OpenOffice is garbage, or at least it was a few years ago last time I tried it out. MS Office is kind of like Windows these days where it's so easy to obtain a cheap copy through school or work that the MSRP isn't really much of an issue.

Also as far as OpenOffice goes I read a while back that most of the developers quit and started a new fork called LibreOffice. I don't know if much ever came out of that but it sounded at the time like that's where most of any new development would be.
I thought they pulled the pull the plug on the project, or something. I remember reading some unfavorable news about it.
