Title: Is Resistance 3 a piece of poo

Cause I have it sitting here and I guess I should play it since apparently no one else on this board is playing it.

Resistance 2 was basically the worst fps I've ever played.  Terrible level design, terrible story, awful gunplay.  Took everything good about the first game and threw it out.


Chances that this is better?  Chances that this is actually a good game? 


Will find out this weekend!

Nah, I never play demos if I going to buy the game anyhow.  Still haven't played the FF Type-0 demo and I already put down my $100 pre-order.

Twas' Adam Blade in the NPD thread.

I watched that Quick Look the other day, the one guy is completely into the lore like mad, everyone else just loves the lighting. And that's...it? Multiple weapons are back, supposed to be like the first one more, is "the game they always wanted to make", three year dev cycle, etc. Might have some cool boss fights.

Devil May Cry 2 sucked, still bought 3 and that was a good decision.

If I like a series, I'll give them 1 awful game in hopes it was just a fluke.  2 awful games in a row and I bail.  I really liked Resistance 1 and Retribution.  I like the setting, the crazy weapons and Insomniac can be a good dev when they get it right (R&C Crack in Time).  So it's worth a shot.

Even R1 wasn't that great.  It was just good by launch games standards.  That's just based on SP though.  I never play MP shooters on consoles. 

Still, I think R3 is worth a try if only to see what guns Insomniac came up with.  That's one thing they always get right.

R1 was just Half-life 2 mixed with COD.  How's that not generic?  Keep in mind this is coming from a huge Sony fan (as proven by Oscar).

I don't see that as a bad thing.

It was a good standard FPS with an interesting setting (alien attack period piece Europe in the cold snowy winter) with unique weapons (weapon wheel ftw) and best of all it was actually challenging and required you to die a lot and play well; so it was intense and you were on the edge the whole time.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Retribution had a lot of the same good points too.  R2 was lol.

I only played the demo of the first Resistance and hated it... also disliked the Killzone 2 demo. Shit, I had more fun with even COD4 than those demos.

I thought the first Resistance was a great game. The sequel crapped all over everything that made it great.

If I play R3, it will be through a Red Box rental.

I always thought the Resistance series was a fairly average series. I think sony people championed it early because they were so eager to have their own halo level franchise.

I think its a decent series but its nothing to overly wet your pants over. But then I'm not the biggest fan of Insomniac. I never really got the appeal of those Ratchet and Clank games way back

I never really got big into the Ratchet and Clank series but I had fun with the demos of some of the games... very nice art style and excellent controls. Level design from what I remember was nothing to write home about, and I'm sure the game series gimmicks have gotten stale over the 7 or so releases the series had since its start.

Yeah, a lot of Sony franchises this gen have gotten so hyped by the Sfags (LBP, Resistance, Killzone), only one that I felt lived up (somewhat) to their hype was Uncharted 2...

Since I'm considered an xbot I wanted to say that there are sony franchises I really like. Uncharted, Metal Gear, Wipeout, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus etc. But Sony fans are the worst when they try to pretend every franchise on that platform is a groundbreaking, amazing piece of work. Resistance is a decent to good franchise. It's not an amazing franchise like some Sony fans will spin it.

Same goes for Killzone.

I've always thought God of War was over-rated but then I'm not much of a fan of that sort of game so my opinion is meaningless on that series. I think its a pretty series and it has a good gimmick but its nothing that really interests me.

MGS is still the only stealth series where I actually think the stealth is fun unlike say Splinter Cell.

What a bunch of crap. Although I personally liked the term "COD with aliens" since that's probably a pretty kick ass formula, it didn't feel a lot like either COD or HL2. Closer to something like Quake, but with a style of its own. Resistance was neat. Flawed, not great, but neat. And the MP kicked all sorts of ass. Very atypical of a console game, too. Felt more like UT than Halo, that's for sure.

Funny that a game that gets regularly ripped on as being generic stands out as sort of unique, and certainly in terms of feature set (judging by console shooter standards at least).

As for Resistance 2... felt like they decided to listen to the critics and made a game for those critics. Not that I finished it, I felt that I'd rather just play Halo or something. Now there's a game you could call "this mixed with that."

Resistance doesn't even remotely play like Quake.  Quake is all about quick reflexes.  You'll be dead in a few seconds in Resistance if you try to run and gun.

Still, a lot more Quake than COD, let alone HL2. The COD stuff I could see people saying, because of the era (which COD was in at the time), but the HL2 references never made a whole lot of sense. Because of the aliens? Yeah, new idea in shooters right there.

As for quick reflexes, did you ever play Resistance online? Fastest console shooter I've played, other than UT3.

Nope, I conceded that Resistance is probably lots of fun online.  I suck too much at gamepad controls to be just competant . 

Resistance reminds me of HL2 because of the aliens taking over, greyish tone of certain levels and overall bleak atmosphere.

Chimera is a lot more Strogg than combine, though. Honestly, I wouldn't give Insomniac the credit of crafting anywhere near as interesting of an enemy as the combine. The one genuinely cool thing that Resistance had going for it was the uncertainty of the nature of the chimera, and the cloven (mentioned a lot in the intel). Which of course they pretty much ditched for the sequel.

By the way, I liked the look of Resistance. It was clean, there was detail where needed but light on unnecessary distractions. The second one came along, painted everything yellow and critics went oooh aaah at the jell-o water ripples and dem shaders, man. Same issue that UT3 had.

I don't care much for the combine or the Chimera.  Both are kinda dumb and just cheat with superior accuracy.  I far prefer fighting the huge enemies in both games, like the big spiders.

The combine interests me as a concept more than an actual in-game enemy. Actually, that's sort of true of HL2 as a whole. The world was so mesmerizing in its fucked-upedness that the style of the game sometimes felt a bit dumb.
