First off I must say...I wanted to hate this movie pretty early. Within around 10min or so I thought the movie would suck, and I saw exactly where White Man was coming from with his complaints. The flaws that I saw were still there, but by the end of the movie I couldn't possibly bash it. It's not the best movie of all time, but it's pretty damn fascinating, and good. Not classic; the action is definitely classic, but everything in between the action is what holds the movie back.
As I always say acting is the most important aspect of movies for me. Although Heat features some pretty big names I can't honestly say they all carry through. Al Pacino is usually awesome, but on many occassions in this movie his trademark forced behavior is a bit too overdone, to almost comedic poroprtions. De Niro is awesome as usual imo, as is Sizemore. The supporting cast is pretty good, although Ashley Judd sucks as does Pacino's wife in the movie, who looks like a poor man's cheeseburger version of Demi Moore.
But my problem lies in the beginning of the movie, which just seems poorly executed. There's a lot of talking and bad acting and it really takes you out of the movie imo. Maybe the director didn't know what he wanted to do; this sounds reasonable considering how fucking long the movie is. Many of the early attempts at establishing each character's relationship with their wife/girlfriend seemed rushed and half assed imo. Mann tries to beat it over your head when in reality it doesn't need to be made so obvious. And that brings me to the dialogue. In terms of the relationship stuff it becomes quite obvious that a guy wrote all of it (Mann), and it doesn't seem realistic in many cases. But for the most part the dialogue in the rest of the movie is good.
It gets better as it progresses though, and when the plot begins to unfold things really get exciting. Yes, the bank heist is one of the most amazing action scenes I've ever seen. The camera work in the scene - and in many of the other action scenes - is fucking amazing. It's the best camera work on gunfights that I've ever seen, and it's quite obvious where videogames like Splinter Cell/RE4/Gears of War really got their inspiration. The last few scenes with Pacino/De Niro facing off are awesome.
Overall I must say this is a good movie. Not the classic I expected (Pacino+De Niro? Come on that has to work), but it was still good.
8.5/10

Man, PD, I keep finding myself agreeing with you on almost everything.

FUCK YEAH
I'm gonna rent Die Hard 2 next

Well, the gunfight/heist is pretty much the centerpiece of the movie. Then it has a really good closing sequence with Pacino getting blasted by his daughter's problems then his confrontation with De niro.
When I saw it in the movie theatres, I pretty much felt the same way. Seemed a little too long in the beginning and a little too preachy at the end.
-
Portman sucked in the movie. At first I thought she was just an ugly duckling as a child but then I realized she wasn't bad looking at all in Leon.

No, you had better rent North By Northwest next if you know what's good for you. :cop
Shit, I'd really better not build it up so much.
But seriously, if you don't rent NXNW, I'm going to fucking kill you.
-
The only good acting bit in the movie was the bit where Pacino took his TV from the dude.
"You can do all these things, but what you CAN'T DO.... IS WATCH MY FUCKING TV!"
^
Something like that.

The Postman really is a great film
-
I'm going to get:
-North by Northwest
-Kingdom of Heaven DC (if they have that version)
-Brazil
-
:'(
Even though all three of those films are almost without a doubt (even though I have seen none of them) better than Die Hard 2.
-
Kingdom of Heaven DC is the shit. I got it on sale for 20 bux when its usually 30
-
I haven't seen KOC:DC, but I'm one of the few individuals who thought the theatrical cut was good. I thought it was pretty awesome, in fact. I just thought that it needed to be longer - it felt like a lot was missing.
-
Well I loved 12 Monkeys, and since Brazil is by the same director I might as well give it a chance.
I'll get them on Jan. 2nd since the 1st is all about football. ROSE BOWL BABY MICHIGAN FTW
-
Where are you getting Brazil from?
-
I got to watch a bit of Brazil the other day (it was on HDNet movies). I only got to see the first 45 minutes or so - it was fucking ridiculous. Gilliam is out of his fucking mind. I really want to watch the rest now though.
-
Brazil is a Criterion release. So, wherever you buy your Criterions.
I have been using www.criteriondvd.com for quite some time now.
-
Dude, it's at Hollywood Video >:(

I think Solo assumed he was going to buy it and a lot of stores don't care criterions.
-
Heat, like most Michael Mann movies, doesn't really grab you until the second or third viewing. I only thought it was an average crime film a couple years ago, and now its one of my all-time favorites. ;)

Got two more movies tonight: Brazil and Kingdom of Heaven. They didn't have the DC but I doubt it'll matter too much, or at least as much as people say. A bad movie is a bad movie, so unless this has like tons of gaping holes footage wise I doubt it'll suck as bad as people say. Epic battles+Jeremy Irons+Orlando Bloom :-*+awesome looking metal masks=it must be kickass

Dude, Brazil is a fuckin' TRIP.
