Skyrim but if I was at that quakecon demo I would've been disappointed
-
It was almost certainly scripted to show off certain aspects of the game [particularly the dragon battles]. That aside, it looked amazing, so nothing particularly to be disappointed about.
-
Yeah, it was more that it was the same stuff with a bit of filler that they had shown already during E3 and in trailers
-
It's much different seeing it on a massive screen with a thumping sound system in a room packed with a 1500+ people, believe me.
-
Great Rumbler did you get to rub Joe's tummy?

In Spring 2010, Gamesauce Magazine featured Romero on its cover and contained an in-depth interview with Romero written by Brenda Brathwaite.[15] In the interview, Romero publicly apologized for the infamous Daikatana advertisement.
lol I wish I had that magazine.
-
Romero will make his glorious return one day, when you least expect it.
-
awesome thread, thanks GR! Prey 2 sounds wildly more ambitious than I would have expected after playing Prey. Nice when a game comes from left field like that.
