The thread title is deceptive. That video doesn't say Olive Garden is a D+ restaurant; that, of course, would be ridiculous. It says their healthy options are limited...which is fine with me. Not everything has to clean my colon. Sometimes I want a Big Mac, regardless of the consequences. And sometimes I want a nice Italian meal, priced within my budget. Served in an environment where I can chill out and feel at home.

I know the "herp a derp you can't have a good meal unless it's $20 and covers 3 centimeters of the plate herp a derp" brigade will be here soon. Laugh it up cigarillos, I've got free breadsticks

Some years ago, I went to Olive Garden with a group of friends  There were 8-10 of us total.  The waitress came by and took everyone's order without writing anything down, then brought the free salad and breadsticks.  I never got anything that I ordered, and the waitress disappeared for a while.  When she finally came back, I told her that I never got anything, and her mouth fell open.  "I'm sooooooooooo sorry!!  I forgot to put your order in!  What did you want?" she said.  But we had to go to a movie, so I told her to forget about it and that I ate the salad and breadsticks instead.  Everybody gave her low/no tips and we left.

Only been back there once since then, since my wife wanted to go there.

Aren't there any good mom-and-pop Italian restaurants by you guys or am I just spoiled living in the tri-state area?

This is what I do if I want some Italian food or any other food, really.  Chain restaurants don't compare.

Fuck you guys with good mom and pop places around you.  Houston has great food if you want to travel inside the city.  But anywhere outside the 610 loop is 90% chains and fast food.  Bleh.

Well the thing that makes Houston shittier is that outside of like one square mile, it's one big fucking suburb.  I technically live in the city but it's just an aging suburb.  Houston proper is about a 50 mile diameter of sprawl (sans the 1 or 2 square miles of downtown area).

Omaha is the same way. After vising there for the last 8 years, I'm still not used to "nice places" being in strip malls.

I live in an urban village in Seattle. It's really nice parking my car on Friday and walking everywhere all weekend.

Houston at least creates fake urban areas for nice restaurants.  Most of the really good restaurants are in one of 3 areas in Houston...

Downtown (real downtown Houston)
Town Centre (a fake urban living area South of Houston in one of Houston's richest suburbs)
City Centre (Same as above except it's to the West of Houston near the fastest growing suburb)

a one bedroom 700 sq ft apartment is around 1700 dollars in town centre or city centre.  Tons of lamborghinis and shit around there too.  But it's so fake that I couldn't fathom living there.  They're both right off the highway and consist of pretentious cobbled roads and shit.  Bleh.  Nice to visit though.

There's some places like that in Dallas. One is well north of downtown and features all the cobblestone roads and blocky buildings you'd expect from a real city center, but it's abutted on one side by a major tollroad and one the other by huge corporate campuses.

We get those manufactured retail/residential communities outside in the suburbs. The urban village I live in became part of Seattle back in the late 1800s. Very different and full of urban density alongside single family homes that have been there forever.

speaking of shitty chains, i decided to go and use my $5 macaroni grill gift card today for lunch.  "hmmm mushroom ravioli; i bet it's kind of nasty but serviceable.  i'll get that!"  well guess what it costs FOURTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS.  and yes it tastes pretty shitty and isn't that big of a portion either.  i used to think i was spending a little more at good restaurants but it was worth it for the quality & originality.  now i know better - i'm actually spending less on something that tastes WAY better when i don't eat at a chain.  FUCK suburban dining, fuck it to hell.

It's my favorite dish, although I've only made it a couple times. Kraft is blasphemy in my family, Cheebs. We have mac n cheese in every holiday dinner. When I was younger, my mom would let me pick what I wanted for my birthday dinner. I'd always pick mac n cheese, pork chops, greens, and black eyed peas  :zelda

I haven't been to the macaroni grill in a long time before their portions kept getting smaller and smaller.  The only reason I used to go was that I got obnoxiously huge portions of barely average food for about bucks.  But last time I went everything was at least like 12 dollars and portions were much smaller.  Fuck that.

Omaha is the same way. After vising there for the last 8 years, I'm still not used to "nice places" being in strip malls.

This is pretty much Long Island in a nutshell... oh, that place that just has a simple red sign saying "SUSHI" on it, in a generic stripmall with a GameStop, a Dress Barn and a Michael's? Yeah, that place has a higher Zagat rating than nearly every sushi restaurant in NYC. Most of my favorite restaurants out here tend to be holes-in-the-wall in stripmalls... though some of our older "downtown" areas (Garden City, Huntington, Port Jefferson) have their share of great eateries too.

Shame that most people here aren't willing to try new places... Carrabbas is jam-packed with people, but the best mom-and-pop Italian restaurants are almost deserted.

I don't think I've ever been to Olive Garden. Is it really that bad? Some of their commercials look pretty good.

It's not really that bad, just generic Italian chain food. I've been to some other places, like Johhny Carino's and Spaghetti Warehouse, and it's all pretty much the same. Buca di Beppo was a little bit better IMO, but I live in Hooterville, USA so it's not like I'm an Italian food connoisseur.

I was talking to someone at work, and I pretty much said that I dont think the 'trash food' of my youth will ever not be a part of me. I fucking LOVE a bowl of hamburger helper, a trip to Dennys, or a log of Summer Sausage. I know its full of bullshit- but goddamnit MEMORIES N SHIT DELICIOUS

:bow

every year around the holidays i buy a huge summer sausage, block of nice cheese, some inglehoffer sweet-hot mustard, and some good vegetable crackers, and snack on that shit for like a month

I think I could get by on Steak Ummm's alone

And I've been to Olive Garden once and had the Chicken Marsala. It wasn't bad at all but I prefer the potato to be oven roasted instead of mashed in a Marsala. Living 45 minutes from Boston provides better choices though, in regards to Italian food (doesn't even have to be around North End).

There's actually a Pizza joint called Espresso Pizza that's so.fucking.good. Dough is hand tossed and the sauce is very sweet. People speculate that they put just a bit of Nestea in their tomato sauce. It sound sacrilegious though and I'm sure people growing up in an Italian household with a Mother or Father who cook would hate it. Sort of like a texmex sort of thing.

At Olive Garden the potatoes with Chicken Marsala aren't mashed, they are eighthed and deep fried.

This is what I had eaten, they call "Stuffed chicken marsala"

They may have had regular Chicken Marsala but only noticed this dish

Yeah, if you want a big salty piece of meat, Outback Steakhouse is your best option for chain.

Do not, not, not entertain the idea of Planet Hollywood in Waikiki. The one on Maui was not bad, but that was a long time ago and may have become horrible. I think Bubba Gump's is supposedly pretty good.

Seriously though, check Yelp or something for places that are great, and nearby you.

There is a great noodle place in Chinatown (downtown Honolulu, away from the strip). There's also Chibo, a Japanese okonomiyaki place that has it's only American location in Honolulu.

Waikiki/The Strip sucks for food. It's all tourist traps and big box chains. Well, Puka Dog on the strip is tasty.

We got a gift card to Macaroni Grill. CAN'T WAIT!!!

You're gonna get someone a gift card for a chain Italian restaurant when she worked at a locally-owned authentic Italian restaurant for 20% of her life? For shame... Luckily there is a Macaroni Grill between my husband's job and my job, so it's free lunch.

Strange enough, I'll go to Applebees and get 3-cheese chicken penne pasta AND ENJOY EVERY SINGLE BITE. No shame.

Chain restaurant lobsters aren't going to be found locally sweetie. They are probably "lobsters" cheaply made in captivity and frozen in some freezer somewhere for 10 years.

PD I hope you take your new girl to downtown Ann Arbor to the nice real (aka non-chain!) restaurants you have locally here.

Spam dishes are served in Okinawan restaurants, and the supermarket across the street from work had them regularly, but I've only had them when visiting Hawaii and occasionally at Casa Chronovore.
