Title: Wii redesign this year
Post by: cool breeze on August 17, 2011, 04:57:42 AM
Not much is known other than it's this year and it's no longer compatible with Gamecube stuff (games or controllers)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-17-new-wii-loses-back-compatibility

also, Zelda Skyward Sword is confirmed for November 18th in Europe.  Probably the 13th or 20th in America.

apparently, this is it:

It looks exactly like the old Wii to me.  But I haven't looked at the Wii in a while.

Can't you see they turned all the icons and text 90 degrees?!?!?

Gamecube games are gonna skyrocket in value, and old Wiis are the new hotness. Time to stock up on Wiis before market explodes.

Anybody who expects ANY kind of BC from PS4/ Xbox 720 is, like XFE said, huffing some serious glue.

I expect them to remove the use of discs but have all the games they sell on their marketplaces be compatible...

I can still see MS supporting 360 games since AMD/ATI is rumored to be on board for their next console.

I just got my Wii out of the drawer to check - so reoriented lettering = new-look Wii?  Good lord.

This seems like a tactic to get the wii down to 99 dollars for the holidays.  Combine this with their return to budget pricing on certain Wii games done recently, and it seems they're trying to get everything into impulse buy territory.

The only way I would get one is if there was a significantly bigger flash drive.  Other than that this seems pointless as far as redeeming new features.

Price is not the Wii problem, meh

yeah, ps4 is kind of a toss-up re: bc, but i'd imagine 720 will have decent bc (maybe not full bc)

This is a great idea!  And they can sell such new titles as Zelda, and...uh...er...um...re-issued Mario Kart and Galaxy?

is there any logic behind them removing retrocompatibility from this? i mean if they made more GC->WII port like the pikmin 2 i could see the reason... it would be a scumbag reason but it would be a reason...

i imagine a situation where all the Nintendo execs were sitting around a table with a Wii in the middle trying to figure out what to do about a redesign. Reggi gets up and his legs hit the table causing the Wii to tumble and fall on it's side.

the entire room suddenly gasps

I always wondered why you couldn't eject with the remote. (Can you?) Then I just put everything on an external drive and forgot about it.

Way to confuse consumers (ie parents) even more, Nintendo

Some posters on GAF have assured me that nobody will think the Wii U is just the controller.

I wouldn't tip them over like that if you have a launch unit since they have the bad GPU.

Better just buy the redesigned model.

Skyward Sword november 20th or so? looks like I'm going to hold out on that until Christmas. Saints Row the Third takes priority.

:bow

And I love Zelda.

yeah, Skyward Sword is confirmed to be on the 20th.  It was either that or the 13th cuz Nintendo releases games on Sunday.

I'll buy SR3 for PC if there is a decent launch day deal, otherwise it gets the bump along with Halo Anniversary and AssCreedeR.  Rayman Origins I might just hold out for the Vita version because that OLED is probably better than my aging TV.

the Wii redesign picture is funny, though.  is the plastic stand included? if not, that would explain the horizontal preference now.  gotta save money.

Yeah they ditched the stand. It might not even fit in one due to the new form. At least based on the five minutes I spent in the GAF thread.

This is shameful, as "redesigns" go. No BC? I still miss GBA compatibility on my DSi and DS Lite.

how the fuck does removing GC compatibility makes them cheaper to produce? because they don't have to put 4 holes for the controller and 2 for the memory sticks? ???

My entire point was that a potential 99$ wii with a selection of well regarded budget titles could give it SOME type of boost.  So yes, reissue stuff like Excite Truck/Bots, Endless Ocean, Animal Crossing, Warioware, Punch-Out- stuff like that.

I like how they're positioning at families, you know the segment of the market Wii hasn't conquered.

Think of all their disposable income to spend on software

Its a littllleeee too late for anything else, really.  I'm starting to think the Nintendo brand is poison to the 18-34 male demographic anyways.  Maybe they should pull a Miramax like Disney.

DS lite can play GBA games

And magoose you tard, they're taking out gc compat to make the thing cheaper to produce so that they don't have to eat the costs of the price drop.  A shitty reason, bit as you say, a reason.

oh, hei. how about that? what the hell was I thinking?
Title: Re: Wii redesign this year
Post by: magus on August 18, 2011, 12:07:11 PM
Those aren't just holes, dude.  They are custom parts which need to be produced just for inclusion in the Wii.  Yanking them probably saves Nintendo $10-20 per unit in manufacturing costs.

Y'all need to start actually buying things, magoose.  You seem to be losing your grip on the very concept of how money works.

couldn't they just make a gamecube controller that works like the classic controller? it still seems to me like a very stupid move

There's a good chance they may go with a disc drive that doesn't read cube discs.  Also, cube games can only save to memory cards.
