TGS officially starts on the 15th.

But today is Ninty's conference.

Also, tomorrow there will be a Sony conference (ie: a day before TGS).

And on the 15th Sony will deliver its keynote.

You're right, Japan is dead.

The last Japanese games I finished were Dead Rising in 2006 and RE4 Wii in 2007 (?).

Wow, that was fucking terrible.  The only thing that got me pleasantly curious is what the firmware update will entail.

I mean, good jon on Monster Hunter 4 (not that I give a shit), but I'm starting to worry Nintendo is killing off their mid tier franchises like Warioware and Advance Wars.  It made sense for marketplace failures like Fzero, but now its like all of their games in production are Mii/Mario/Pokemon stuff.  I didn't even feel this was the case with the Wii, as I got stuff like the excite games, punchout, endless ocean etc.

Animal Crossing will be mine though, and I'm warming up to kid icarus.

even if it is on Vita and nintendo didn't bury Capcom with bags and bags of yen, the 3DS is still in a better position because 3G will undoubtedly bring people to that platform.  They'll just stay for MH4.

MH4 wasn't a big surprise because Capcom roughly did the same with MH3 on the Wii.

that's what i'm saying

if you don't play monster hunter or whatever, i don't understand why it would make you excited to see it, i'd be thinking "yeahyeah okay, where's my fucking metroid"

i'm excited about the vita because i like uncharted and i like resistance, but if they announced some huge third party franchise i wasn't interested in i wouldn't give a fuck if it sold ten million vitas because i was never gonna play it anyway

i guess it is a big deal if all you care about is saleswars

I'm legitimately excited for MH4.  Don't care about MH3G, but MH4 has what I wanted from the series.

I think Dragon's Dogma on 360 looks cool too.  Both it and MH4 are like that old SOTC/Nico video where a team took down a colossus together by climbing it and shit.

Sony conf starts in about 10 hours,i think.

No MH4 Vita...bad for Sony

linkzg: that's totally understandable, you are a fan/player of the games

i am talking about all the fistpumpers who are never gonna play these games acting like it's some sort of personal victory

i guess if you owned nintendo stock or something

if the only things coming to vita were final fantasy and kingdom hearts and (insert jrpg franchise) i'd just think "well, saved myself $250"

i guess i am trying to fathom getting excited over something you never intend to play, and that's probably a fruitless exercise

Same here. The series can finally graduate some of its rusty designs. What I saw was a huge step forward. I honestly never thought Capcom would bother with, since they seem to be able to sell millions just by merely adding monsters, quests and weapons.

I have no interest in the series but it would be pretty funny if they showed a non-scripted MH4 for Vita that makes 3DS MH4 look like an N64 game. Honestly, watching balloons deflate can be enjoyable.

It could turn into another Sengoku Basara 3 situation... "oooooh! Wii exclusive OMGOMGOMOGMG...... wait, PS3 version? Oh... we don't care anymore."

Also requires a single AAA battery and releasing December 10th along with Monster Hunter 3G

Yeah, business-wise, for Japan, that conference was *exactly* what it needed to be.  MH4 is an obvious money hat, but honestly, Nintendo needs to start throwing money hats around and for a Japanese handheld, that was probably the best thing they could've bought for themselves.

I'm not a big MH guy, but I do give them a try as they come out, hoping one of these days it'll catch.  Still, I saw a few things at that conference that looked interesting (little of it new though).  As a 3DS owner, the conference was good because it shows that Nintendo aren't just giving up on the damned thing.

Of course, it's not hard to see what Capcom is up to.  MH4 will be 3DS exclusive (and that's absolutely great news for Nintendo), but MHP4th?  Well, that's a whole different game, y'see.  Wonder if they can convince Sony to moneyhat them for that?

Do you see them going for that route instead of a multiplatform releases of MH on portables? I'm still trying to figure out whether MH4 is exclusive or not, but knowing Nintendo, and how they handled Tri, it probably is. This scenario would seriously hurt Vita in Japan right out of the gate, that even a late MH4 port or 4th announcement won't allow it to bounce back as fast as it should.

Animal Crossing will be mine though, and I'm warming up to kid icarus.

yeah and those games sold like ass. Makes sense from Nintendo's perspective to give them the heave ho

Thanks to MH4 announcement dizzying Kagari, she's getting all leaky and saying that a FF RPG is being developed for Vita, but she's not sure if it'll be announced tomorrow or not.

I think if Capcom can run two separate MH series, each one selling millions of units with each installment, AND collect exclusivity moneyhats, they absolutely will do that.

Sounds like Capcom. The only victim is going to be Sony if their moneyhats are big enough to control release schedules.

Real talk: Not a single FF-related Vita announcement would get me excited. Maybe the small sales-whore inside of me will, but nothing more. Same goes for the MGS and RE series. I just stopped giving a fuck mostly. On the other hand, MH is a new found interest, and in my book no Sony announcement will top it.

Maybe a Tactics Ogre 2 will mend my broken heart, maybe.

Yeah, it doesn't look good from a technical standpoint, but a lot of the ideas they showcased (platforming, fighting while climbing, mounting enemies, etc) is fairly new to a franchise that was in desperate need of some new, action-oriented mechanics. So it finally feels like they're releasing a real sequel.

the announcement itself is key, yes.

But yeah, it was interesting to see sporks, Johntv etc all lose their shit when it was so clearly a single player scripted action sequence which is about as far removed from the organic gameplay experience of Monster Hunter as it could possibly be.

And err, clearly a '4' was inevitable at some point. Having it be announced for the shittiest platform imaginable (bar perhaps the Wii) is a win in what way?

I'm fairly certain it was in engine assets stuff spliced with cg snippets intended to imply some new mechanics.  I doubt its indicative of more than environmental destruction and a new climbing mechanic.  I remember Tri had similar marketing/media regarding its ecosystem features.

surely i don't have to paint the full picture as to why this is a win for certain people?

i'll play it regardless if it ends up on 3DS only and not bleat like a baby but yeah - i don't get the flag waving at this point given the PSV seems to be infinitely more suited to a MH game. That said - i will be extremely surprised if we do not see MH support in at least two forms for Sony.

One of the biggest surprises out of Nintendo's media event in Japan was the announcement that Monster Hunter 4 would be released on the 3DS. Understand that, for Japan, this is somewhere near the magnitude of when Final Fantasy XIII was announced for the Xbox 360 -- a major coup. But why would Capcom shift a PlayStation Portable-exclusive series to the 3DS, especially with a game that sold millions on Sony portables? Money.

Katsuhiko Ichii, Capcom's managing corporate officer, explained the decision to Thompson Financial News (via Gamasutra). "Due to high development cost of titles for Vita, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 4 title," Ichii said. While it remains unclear whether Monster Hunter 4 is now a 3DS exclusive, or simply being released on both 3DS and Vita, this quote seems to suggest the former. Either way, the fact remains: the most popular new portable in Japan just got that much more powerful.

Was 4WoL worth picking up? I never bothered with it, but people elsewhere were jizzing over the rumor, before it was formally announced.

it tries really hard to play like classic final fantasy, the music is all retro, there is a job system a-la FF3,the plot includes highlight like "rescue the princess from the evil dragon" and also it looks really pretty

most people seems annoyed by the fact that each character can only carry 15 items (this include equipment and also spells as you need a book to cast the relative spell) and also by the fact that for the first bit of the game character leaves and enter your party quite often (which make the 15 items only even more annoying) but personaly the real problem i have with the game is that it just doesn't do a good job at being classics

i put the blame on the combat system, you see there are no MP and instead each character gets 2 action point each turn and each action they do consume a certain number of AP,this ultimately translate into spamming all the special skills you want and in fact after getting a certain job,you barely have no reason to not just murder everything in your path

the way you develop the jobs is also very annoying, each job needs a certain number of gems but there are quite a lot of different kind of gems and it's not uncommon to end having something like... 20 rubies and not a single emerald or shit like that

the boss are totaly unbalanced, there are a lot of gear to protect you from elemental attack but the way it's done,it's ridiculous,a character with the right equipment will receive a great total of 1 damage from every boss attack while the remaining party member will die as soon as the boss fart,it's really really really stupid and this might be the first game where sometimes going solo is EASIER than using your full team

i guess if you really really really like classic final fantasy you might want to bite,it's bound to be better than that stupid FF4 half-assed sequel at least

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is usually the one conducting interviews for Nintendo, and has become well known for his positive perspective and easy-going personality as the host of Nintendo.com's on-going Iwata Asks column.

Whenever the tables are turned on him, though, it seems his anger can ignite in a flash.

"Absolutely not" was the President's response when Japanese newspaper Nikkei asked him the question that investors have been hammering on for months now – will Nintendo shift development resources to mobile gaming and start developing for smartphones?

"This is absolutely not under consideration," replied Iwata. "If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength. It's the duty of management to make use of those strengths. It's probably the correct decision in the sense that the moment we started to release games on smartphones we'd make profits. However, I believe my responsibility is not to short term profits, but to Nintendo's mid and long term competitive strength."

i don't think it would hurt them to release a few of the nes games that everyone's already bought 5 times over

he's not wrong.

they're not having their best times of late but generally speaking Nintendo make more money than any other video game company, and they've been doing that for 25 years now, and a big part of that is their hardware business.

see, when you sell hardware at a profit rather than a loss, you *make* money from it instead of praying you recoup your losses from software license fees.  it's in nintendo's long-term interest to maintain a hardware division, and it's in the long-term interest of their hardware that they keep their games fully exclusive to their hardware.

the big mistake being made there right now is not partnering with a phone manufacturer to make a nintendo-brand smart phone, with its own OS and whatnot.

The last point you make is why I see that as a wtf. Keeping their head in the sand and ignoring the new market out there because "this is what we do, and if we didn't do it we wouldn't be Nintendo" isn't in the best long term interest of the company because their section of the market is shrinking and facing tougher competition.

haven't played Tri on the Wii outside of the demo, but it looks a lot nicer than the PSP games.

it beats sitting around, hoping that smartphones will go away, oblivion.

Or having devices that don't cater to the segment of the market with the most disposable income
