The worst thing is, Basshunter is some kind of C-list celeb in the UK now.
-

Storm Spirit isn't a panda any more. Valve :piss :piss :piss

Ive never played Dota, can you explain to me what it is? ( I have played WC3).
-
DotA is an RPG/RTS hybrid where everybody starts out at level 1 and kills NPC characters and other players to get more powerful with the final goal being to destroy the opposing team's main structure. There are >100 characters to choose from, games typically last between 30 and 60 minutes, and it has the most vile community on the face of the earth (primarily because the games mechanics harshly punish death and poor decision making).
There are three major players in the DotA market. DotA/Dota 2, Heroes of Newerth (practically a 1:1 ripoff with more community features) and League of Legends (a F2P game which removed alot of the more obtuse mechanics from DotA and added a persistent leveling system with WoW-like talent trees and rune pages that give permanent stat boosts)
-
So do you have more then 1 unit?
Is there base building?
How does it compare to lets say, SC?
How can a game like LOL be an e-sport if it has persistant world/leveling?
It looks very intruiging so I want to know more :) Thanks for being a fountain of knowledge.
-
-99% of the time, you control one unit but there are a few heroes that have microable pets.
-No base building
-In what ways? The most apparent difference is that SC is more dependent on individual ability, whereas DotA is based on teamwork.
-LoL is an esport because the devs have bought their way into the scene by hosting a $100,000 tourney. Its business model makes it a joke of a competitive game IMO.
-
So basicly you can't play this solo? :(
-
You can play versus the AI, but there is no single player campaign or anything like that.
-
I mean if you play online, is there any point in playing 1-1?
-
It is possible to 1v1, but the game isn't designed for it. I am sure modders will create 1v1 maps with the SDK, though.
-
Digging the art style. Very clean looking.
-
Hnnnggggg, I can't wait for this. I've been playing the hell out of Heroes of Newerth for the past year or so.

-
I so want to play this.
Is it easy just to log on and hop on a map and have a good time with randoms?
-
Will you play Dota 2 with me Borys?
-
I'll play with you.

Beta sign up is a go.
-
Ok I'm signing up, will buy new laptop asap :-[
-
I remember hearing about the DOTA gamestyle back when I played Warcraft III but was too scared to really play online much. It sounded cool as hell, but everything about it that's come since scares the shit outta me.
Kinda want to try DOTA2, just to see if it's something I can even understand or what.
-
Well from what I read it looks really straight forward.
-
Word is Valve spent alot of time and effort trying to make the game look spectator friendly. Hopefully the shoutcasters will do a good job introducing newbies into the game.
-
How complex can it be with one unit archie?
-
There is alot of game knowledge that is required to be competent, especially with 104 heroes and dozens of items.
Also, apparently 2.8 million people watched the first game...
...and I missed it. :'(
-
Well you can learn no? :-*
Archie what do you think of these specs?
Asus 15.6"

It's a Source game. Any computer made in the past 4 years will max it out.
-
Mine won't.
(3 year old acer with x2 turion, ati 3650, it plays HL2 smooth though 8), but L4D not so smooth :()
And I mean it's not only for this, but also GW2 and other upcoming games like D2.
Just dunno if I should invest the 300 euro more.
Anyhoo the 17" seems sold out atm.

Game looks amazing. :bow2

The worst thing is, Basshunter is some kind of C-list celeb in the UK now.
The only reason I know about this game is because of Basshunter :-\
-
Europeans are playing right now. No more Chinese ricefests for the time being. :piss2
Also 1.5 million concurrent viewers are watching right now. Insane.
-
DOTA ignoramus here: So I gather you don't need to destroy all the smaller nodes before you can take on the main node? What is the smaller nodes' function--are they teleports/spawn points? Or do they generate gold or extra NPC waves?
-
The towers have to be destroyed in order in the corresponding lane (i.e. you can't kill the middle tower if the front most one is still alive), characters can teleport to the towers using an item and enemies can destroy the tower for a gold boost, but you are able to destroy your own tower when it is below 150 HP to prevent the opponent from getting such a large boost. A single character can get up to 500 gold for a tower kill, but if it is denied, then he will only gain 100 gold.
-
At the very end, the final tower in a lane also has a ranged and melee barracks. When these are destroyed, the other team receives upgraded ranged or melee creeps for that lane. These guys are powerful and can push all the way to your team's main base if you're not careful.
EDIT: Grammarsss.
-
Very cool, thanks. The towers reminded me of the power nodes in ut2k4 so that was my closest reference point.
Looks like it requires a lot of teamwork and coordination (tho that might just be down to the pro tourney skill level I'm seeing here). I wonder if it's really viable playing with randoms.
-
I watched some of it, but it was too jumbled for me as a spectator. I played some DOTA during WCIII but not enough to understand it fully. I'm a huge SCII fan though, and love it's pro scene so anything that expands esports is cool with me. I'll have to read up more on the game though.
Given how long games are, does it work well as a spectator sport? LOL will be featured at the upcoming MLG so it'll be interesting to watch, and see the crowds.
-
Pubs are a crapshoot. Best thing to do is join a clan and try to make friends there.
-
I invite any of you to download Heroes of Newerth now that it's free to play. I'll coach you through what characters do what and how to play. I was big into the original DotA, League of Legends for a bit, and now I've been playing Heroes of Newerth for the past year or so until DotA 2 releases.
Message me on Skype (TylertheHood) or AIM (TylertheHood) or Steam (FatalT) if you want to!

Ironic because Dota 2 has the highest visual clarity of any of the games in its genre. LoL is generally clear, but can get kinda busy during team fights and HoN is a massive visual clusterfuck.

And he will get to play it for 800 more before I can. :piss2 :piss2 :piss2

First Chinese team sent packing.
:bow MINESKY :bow2
-
I'll play the fuck out of this alongside Diablo III.
-
I'd never watched a DotA game before this but I've been pretty fascinated by watching these tourney games. Commentary really adds some excitement. Valve's doing something right here, as I now feel like I have an idea of how to play the game before the beta's even started.
-
Fuck EHOME :piss2 :piss2 :piss2
-
The grand finals are tomorrow. There are three teams left: Na'Vi from Ukraine sits in the winner's bracket undefeated while Scythe from Singapore and EHOME from China will play first thing in the morning to decide who will be in the grand finals.
There have been two showstopper games this tournament that I would suggest anyone interested watch: MUFC vs OK.Nirvana.Int (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SOfhXi8pCk&feature=player_embedded) and M5 vs EHOME (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixoc-7RVM-g&feature=player_embedded)

No one wants to take me up on my offer of DotA/HoN training? Awwww. :'(
-
An hour long game? How does that work as a spectator esport? Obviously some SC2 games last that long, but from what I've heard most dota games last very long
-
I want Na'Vi to win. I always liked Puppey as a strategist and Dendi as a deliberate player.
-
No one wants to take me up on my offer of DotA/HoN training? Awwww. :'(
I'd try it out if I had some time :-\
-
Rooting for Na'vi. ArtStyle is so fucking good.
