Title: Party Quest - it's out - I made it, you play it

yo Bore,

so I'm studying Interactive Design atm, and I'm making a game in flash. I've almost wrapped up the pre-planning, and am at a loss for a title.

The game is a retro adventure type game with pixel art. It will be 100% keyboard controlled, and you will need to walk around a house collecting shit, solving puzzles and talking to people etc.

The story is youre a sports fan (rugby) from a small town, who has paid a visit to capital city for the big game. Next thing you know you wake up in a backyard of a house. A party is going on, and it's a real hipster party. You must use your wits to survive the coolest party ever, and escape the house.

Any ideas? Current working title is "Party Central".

I think one of the game mechanics should be Kiwi Jack trying to score Conversions on the hipsters to get them to come to the game.

I really hope my game is decent.

I know I can code it, I just gotta make the art sweet and have lots of good writing. the music is gauranteed fantastic. My friend andrew is making me 8-bit stuff

coding progress coming along real good.

Framework is DONE. Now I just have create some graphics and shit and latch it up.

as much as you can do anything with FruityLoops..
i actually wanted to use FL (because YMCK's Magical 8-bit Plug (http://www.ymck.net/magical8bitplug/index.html) won't quantise properly in Ableton8) for this but it was too frustrating (haven't really used it for 5 years) and i quit.
definitely recommend you check out that plugin if you want to do 8-bit music for your game.

The dialogue boxes need some kind of indicator so you can tell who's talking.

Edit: I got stuck on the two guys asking me about Nietzsche and Marxism, the conversation just keeps repeating and I can't get away from it. Doesn't matter which choice I picked. I answered wrongly the first time and talked to them again, which put me into the conversation cycle.

shit, I changed some of the code around but didnt test that conversation again...

I know exactly what the problem is. Thanks for the heads up guys

Yeah the dialog boxes are a bit iffy. Theres a bunch of design choices I made early on which did not work out too well, when I had already gone too far ahead to be bothered reworking them.

This is my first game ever, and I learned A LOT in the process. The sequel will be much tighter!

I am gonna try to say this without sounding like an asshole

shipping your game is the only reason to make it, don't worry about bugs (you can patch them), focus instead on how awesome it is that your game is in front of an audience, gathering feedback, people playing it and enjoying it. THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT and a lot of people dev-hell for years without ever reaching this point, so congrats!!1

fixed the bugs and the preloader and stuff, but school servers wont let me upload :/

will have version 1.01 up in a couple of hours (with no infinite conversation loops!  ;))

Beat it.

Great music.  Cool looking house and appropriate dialogue.  Puzzles made sense.  Best cameo ever.

I got a bug where I can't really get rid of the "You can't use this here" message:

It went away when I left the room but it's still there whenever I open the inventory screen.

Other than that the game is pretty good!

NICE!!! Just played it in bed with lo, made both of us laugh a lot  :D Everything went smooth for me, nothing game breaking, only hiccup I noticed was Heston continuing his walking animation during a conversation if you were holding a direction when you pressed space. Can't wait for Party Quest 2. Hope it's set in a mansion!

I think the bug Pringo described appears when you try to get out of the inventory screen while the "you can't use this here" message is still on the screen.

Fun game, seems better then those adventure games that came with that last Indieroyale bundle.

Awesome game, only problem I really hit was that if you close the Inventory screen while the "you can't use this item here" box is still there, the box will remain next time you go to the inventory screen. Probably the easiest way to fix this is to just check if that box is open, when the player hits the I key while on the inventory screen.

Anyways:
-Graphics look great, nice use of color
-Cinemas are awesome
-Music is very catchy
-Great sense of humor, I love the random elements thrown in and all the poking fun at hipsters

I checked it out, but might have hit a slight bug.

I went through the game, and she-devil shot me down for her boyfriend.  I got the iPod and took it to the party, and it went to a "Video Sequence", (which scrolled down super slow btw) and it got stuck there.  I could still move around the room, though I couldn't see what was going on.  I exited the room to the left, and every time I opened my inventory screen it was the video sequence, though I could still use the arrow keys to find items and it would give me the "Can't use that here" message.  Figured I'd look for a way to get in touch with ya and ask about it.

All in all, fucking awesome dude!  Leagues better than I could ever hope to do, and way exceeded my expectations going in!  A++, would play again.

OK, I beat it, one last (slight) bug... the final text (after seeing the cinema of "TV On The Radio") appears and disappears way too fast... Amazing experience though and I can't wait to see what else you have in store... btw how did you go about doing the art? Do you have a Wacom tablet? It looks really great and totally fits the game.

sweet, I fixed the ending cutscene bug, but that inventory bug is proving a PITA to fix! Will keep plugging away

In regards to the art, I made it in a program called Pixen, which is geared towards pixel art. To get big retro pixels, I drew characters at 30x60, then scaled the sprites to 60x120 in flash, making the pixels 4x bigger. No wacom tablet, just a cheap mouse!

I finally played it!

Cons:
- Short
- Man bag controls are awkward, why not have each item be selectable instead of fiddling with a mouse cursor? Or make them clickable with an actual mouse.

Pros:
- Liked the pixel art on the people, and the music
- Very great humor

Sequel will be GOTY 2012. :rock
